Vacation log part two!

Tuesday I finished the hems, and we played the best damn game of scrabble of our lives to date with a board score of 822.

Wednesday P went out for a last grocery run before Christmas.

Thursday I made two more attempts at butter tarts, the second successful. They need a little bit of blind baking, just not as much as I did the first time. Cornstarch makes for a better texture than roux.

Friday we did a porch swap with F&A to relieve them of some mistaken lamb and chicken wings, and got bonus cinnamon pastries. We opened gifts (Rejected Princesses from P, a nice marble mortar and pestle from D, the best hoodie I’ve ever worn from M; the socks for P were a hit).

Saturday we did a video chat with P’s folks, then with mine, and P made fesenjan (a sour Persian meat stew with nuts). T sent me progress photos from the infinite lizard torus puzzle so that seems to have been a win as well.

Sunday I woke up with mega neck pain, so spent most of the day propped up on pillows, doing gentle exercises on a timer. I made a start at the annual zine.

Monday was better. P helped me make another batch of lentils and grits, this time with a parsnip thrown in, an excellent addition.

I started a workout plan on the 20th called “Couch to Crushing it” and it’s going well so far.

I’ve been reading Kill The Farm Boy by Delilah S Dawson and Kevin Hearne. It’s a bit like Shrek in its frenzied comedic tone but otherwise standard D&D theater. Enjoyable enough to finish but I wouldn’t bother recommending it unless you are hard up for lesbian representation in sword and sorcery.

So cranky

Yesterday I went to the claims data meeting, the Engineering meeting, and the robotics girls meeting. In between I struggled to stay on task, but managed to test the UNION system, review PRs, reactivate the antigen test indicator, identify a problem with the symptoms search indicator, tabulate for my boss how many people I supervise of what types (wait, 20? really? wtf), and build a chain of PRs to bring the production system back in line with the main branch.

While dinner was cooking I did five minutes on the rowing machine, then while stretching afterwards gave myself a massive charlie horse in my armpit and outer shoulder that didn’t really fade until bedtime. Not fun, made it hard to hold anything. Dinner together, then crossword, SG-1, and direct to sleep. Dreamt of helping run some sort of club with dues, mice in a machine shop, mounting a rescue to someone trapped and injured in a cave pool, having trouble cutting the tags off a new hoodie that smelled like Axe, finding a smoldering fire that should have been extinguished.

Yesterday I washed my hair, helped with the laundry, let the forecasting team know there’s no way we’ll have the database back up by this afternoon, organized the missing issues I generated on Saturday and dropped them on the server, then ran out of juice and watched SG-1 the rest of the day. I did ten minutes on the rowing machine while dinner cooked, and we did the crossword after lunch. I finished Deerskin, but I may go back and reread the end, since it accelerated to a stop pretty hard. Dreamt of hotels and bus systems, a complicated elevator, complicated room numbering systems that made it easy to get lost and even the computer couldn’t give us a straight answer on what our room number was and how to get there. Ugh.

Start slow

Yesterday I wrote tests for the state daily batch update, met with our claims data partners, met with R about extending folks’ contracts, met with Engineering, the robotics girls, and went to the frontend design review. P did the trash, which was nice because I was pretty wiped. Did 8 minutes on the rowing machine while dinner cooked, ate together, then crossword, Monster’s Expedition, no snack, sleep.

I started reading Deerskin by Robin McKinley, which has started out very like a fairy tale. We’ll see if that continues.

Yesterday I read the USPS standard for how to mail booklets, and it turns out I needed heavier paper for the covers, so I unstapled them all and added a layer of card stock. I ordered more almond butter and nutritional yeast, and threw in some mushroom powder and msg for kicks. P did the laundry, cleaned out a substantial part of the laundry room, and installed the wall-mounted accordion drying rack we’ve had kicking around for years. It is glorious and the laundry room is a much more pleasant place to be. I started reading The Palace of Lost Memories by CJ Archer, which is a pre-industrial fantasy that doesn’t know their world has magic yet. Feminist author, semi-misogynist world (& the “semi” part is a fun twist), very enjoyable so far.

Crossword after lunch, scrabble after dinner, SG-1, snack, sleep. Got in a quick workout while dinner was cooking and slept like a rock.

