Over the weekend I made a batch of lentils and grits, showered, and played large quantities of Factory Town. Two more days until break!

Last week was my birthday, and I took the day off and spent it sewing, having a long bath with chamomile, and reading under piles of blankets. I put back pockets on P’s brown wool pants, reinforced the corners on the front side pockets, and patched a rip in his twill pants.

Over the weekend I made myself a new leather thimble, sewed a snap onto a cloth pad that had lost one, and made another batch of lentils and wild rice. At the farmers market we picked up a case of cider, and she threw in a bag of fresh marsh mallow roots. I sliced them up and put them in the dehydrator. If you’ve never had them before, they’re mucilagenous like okra, and smell gently of horseradish and turnips… which is why marshmallows (the confection) were invented, since you couldn’t get kids to eat them unless you drowned out the flavor with sugar. Marsh mallow is good for dry coughs, sore throats, and urinary issues, just be sure not to take within three hours of any prescription meds, since the mucilage coats your GI tract and can interfere with drug absorption. Some sources also say not to mix with diabetes meds, but I couldn’t find one that explained why. Otherwise marsh mallow is very safe, even during pregnancy. You can also use it topically as part of a poultice, since the mucilage dries into a flexible but supportive air barrier: instant bandage! As always, don’t sub herbal medicine for seeing a doctor, and always let your doc know what you’re using.

I gave myself a five day weekend! I finished the seersucker shorts for P, did some mending, trued and washed some fabric I bought for linings, and roasted a pumpkin (dubious succes; this batch of wild rice takes ages to cook and the pumpkin itself was disappointing). I finished Not Your Average Hot Guy (meh, skip it), read For The Wolf by Hannah Whitten in its entirety (lovely reimagining), and started rereading the murderbot books. Caught up on sleep too, and I’m working on resetting my sleep schedule for winter.

Yesterday I washed my hair, helped with the laundry, let the forecasting team know there’s no way we’ll have the database back up by this afternoon, organized the missing issues I generated on Saturday and dropped them on the server, then ran out of juice and watched SG-1 the rest of the day. I did ten minutes on the rowing machine while dinner cooked, and we did the crossword after lunch. I finished Deerskin, but I may go back and reread the end, since it accelerated to a stop pretty hard. Dreamt of hotels and bus systems, a complicated elevator, complicated room numbering systems that made it easy to get lost and even the computer couldn’t give us a straight answer on what our room number was and how to get there. Ugh.

Yesterday I roasted some diced apple, washed my hair, and put it up in rags to dry in curls. Haven’t done that since I was very small. After lunch I picked up a draft M had written for NAACL and read it for sentence fluency and word choice. I haven’t been able to make it to advisory meetings with M since spring break, and the amount of work he’s been able to accomplish in that time is truly impressive. I will be stunned if this paper does not get accepted. I motored on that until 4, which was unwise; overdid my snack as a consequence. Pushed dinner to 6:30, but was smart and underserved in favor of a more substantial bedtime snack. Avatar and dish towel hemming, sleep, dreamt of some kind of French hypermarché and smart carts and not being able to find the crackers, then of being surprise drafted into hostessing at some kind of bistro. I stressed out about keeping track of customers until I woke up. Thanks, subconscious, I’m aware.

I finished Enchanted and started the next book, Spellbinder. A new take on faerie, enjoyable so far.

Yesterday I set up an AWS budget for N, P helped strip the bed and flip the mattress, I washed all the bedding and hung it out on the line, washed my pillows and dried them carefully in the dryer, deep-cleaned my bedside table area and set it up with the day lamp as an experiment, vacuumed the bedroom, sewing room, and the hall, researched linkages that might work for the knee lever on the White, and watched Originals and sewed. I finished the remaining side seam and felled it, next is pockets. Lunch was good, snack was good, dinner was good, crossword had some tricky bits, slept through the night. Very satisfactory.

Yesterday a report came in on additional indicator outages, so I fixed or arranged to fix those. The new F pipeline had some not-unexpected failures, and I fixed those and wrote a thing to generate the full archive going back to the start of the survey in April. I spent the rest of the day noodling around on the internet, watching Legacies, cutting out and starting work on a pair of sleep shorts for me, and napping. We did the crossword after lunch. Dreamt of kittens, remodeling the house in LT to make it wheelchair compatible, people purporting to be from the census asking about any minors in residence in 2015, stacks of wooden nickels.

