Yesterday I slept way, way in. I undid all the packages from last week, including almond butter and lentils from nuts.com, gift for A, gift for P, a ceramic tumbler by C I’d drooled over on Instagram, and a reimbursement cheque from CMU for the subscription web stack service I’d had to sign up for before we could switch it over to Delphi’s dime. Lunch, crossword, then I spent the afternoon making kale chips out of flat leaf kale. A much different experience than using the curly stuff. Packs better but I’m not sure I’d repeat the experiment. Did some embroidery to spruce up a gift, watched some holiday GBBO (the one with Derry Girls is hilarious and heartwarming). Dinner, scrabble, sleep. Dreamt of surplus auctions, rapid construction of an amphitheater, bad choral performances with the setlist out of order, and a really gnarly calculus problem.

Yesterday was the day we try not to buy anything. I made the remaining embroidered squares into wee cushions and cleared away all the scraps. I started cutting out pattern pieces for the first couch seat. After lunch we did the crossword, and P had a nice long nap. I made another batch of nut and seed bars. Dinner, Voyager, snack, sleep. Long involved dreams about some kind of field day, configuring the straps on a wing suit, various groups in different kinds of historical dress giving demonstrations, a frisbee golf course that was actually an old puzzle hunt, wild horses, the old square dancing crowd, folk dance students walking barefoot in an industrial park, and a subscription bakery.

Yesterday I packed up the couch back pattern, took measurements for the couch seats, and made a pattern for them. I cut apart eight of the wee embroideries and made them into squares ready for stuffing. While P was on campus grading I cleaned up the garden a bit. The arugula was out of control, so I cut it back and used the trimmings to mulch the paths. There are still carrots and parsley around if we want them. Spent the rest of the afternoon watching Voyager.

Yesterday we went to Costco for kleenex and oats, and also got cleaning supplies, nuts, avocado oil, pasta, and madelines. Lunch, then P went to campus for grading, and I watched Voyager and finished the abstract darning embroidery. Dinner, crossword, Outlander, snack, sleep.

I finished reading Hex Files and was pleasantly surprised by the denial of “brooding ex-boyfriend saves the day” in favor of “srznyr sevraqfuvc, zntvpny sheavgher, naq n arj-sbhaq frafr bs pbzcrgrapr haqre cerffher ...save the day, without even a mention of the brooding ex.” If you can stand wading through a few romance novel tropes to get there, I highly recommend it.

I am off from work all this week on my usual Thanksgiving break. Still respiratory; word from Dr R is the flu going around takes two weeks to flush out.

Yesterday I finished the circle motifs, re-hooped, and started an abstract pattern of intersecting darning stitches to use up scraps. I used an actual timer to keep track of mealtimes, which seemed to work ok. I watched Voyager and gently pushed fluids. I answered some questions from students that are getting suspiciously specific, so I’ll be coming back to those later today. Dinner, crossword, Voyager, snack, sleep. Dreamt of some conceit in which I had to visit all the colonies of Poland in a yacht.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

The respiratory symptoms linger. Yesterday I stayed home from the market, and P got apples (a shitton, since it’s the last market of the season), carrots, more different carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, a wee butternut squash, scarlet queen turnips, red peppers, Bulgarian pastries, pizzelles, a sesame cookie, mushrooms, pasta, and probably some other stuff I didn’t catch. After lunch we did the crossword, and I baked the nut and seed bars. I finished the diagonal filling on the circle embroidery and started some other circles to make it look less like a sarlacc pit.

[food] I’ve been having trouble regulating my appetite. I get ravenous, overeat, get nauseated, then by the time the nausea fades it’s past time for my next meal and I’m ravenous again. I know what I need to do — slow down the eating part of the cycle and under-serve — but so far I keep missing the mark.

I successfully ordered the socks, and also found a present for P. Watched some Voyager. After dinner watched an episode of Outlander. Wish the writers would find some other signal for “these dudes are bad” than r*pe.

Humors

Yesterday I stayed mostly down recovering. I did finish the chain stitch and start a diagonal laid filling for the rest of the circle sampler. I’ve been reading The Hex Files, a paranormal mystery romance by Gina Lamana. It’s fine, though the narration voice switches back and forth between first and third person in a way that was confusing to interpret in audio form for a good while. I watched more Voyager, and assembled ingredients for another batch of nut and seed bars. Afternoon snack was fraught but dinner was okay. After crossword P and I attempted to order a pile of new wool socks for our anniversary but at the last minute the website balked, so I’ll try again today. Dreamt of decorating the top floor of a house, rain, elevators, classes, a parking garage, a student learning two languages at once.

Yesterday I stayed home sick. I finished the raised whatchathingy filler stitch in the circle sampler, added a round of blanket stitch, and started a round of double chain stitch. I showered, which was painful but eventually got nice. Spent the day watching Voyager, drinking tea, and napping. P took the car down for inspection, then shuttled in to campus for grading and meetings. When he got back we did the usual dinner/dishes/crossword routine, then I watched an episode of Outlander and went to sleep.