Yesterday I took a long walk in the center looking at purses and came up empty. M made carrot ginger soup and reserved some for me without onions, which was lovely. I went to Whole Foods and got some K-compatible snacks for when the holiday cookies for the rest of the house come out. I hemmed another handkerchief for T. Siege Tactics is done, and well-ended thanks to a nice chunky epilogue. There are more, which is good. G had the occupational therapist in, which helped a lot I think. He’s too close to see how much he’s improving over time, so it is good to have someone reviewing goals and abilities and other such metrics on a regular basis. Dinner was green beans almandine with pin oats for me, and eggplant rotini? for the house from a local catering company; basically stuffed shells with fried eggplant in place of the shells. Everything was enjoyed by all. Afterwards P and M played Dark Tower via pass-and-play on the iPad. Bed at the usual time. Dreamt of block days in high school french class, security clearance, an alternate universe where computers were developed early and we had a war followed by a lasting peace treaty with the AIs in 1882, and flying strawberries to a small research station in the far north in a sort of biplane.

Yesterday I re-toasted the nut and seed bars, and they are better now, if still mysteriously too sweet. I started laying out pattern pieces for the second chair seat, and got the top and bottom panels cut out. At work I found some more issues in the web console that I’m having trouble duplicating in unit tests. T moved our meeting to Tuesday. I added a user account to the nell cluster, in the process finding out my account was not listed for some reason in the root principal whitelist for the file server. Fixed that. M had to cancel our meeting; I’ll catch up with him next week. I successfully met with T, B, and F to nail down the research area for B’s masters thesis. I just barely missed the shuttle home, but it was nice out so I walked home through the woods. Excellent plan. Gorgeous day. Home, dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep. Dreamt of terrible second grade teachers, solar photograms, and the worst dinner party.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I sewed the lap, trimmed the zipper, accidentally slid the zipper pull all the way off, fixed it, sewed and felled the side panels, and sewed and felled the top and bottom panels. Echoes of Betrayal is good so far; I love the druids of this universe. It’s all very D&D fanfic.

At work I fixed a serialization issue with teaching sessions, passed all tests (having to fix it again, but better this time), and pushed to trunk and prod. Alas something is still broken with B’s bug report, so I’m not done yet. While tests were running I picked up an old helpdesk ticket J abandoned and E has checked in on. To get ahead of the obvious next step I implemented the dubious fix J recommended weeks ago but never confirmed. We’ll see if it sticks.

Walked home through the woods, partway with P ❤️. Didn’t realize how much I’ve missed that. A shortage of gorgeous fall days.

The replacement OXO dishes arrived in excellent packaging, like one of those lattice-cutting rolling pins they use for pie crusts was applied to paper.

Dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep. Dreamt CG was an instructor for a learning-to-bungie-jump class I was taking for the harness experience. Also Entropy was involved in some kind of strange stolen goods laundering. Yo-yos and such.

Yesterday I felled the armhole binding in place on the daisy print. Amberlough is getting heartbreaking and hitting a bit close to home. At work I got half of the Android SSL issue working on the public server, but couldn’t get the same solution to work for my dev machine. Something with keytool and aliases. Next week. I met with F and M and we discussed a possible approach to a problem M was having with variable bindings, and a way to test whether disjunction among several rules for a predicate can be trained into the system or not. I walked home through the park, and it was glorious. P had a department social on campus, but was home by the time my dinner was ready. I picked a young tromboncino from the garden. Crossword, then I finished Going Postal, had snack and meds, and went to sleep.

Yesterday I matched and sewed the side seams on the daisy print as plain seams, and trimmed pressed and machine-felled one side. We are in sewing room -henge at the moment, which makes it tricky to see while pinning and sewing, but I’m managing. I picked Contact back up, and it continues well. Interesting use of projecting, how the people who expect attack or humiliation show how they would treat those less advanced than themselves.

At work I finished optimizations at 2/3 the queries of when I started and no obvious duplications remaining, then started repairing unit tests. The Theo tests now pass, but the LIA ones are proving trickier.

I walked home through the park, which was gorgeous. Dinner, crossword, Gentleman Jack, snack, sleep. P’s making his CMU benefits selections, which kick in September 1. Excitement!

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I finished the hem on the daisy fabric, cut the placket for the black placket, and did the pressing for the placket. Goose Girl is incredibly enjoyable. Nearing the end.

I wrote checks for the new masonry contract that swaps the painted areas for the other two chimneys. At work I fixed the missing context issue and put in some more database optimizations. I met with F and M, who had loss plots to show and questions about maxent and how to convert the attentions for the variable distributions to an actual variable ordering to give to the prolog engine. I walked home through the park, which was lovely.