Past couple of days my journal time has gone to additional sleep. Yesterday, I fixed an issue with the API server, met with the person who caused it to go over some of the administration details so they’ll be able to help out in future, went to the big group meeting, met with Engineering, had therapy, and cleared a pile of administrative tasks. I’ve started to have some attention issues and have been leaning hard on todo lists to cope. Grandma called to catch up and ask if my CMU library access might help her with some research on sod houses in the 1890s, then dinner, crossword, finished mending a pair of P’s shorts while watching Crazy Delicious (it’s essentially GBBO where everything is a farce), snack, sleep.

Yesterday I washed the fabrics and dried them on the line. P took an early trip to geagle for bleach, vinegar, and paper towels. I washed my hair, and P cleared the spare bookshelf out of the way in the bedroom to make space for my work desk. I vacuumed, disassembled my workspace, then P moved the desk with a dolly I didn’t know we had? which was good, since the desk is a mid-century modern monstrosity that’s impossible to grip properly for lifting. We moved all the drawers and I reconstructed my workspace, and we’ll see how it goes on Monday.

Lunch, then I started in on the White electrics. Cleaned up my work area, brought up a mat and the soldering supplies. Struck out twice with multimeters and bad exploded batteries but then P found his which seems to be in working order. First was the lamp, since the parts are easy to replace if I screw up. It was a good choice, since indeed, I screwed up the toggle switch — it has lead-type terminals instead of something serviceable like solder lugs or screw terminals, and the leads are old and brittle, and I clipped them too short and won’t be able to replace them with new ones. Toggle switches are thankfully quite easy to source, and now I know not to make the same mistake with the lamp socket, which is similarly non-serviceable.

Dinner, crossword, She-Ra, snack, sleep. Dreamt of fast food joints with punch cards for free stuff, animal crackers, middle eastern dance, louvers, iterative detective agencies, second-floor balconies among beech trees.

Yesterday I met with indicators, did some population research, dropped the Y survey from the set L analyzes for anomalies, and helped debug a problem with one of the API replica servers. I went to the visualization team meeting and we talked about color scales and log bins and preliminary user study results. I followed up with A afterwards to work out some of the implementation details for updating the FIPS codes we’re using for counties, and how to specify a smoothed and raw signal to be distributed in the same map view. Met with L about process anomalies, then with Z and G for onboarding; they’re joining temporarily and bringing a bunch of expertise in industrial-strength data import pipelines. In the cracks between things, ran the F pipeline again on request, since the weights were delivered too late to catch the morning run; posted the signup text for the hackathon in the Slack welcome channel, and made a pile of notes on various GitHub issues.

Dinner, crossword, then P helped me resolve a minor dispute between my past, present, and future self and I took an evening shower to wash my hair. Morning-Katie is grateful for Evening-Katie’s sacrifice of DS9 time, so it was a good resolution.

Snack, sleep; dreamt of lockdown with P’s parents, a phoenix transformed into a brooch, some sort of intrigue played out in the rental car areas of an airport, flight attendants, CRT televisions, space travel, Jupiter’s moons.

Yesterday I discovered tiny ants in the kitchen, so P and I moved all the clutter out of the kitchen and butler pantry, and I mopped the bejeezus out of the kitchen floor. I used one of the languishing all-natural laundry tabs and some extra washing soda, and it worked great but did require a rinse pass. Exhausting but took the background stress level way down, having a clean kitchen floor.

Lunch, crossword, then reassembled the kitchen, including a deep-clean of the liquor shelves (good because it hadn’t been cleaned since the mouse problem and there was Evidence) and everything on them. Also cleaned the outside of the trash can, and a half-assed attempt at the inside lid.

Debugged an issue with a mismatch between the new F pipeline code and the reference implementation, which was pretty gnarly and felt good to nail down.

Dinner, DS9, snack, sleep. Dreamt of vegetable gardening, squash vines getting into the trees, the third floor of my grandparents’ house, ritual magic, thesis advising.

Yesterday I fixed an issue with data ingestion for the API, wrote up L’s findings on the problem with the new normalized weights from F, and slowly slowly fixed the bugs in the incremental pipeline variation. I now get the same results incrementally as cumulatively for my test data. Today I will check it against this morning’s run to be sure, and if all goes well we’ll switch over.

I did the laundry, and set up a spare monitor, keyboard, and mouse in my working space. Much easier to write code when you can see more lines at a time. Finished my reread of All Systems Red and started Artificial Condition again.