Yesterday I did more research on coat cuts from the late 19th century, and put a few more stitches into the circle sampler. At work I finished the write up of the disambiguation study. I went to therapy and talked about food being hard but manageable, and what reading code is like. I went to the lab meeting and heard A give an alternate narrative about the idea for his thesis, which was good, and saw some preliminary results, which was surprisingly delightful. P had the car on campus for grading, and drove us home. Dinner, crossword, and directly to sleep, such as it was. Scratchy throat and post-nasal nonsense made everything difficult. Dreamt of picking beans and finding banana volunteers, putting up and taking down a wall display, and hugging a stranger who was having a rough day.

Yesterday I finished the second round of raised chain stitch and started a filler stitch to make the irregular width look intentional. At work I ran some more data once the narrative made better sense of what I already had. I met with M, and we talked through how his project will fit into the existing system architecture. P called out of his morning classes, but went in for his afternoon one. Minis are so short it’s hard to justify skipping a class. Home, dinner, crossword, Outlander, snack, sleep. Dreamt of solving a murder by being the only one to notice someone had stolen a rich person’s enormous plate glass back window. Also got chased by a peacock and made friends with a cat.

Yesterday I sewed the long piped seam on the second couch back, and installed both of them in the couch. P’s fever was down, so we went to the farmers market and got apples, quince, green pepper, Bulgarian pastries, mushrooms, a sourdough sesame cookie, pasta, turnips, carrots, onions, pea shoots, a sort of middle eastern pumpkin, pizzelles, paczki, and a Trini lunch for P. Home, lunch, crossword. I finished Time War, which was lovely. I switched to podcasts, and heard an ad for a podcast called Dressed that seemed intriguing; I combed through back episodes and filled up my queue with fashion history. Two loads of laundry. I finished the first round of raised chain stitches on the circle sampler and started a second. Dinner, Outlander, sleep.

Yesterday I finished the moon embroidery, re-hooped, and started an abstract circle sampler. I finished Deep Roots; it had a fun twist but wrapped up a bit pat? Plenty of stuff went wrong but resolving it all seemed pretty easy. Not sure how to explain it.

At work I finished the parsing script and collated all the data into another spreadsheet. I made some graphs, found some bugs, fixed them, and started writing up a report.

Home, and I roasted the sweet potato, squash, and parsnip for dinner. It was excellent. Crossword, Outlander, snack, sleep.

Yesterday I baked the nut and seed bars, finished darning Monster, and finished embroidering the moon motif. Deep Roots continues well, in spite of — I don’t know if it’s the writer or the reader but the changes in POV and flashbacks are pretty disorienting. At work I finished the first pass of the log parsing script and started a thing to automatically load the correct lexicon file so we can put some names to the numeric ids. F has started a submission to ACL, and I did a pass over the section on LIA. I grabbed five minutes with T to get approval for my new desktop and acquire the appropriate charge number. Home, added some background texture to the moon embroidery, dinner, crossword, then I started watching Outlander. Costuuuuumes! Snack, sleep. I dreamt of the kind of concert where everyone in the audience also brings a guitar and plays and sings along; a dance competition; losing my jacket and finding it again; living in an apartment and having a fuse blow; something about a haunted master bedroom in a half-built house.

Yesterday I finished cutting out the second couch back, and transferred all markings. I threw my above-zero coat in the washer and dryer with a couple of towels. We went to the farmers market and got apples, zucchini, a sweet potato, mushrooms, carrots, potatoes, turnips, parsnip, pasta, and Bulgarian pastries(!). We went to geagle and got more mushrooms, pepitas, pecans, almond butter, corn chips, and frozen green beans. P got a bagel at Pigeon. Home, lunch, crossword, then I dyed my hair! It was fun. I used oVertone rose gold for brown hair and vibrant purple, and have a nice dark merlot version of my normal hair color. Not exactly what I’d envisioned, but close. Snack, then I repaired my lightweight mittens that had got a hole in them, and worked on the moon embroidery. P and I figured out some of the conundrum that is putting JavaScript in PDFs from conTeXt instead of Acrobat. Dinner, Elementary, snack, sleep. Dreamt of women’s choirs, college sports, monasteries, and Jewish-Chinese puzzle boxes.

Yesterday I slept in, and my period arrived. Normally that would put me out for the day, but for whatever reason I felt like going for it, so P and I went on a Monroeville adventure. I went to the vegan food expo, and P went to Udipi and then Barnes & Noble. The expo was great fun, about 40% food stalls, 30% CBD oil, and the rest split between bath and body, clothing, and home improvement vendors. I got a cookie from my favorite bakery, a cinnamon roll from a new-to-me bakery, some really nice lip balm and salve, and some pajama pants from a lovely woman who just moved here from Boston.

Home, then I started another moon embroidery. Early dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack (the cinnamon roll is life changing and I regret not getting their name), more Elementary, more snack, sleep.

A package I was expecting has gone missing. I started a support ticket with the company; hopefully it was insured.