Dinner, crossword, Legends, sleep. Both lunch and dinner were a bit much so no snack. P was having some digestive issues but seems fine now.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I staystitched the armholes of the daisy fabric and started pinning the burgundy floral to tissue for same. I’ve been reading Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox by Forthright, who is a fanfic author who’s branched out into original works. Tsumiko reads like it — it’s quite catchy but the fetishization of Japanese culture and folklore makes me nervous. Themes: slowburn, dom/sub, enslavement, consent, nobility, infantilization, polyam, rape, forced birth, and I’m only halfway through. So...consume with caution.

I went to the dentist for a cleaning and mentioned the cracked&patched filling was still bothering me occasionally, so they took a quick X-ray but didn’t see anything obvious. I have an appointment reserved for a week after my next cleaning in case it gets worse over the next six months.

Walked in to campus through the park because the app said shuttles were cancelled earlier than expected due to the funeral, but got passed by said cancelled shuttle two minutes away from my house. Grr. I was carrying a case of seltzer too. Grr. At least the woods were pleasant.

At work I wrote another test to try and get alternate names for relations working, but it required an adjustment to the lexicon which broke a bunch of other tests.

Home, sat for a bit, dinner, crossword, Legends, snack, sleep. I ate the last protein bar. There won’t be any more until autumn as they don’t ship well in the heat. Might go back to experimenting with making them.

Mood has been shitty in the evenings, not sure why.

Yesterday morning we set up the test patches for the paint remover sampler. It’s supposed to sit for 12-24 hours, and after 12 it wasn’t coming up as the directions implied it should, so we left it overnight.

I put in the buttonholes and buttons on the black tank, which means it’s done! Technically. There’s some thread junk on the front yoke seam that I trimmed away, but I may decide to add some black-on-black embroidery if the remnants turn out to be distracting.

P drove us in, so he could go to a teaching seminar on data-driven reflections.

At work I fixed a bunch of bugs in the lisp deserialization/serialization code in the semantic parser, and made a commit in all three repositories. I put in a first pass of a typechecking implementation but it’s not passing tests yet. I met with F and M to discuss the new datasets F collected that M’s been trying to get working. findall is a beast.

I walked home through the park, did a turn through the garden and picked green beans, one radish, and one onion, and weeded a bit, getting the comfrey out of the way of the carrots and trimming back the calendula and nz spinach. Dinner, crossword, checked on the paint remover, Legends, snack, sleep. I finished Calling On Dragons and started Talking To Dragons, which has always been my favorite.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I wrote up notes on the finished prototype shirt for the changes
I want to make in the next one; mostly construction and seam finishing but
I also want to try a one-piece placket at center back.

P came in on the shuttle with me and we had lunch together, then he went
off to clean out his locker at the gym. I spent the afternoon doing a
pytorch tutorial, then fixed a bug in how deletions are handled, which
passed a bunch of unit test modules. Not all of them, but, progress. I went
to a meeting with F and M, and contributed some of the sample programs from
the ProPPR repository as possible sources of training data. We need a huge
pile of proof traces from logic programs with semantically-meaningful
predicate and atom names. Ideally it would be a pile of different programs,
but the top_X ones we built for ProPPR are huge enough to generate
thousands of proofs each. That will work, but we risk overfitting to that
particular naming style, which is unlikely to match what we’ll be using in
LIA.

I walked home through the park and listened to Foxglove Summer (extremely
great if a little heavy on the foreshadowing). Once home, sat for a bit,
then made dinner. P made pizza. Being back in proper routine again is a
major comfort. P took a call from his mom while I did dishes, then we did
the crossword, and played a module and a half of the new The Room
installment. CW uncontrolled fire in this one.

Snack, sleep. I dreamt of whistling at hummingbirds, exploring old
buildings, and parties at my french teacher’s house learning constructed
languages.

G update: he’s doing way better! Also D inquired around the neighborhood
about teens that might want to pick up some extra cash mowing their lawn
this summer, and it turned out all the neighbors had already worked out
like a whole schedule whereby they’d take turns making it happen. New
England.

health, P away, tv

Yesterday I sewed the back yoke seam, trimmed down the seam allowance, then
remembered I was going to fell the seams. I felled the first edge by
machine and started hand-felling the second. Next time I’ll make the seam
allowance on the back panel wider, or maybe I’ll fell it in the other
order? The placket makes the seam a bit weird.

I finished Midnight Riot. I like that his best tool seems to be getting
people to talk about themselves.

At work I redid how slots are generated and that fixed the inference
caching issue. Next is figuring out what’s going wrong with deletions; they
should be cascading but the slot tails are sticking around. I went to a
meeting with F and M, and we got through enough stuff that M will be
working on a pytorch implementation of the backward-chaining equations for
next time. I should probably do a tutorial or two as well so I’ll be able
to read her code.