Dinner, crossword, DS9, snack, measured out ingredients for another double batch of nut and seed bars, sleep. Dreamt of heroes and villains, left-handed sewing machines, library staircases, making tortillas, kobocha squash.

Yesterday I delivered the ID lists, and prototyped a thing that will do that automatically. I went through a couple rounds of email with legal to get all the details of what data we’re supposed to be sharing with whom for the individual survey responses, and it was a good thing I did because there were a bunch of changes nobody had thought to tell me about. We had the big lab meeting, and R had a real actual agenda and a plan for what happens next and how we do it without burning everybody out. It includes hiring PMs and engineers and hopefully some customer support folks too, so if you know anybody looking, hmu. I met with F, and nobody had told them about the changes in the individual responses release process either. It was an extremely productive and extremely short meeting, very much my style. In the afternoon I looked at the status of the IRB modification, and they had flagged the consent form as needing a change — since we’re adding two typically-European locales, we have to be very sure that participants are currently residing in the US so that we don’t run up against GDPR. Fair, but it means F has to run the change back to the translation team. After that, I chased down an irregularity with a small number of IDs, which turned out to be F’s data team misunderstanding the change to the incremental window. I spent the rest of the afternoon and a sprinkle into the evening on crowdcast. Perhaps ill-advisedly we decided to merge the two relevant git repositories at like 3pm on deploy day, so while there weren’t any critical changes to worry about (C had FAQ changes she hadn’t tested yet but those are pretty low risk) there were (predictably) some surprises with ops that took B and D until 10 to resolve. Thankfully they’re pretty autonomous; I lurked in their Slack thread to keep an eye on things but didn’t have to fuss otherwise.

Somewhere in there, dinner and crossword and DS9, and chatting on facebook, and a long hot shower. Snack, and prepped a batch of nut and seed bars, and sleep.

Yesterday I made another batch of nut and seed bars. I did the daily responder IDs, and got a draft working with the qualtrics API. The F sensor group met with R, and I picked up adding state aggregations. I didn’t finish them until about 9pm, mostly because I spent an hour reorganizing how we pick which files to write. I did wind up telling R about my mental condition, and he seemed to honestly appreciate the information, so that’s good. I took ample breaks for meals and rest.

Crossword after lunch, programming after dinner, then snack and sleep. Dreamt of institutional road trips with K and R, collective naps, witchcraft, widowers, murder mysteries, downtown Seattle. Woke in the night sure that someone was walking around downstairs, but it was only the sound of my own pulse in my ears.

Yesterday I felt absurdly competent. I sorted through my dresser and clothes shelves and put together a box of donations, a box of souvenir tees, and a box of knits I can made underwear out of, and organized everything else by season. I did three loads of laundry, including the bedding and the prototype bulk bin bags. The twill tape shrinks, so the woven tape finish is the winner. I ironed the bags dry, and the napkins, and some new dish towels. Imager’s Intrigue continues; dude still hasn’t learned how to imagine other people and it’s looking like he might get away with it. I made a batch of currant cookies for P, using a new cutting technique that’s quicker and has less waste. Folded the laundry, ironed the pillowcases. The flat sheet still needs a good iron around the edges. Lunch was a minor battle, but snack and dinner were fine. Crossword, Repair Shop, snack, sleep. Dreamt of being unprepared for a choir concert, interrupted by an earthquake.

Yesterday I stayed home sick, though I did answer some emails for work. I washed my hair with the new low-surfactant stuff, which smells quite nice. I mostly air-dried it so we’ll have to see how it lasts. I watched the new Bernadette video on her sewing space, and a bunch of Voyager with naps and tea. P had an early doctors appointment, and went directly from there to campus to teach his Friday class. He was home at the usual time, then we did dinner, crossword, and more Voyager for me. Snack and sleep. Woke up coughing a few times; I expect this will linger longer for me than it did for P, who has the luxury of being neti-compatible.

Yesterday I finished the pattern adjustments, then laid out, traced, and cut out the second chair back pieces. I finished Divided Allegiance (can we have ONE BOOK in this series without a sexual assault, please) and started Oath of Gold. I ironed a linen remnant and traced out a grid for sleep sachets. I went to my doctors appointment, even though my Zoloft refill arrived (fast!) already with the intended new dosage. A nice surprise. Anyway everything is very typical for me health wise. Not ideal, but typical for the time of year. Things will start getting better again in February. Worked on thread-tracing the grid in the waiting room, as the chalk will rub off soon enough.