Yesterday was my birthday, and I took the day off work. I cut out all the pieces for the first couch back, finished an embroidery motif and re-hooped, listened to more Crown of Renewal, and snuggled under covers with Elementary. Mom called, M called, a nice card arrived from D&G, and I got some surprise flowers with an unsigned card, probably from dad. P got me a fascinating story told through the medium of origami fortune-tellers. A good day.

Yesterday we went to the farmers market and got apples, a blobby zucchini, honey, a red pepper, green beans, carrots, onions, turnips, a wee kabocha squash, leeks, and mushrooms.

I dampened the next panel of purple canvas and P helped try to pull it back on grain, with limited success. I ironed it dry, pulling it straighter, which may have helped more. I packed up the chair seat pattern.

I did clip out the circles on the raised herringbone embroidery, and replaced them with a much flatter stitch evoking fireflies. I moved the hoop, and embroidered a St Birgitta border I am quite proud of. Crown of Renewal continues well, though with a CN for child abuse. The rogue still kicks ass. The loose threads from all the other books are slowly getting worked into the final tapestry.

Lunch was good; (CN disordered eating) I overserved but was able to exert appropriate stopping willpower before overeating. As it gets darker and my anxiety gets worse that can sometimes be an issue; competing anxieties about eating feeling physically unpleasant but also worrying it will get worse if I continue/take too long but also worrying that if I don’t eat enough I’ll lose weight and that will feel worse all the time, not just at mealtimes, so I better eat as much as I can as quickly as possible before it feels too bad to continue. It’s not great. If I can slow down, stop before it feels bad, and eat bigger snacks to compensate, life is better, but it’s hard to remember that in the moment. Small victory is small but still a victory. (/CN)

Crossword, then P tested out a method for cooking meat without beefing the whole house: slow cooker on the porch. It worked fairly well, so maybe he’ll be able to clear the chest freezer this year before the next beef draft in the spring.

Dinner was good, watched some Elementary, snack, sleep.

Yesterday I baked the nut and seed bars. I forgot the cinnamon, but they’re okay anyway. Slightly too sweet.

I sewed the long piped seam on the second chair seat, clipped curves, and stuck it on the cushion. It’s gorgeous! Very pleased. I made paper patterns for the sofa back.

I finished the last couple french knots on the triangle embroidery sampler, re-hooped, and drew out a leaf pattern that I filled with raised herringbone stitch. I started a couple circle stitches for berries but they’re pretty squirrelly so I might try again.

I tried the whiskey deodorant and was impressed with the results. I tend not to shower on the weekends to save water and avoid being wet, but have slowly been getting more BO issues over the last year or so and was reconsidering the merits of the practice. Ethanol seems to be the answer— it totally reset the process. It’s a company called Pit Liquor if you want to try.

Lunch was fine, dinner was an executive function struggle. I managed something surprisingly tasty but there was less of it than there really should be. Made up for the lack with more carbs but that’s not really ideal.

Crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep. Dreamt of weird sororities and puppy road trips and talking music with K.

Yesterday I sewed cording into all the piping strips, and took measurements for the couch back cushions. I finished Limits of Power and started Crown of Renewal; already a CN for body horror. At work I finished scheduling the grammar meeting, and spent the rest of the day writing the demo IF game for a week from Tuesday. Z, unfortunately, didn’t have any specific ideas, though he did show me how to search ifdb more effectively.

Home, finished the rope stitch border on the triangle embroidery sampler. Dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack, assembled ingredients for another batch of nut and seed bars, sleep.

Hockeyyyyy

Yesterday I cut and pressed a big batch of strips for piping. I’ve been reading the next book in the Legacy series, Limits of Power. It’s good so far, though the gnomes have become suspiciously primitive and/or hidebound in the intervening centuries.

P and I had lunch on campus with J, who is in town for her regular poster session coordination event. Stories included P’s new job with the English department, the radio he’s building, the garden (tomatillos!), the farm (a foot of snow in September!), children getting older and going to college, and the recent election in Canada.

At work I started writing an Inform7 demo for my lab meeting, having been stumped so far with finding an existing one meeting all my constraints. I had a short meeting with T to get approval for a new dev machine and schedule a group meeting to go over the LIA grammar with respect to knowledge base references. I spent the rest of the afternoon writing an email to Z to see if he has any recs for Inform7 IF, soliciting meeting times from the group for the grammar thing, researching Facilities’ recs for desktops, and initiating a consulting ticket to see if I can mod one of their pre-approved configurations to have more disk space. My current machine was purchased in 2012, so I want to prepare to run the next one into the ground as well.

The shuttle ride home was delightfully seasonable, with blowing leaves and dim skies, a perfect Halloween night. I put a half hour or so into the border on the triangle embroidery sampler. Dinner, then we turned all the lights off and snuggled under covers to hide from trick-or-treaters. Crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep. Dreamt of summer camp, with rehearsals for a play in Latin and learning to play an early ancestor of the clarinet for a chamber piece before the whole campus started catching fire. Also dolphins, and improbable sharks.