I went to sqhill after work since it was gorgeous out. At geagle I got
emergency cumin, cheese, gf pretzels, and some sesame crisps that looked
interesting. I walked home via pocusset. It had been a while, so I forgot
Phillips connected earlier than just following wightman to the end of the
line. Ah well. Saw some great gardens.

Home, did a turn through the garden and picked snow peas and NZ spinach.
Dinner (was great, did a tarka of curry leaves and whole cumin), Flash,
snack, sleep.

Txted with P throughout the day — G’s surgery went well, no surprises. Now
it’s just trying to heal as intensively as he can so they can investigate
the next thing. P and M have been switching off cooking; P made chicken
tagine on Thursday and M made pasta sauce last night.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday P helped pin the other bust dart and side seam. At work I figured
out how to log what database queries were being run, and it turns out using
ORM objects was generating a huge pile of extra individual queries. I
stopped that, and query time dropped to 0.04 seconds. Nice. I went to a
meeting with F and her new summer intern M, whose project will be to
integrate an external neural prolog / soft unification system (sPyrolog)
with F’s common-sense reasoning module.

It was gorgeous outside and the next shuttle wasn’t for 45 minutes so I
walked home through the park. 🍃P met me at the trail exit for the final
leg. My speed is pretty slow, so the shuttle passed us on Schenley Drive,
but that’s fine.

Dinner, crossword, and then we spent a little bit organizing some house
maintenance work that’s growing overdue and figuring out what we have the
budget for this year. The flue and brick repointing are probably top
priority, followed by the back patio, and then the ground floor windows.
The roof is coming, but probably not this year. Haven’t done the math yet
to figure out what we pay cash for vs getting a home equity loan. I tend to
keep too much liquidity around.

Flash, snack, sleep. Raven Tower is faaaaaabulous but completely spoilery
and I’ll definitely be going directly from the last page back to the first
to reread it.

Dreamt of church, socks, antique sales, roasting potatoes in the ashes of a
wood fire, camping, stargazing, fireworks, getting lost with friends.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I found the artwork I want to show at the memorial reception, and
wrapped it for shipping. I went in early for a meeting with T, who is
pleased with my progress and wants to explore options for making the
semantic parser more robust next. I called the salon to see if I could get
in a haircut before we leave for Seattle, and scored one for end of day. I
did a pile of errands in the UC, sending off the art and also depositing a
check that’s been languishing for a while and also getting lunch at the
build-a-pasta place and a beverage at entropy. I spent the rest of the
afternoon releasing an old NELL dataset to the website, sending an email
blast about impending downtime to wipe and upgrade the cpu servers, and
starting a writeup of the issues I’m having with mod_wsgi in python 3 with
Django 1.11.

I bussed to sqhill, got an excellent haircut and caught up with my stylist
(she’s getting married! happy for them). Walked home, decompressed with P,
then dinner, internet and sleep. The formal academic drama with P’s student
is done for the moment, which is good; now he can focus better on the fun
part seeing his class present their excellent work to the client.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I archived the pattern for P’s pajama pants, and wrapped up all
the long scraps I’ve been saving into a ball of garden ties. I cooked
another batch of rice berry and quinoa, washed my hair, took the bus in. At
work I saved a checkpoint of the config package, then backed up and tried
an alternate approach which worked way better with less code. I submitted a
pull request to the author and called it fine, then went back to making
tests pass in the LIA code.

P’s struggles with one of his students continue. It sucks.

I walked home through the park, and caught what I’m pretty sure is a MOREL
growing randomly out of some GRAVEL between the bike exit and the bridge.
Wat.

Dinner over the latest Bernadette Banner video on the making of a
deerstalker hat for her Lady Sherlock costume, then I folded laundry and
watched a pile of Flash until P got home. We ate a snack together and
watched YouTube, then bedtime. Stayed up far too late.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I cut out a few embroidered motifs and sewed them down onto
sachet blanks. Then I sewed the sachets together and turned and pressed two
of them.

I started reading Bujold’s The Curse of Chalion, and it is ... stately.
We’ll see if a hook catches on later.

It was beautiful out so I walked in to campus through the park. No nettles
this year, but plenty of joe pye weed. At work I checked on the backups,
then fixed the final bug in the theo lexical forms, tweaked a few things in
the generalizer, and committed everything to the repository. I even
remembered to eat this time.

Home, P went out for -compatible cough syrup while I decompressed, then I
made dinner while he fetched tacos from the truck out front the coffee
shop. Fantastic smells. Dinner, crossword, Flash, snack, sleep. Had trouble
getting to sleep (hot), then trouble staying asleep (cold). Wtf, body.