P walked home after work, and I hung out with him and did more stitching while he decompressed. Dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep.

Olin trans update: better but not yet good. Not transphobic per se, but a failure to understand the fragility of the space:

Yesterday I properly walked all the seams on the chair back pattern and made several adjustments. Still a couple more to do.

Lots of adulting. I arranged for a custom purse by an Etsy seller in earthy red tapestry fabric and brown leather. It’s my birthday present to myself; arrival before end of semester. I noticed my Zoloft was getting low, and apparently had run out of auto renews. Renewed that, but I had planned on switching to winter dosage at Halloween anyhow so scheduled a doctors appointment for Friday. Requested the whole day as PTO because fuck winter that’s why. Saturday will be rainy from 10-noon but I should really try the tai chi class in sqhill anyway. I am hunkering too much and starting to get exec dysfunction issues.

At work I went to a meeting with B, T, and F to plan Thursday’s call. It was surprisingly pleasant; I think most of B’s anxiety was not knowing what to expect and preferring overpreparing to under. T will show a demo video, F and I will give verbal updates of the student work and backend support finished over the summer, it’ll be good. I spent the rest of the afternoon writing up some light poking at the Enron dataset I did for M, and splitting off the in-depth but outdated LIA walkthrough from the more typical readme material.

Home on the shuttle with an exhausted P; Mondays have three classes for him and really wear him out. Dinner, some research into spice grinders, crossword, Elementary, sleep. More fragile after meals than usual; pretty sure it’s just the darkness.

Yesterday I worked from home, and started to address the mercurial sunsetting on bitbucket. I patched the mercurial-to-git exporter to pretend bookmarks are branches, since mercurial branches are a bit too intense for feature development and we use bookmarks for that instead. I got our primary repository all converted, tidied up the primary branches, made a new git repo on bitbucket, uploaded everything, and moved over the wiki. I apparently fucked up the user access, but I’ll fix that today.

I watched mom’s choir perform in semifinals on the livestream from New Orleans, which was super fun!! They looked and sounded great.

I walked up to sqhill and got a haircut; I’m back with bangs and I love them to bits. P picked me up and we hit geagle for grapes, almond butter, corn chips, herbal tea, ice cream, and put back the sugar-free cookies that warned about laxative side effects....

Home, dinner, and did a turn through the garden and picked a tomato, a lemon chile, and beans. We’re about to get a huge flush of lemon chiles; I want to try and make chile powder from them. Crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep. Three Body Problem continues fascinating.

Yesterday P taught an irrigation workshop at the etg, got some groceries at
the coop, came home for lunch, then went to see several of his students
walk at graduation. He got a mention in one of the student speeches; very
sweet.

I trued the ends of a linen/rayon/elastane crepe, prepped for washing,
washed it and the rest of the stack of fabric on hot, and hung everything
to dry on the line. The new presser feet arrived, and I practiced on some
scraps of flannel (difficult) and linen (easy). I will need more practice,
particularly on the starts of seams, but the potential for perfect
flat-felled seams is clearly visible. I finished Our Lady.

For lunch I made smiley tots and a quick red lentil, carrots, squash, and
peas thing with turmeric and coriander to go with. It was essentially
deconstructed samosas; definitely doing that again.

After lunch I made Katie snacks (2c puffs, 6T protein powder, shake
cinnamon; 1/2c syrup, slightly less butter, 220F, 1/2c almond butter) and I
have a good feeling about their structural integrity. New chocolate
topping; a vegan 67% from Honduras, with rum. Low acid, high nutty/roasted.

Afterwards I took in the fabric, ironed some of the corners that had become
twisted in the wind, and partially straightened the grain on one of the
bits of lawn that seems to have suffered stress from being on a bolt maybe?
Wonky in the middle anyway.

A shelf I’d ordered to go in the shower arrived, but didn’t stay up. Boo.
I’ve washed it more thoroughly and we’ll see if that helps.

I cut out a pair of lightweight sleep shorts for P, and made sketches for a
summer vest and herringbone pants for me.

Dinner, crossword, Flash, snack, sleep. I’m back on my daily flossing habit.

Wretched dreams of bad wheelchair access in buses, pulling the stop cord
only to get teleported to the middle of a busy intersection, networks of
freeways hostile to pedestrians, poor signage, sprawling malls and
convention halls.
