Yesterday was super productive! I released a bugfix to the website, fixed a gnarly problem with surveys running out of memory on the new host, added a whole new page to the website to host our job postings, and linked to it from the footer and the landing page carousel, released that and another bugfix, and finished editing all 200-some signal descriptions for the new sheet-based metadata.

P made ma’amoul dough to bake this morning. While dinner was cooking I went out and watered the garden and picked a couple handfuls of snap peas. After dinner we did the crossword, then I watched another episode of Pose, then snack and sleep. Dreamt of our house by the lake, making little books, sleeping under the stars, arborists, a T piano recital (??), hanging out with A on the fringes, cats.

Yesterday I gave the big-picture talk at all-hands, which was delightfully well-received by R. Proud of that. I went to therapy, and unpacked a load of stuff about self-awareness and personality; it was an unusually reflective couple of weeks what with the working-styles supervisor training, biannual update to the recruiter, getting interns up to speed, putting together that talk, and writing way more project specs than usual. Imagining how other people will interpret the communication artifacts I produce is always an exercise in confronting the ways in which I match or mismatch others. Spent the afternoon on one-on-ones and writing, going through the new metadata sheet for style, concision, clarity, and consistency.

Dinner, crossword, then I picked Lucifer back up. Such angst, many feels, catharsis withheld. Snack, sleep; dreamt of the evolutionary remains of great world-constructing elemental dragons, foiling police stings, some kind of engineering project partially reinventing compact discs (mostly unsuccessful), a college campus full of different kinds of co-working spaces and projects-in-progress.

I finished Discovery Of Witches and started Shadow Of Night, which is book two.

Yesterday I wrote up a brief spec for how to edit the new meta data table we’re proposing, which was good because it turns out a table in the database will make testing changes difficult and we really just want, like, a spreadsheet. I went to forecast eval and watched K wrangle researchers like an absolute boss, I went to team leads and presented the new menu structure options, briefly introduced the new meta data idea just to get a rough temperature (R will review it in more detail for next week), and then we got into the grungy details of how Rt’s new restructuring plan will affect OKRs, meetings, and the org chart. It was good. I spent the rest of the day planning OKRs for Engineering. This is the first time we’re doing a three-month period, and I’m a little anxious about being able to make accurate estimates. I guess experience is the thing you get just after you need it, so I’ll get better over time.

Dinner, crossword, Trinkets, snack, sleep. Long involved dreams about my Olin mailbox combination, a striker that created black fire, a wooden sailing ship, a shed that never existed getting infested with seriously brazen raccoons, and trying to get my folks’ dogs to uh take care of the problem but finding they’d been replaced by pom mixes and the size difference was just too hilarious.

I finished Record Of A Spaceborn Few and ripped through To Be Taught If Fortunate, which it turns out I barely remember. A series of vignettes about the wonder and possibilities of space travel woven into the imperfect fabric of human strengths and weaknesses. I started reading The Magpie Lord by KJ Charles, as there’s some new books out and I want to refamiliarize myself with her voice.

Yesterday we finished the flask rollout! Very pleased, it’s been a long time coming. I interviewed two more summer internship candidates, went to a pile of meetings, loaded some batch issues, and called it good.

Dinner together, crossword, P’s fever from the vaccine arrived in earnest, but ibuprofen and a cold compress worked a trick. Wynonna, snack, sleep. Dreamt of taking dance classes with A.

Yesterday I finished writing the BIGINT retrospective. It’s twenty-one pages, reflecting the epic effort that went into the fix, and will serve as a recipe book if we ever have to do anything like it ever again. Good riddance.

P’s evening class was async, so we had dinner together. Crossword had done excellent puns, then I started in on Stargate: Universe. Snack, sleep, dreamt of simultaneous reunion events in a model Versailles with antagonistic public transit, a weird play, getting pushed out of the dining hall, videogame relationship rpg-style undo/retry, and just a whole slew of awkward situations.

Yesterday I got to announce the successful restoration of all data history to the covidcast API, and it was pretty good. In the afternoon I worked on revising the draft copy for a new correlations interface for the website, fixing some last duplicates in the database, and drafting a PR to add L and V’s new paper on causal inference to our publications list.

Dinner together, crossword, Atlantis, snack, sleep. Dreamt of a terrible road trip a la that story of someone who had hired movers who showed up and found no boxes ready to go: “I didn’t have time to pack, so just... y’know :gestures:”

I started reading The Thousand Dollar Tan Line by Jennifer Graham and Rob Thomas. It’s book one of a Veronica Mars series, read by Kristen Bell herself, and it’s grand so far.

Yesterday we had the Fellowship wrap-up event, and it was. So. Good. R and I put together one-sentence thankyous for each Fellow and by the time we’d finished delivering them my face was hurting from smiling so hard. It’s been a wild six months, and doing without everybody will be hard emotionally, but they set us up so well technically that I know we’ll be okay.

Dinner solo, crossword when P finished class, Atlantis, direct to sleep. Dreamt of long summer afternoons reading comfortably together, very pleasant.

Yesterday the surveys pipeline failed due to an unexpected corner case in one of the older waves of survey data. I facilitated the all-hands meeting, had scattershot meetings all afternoon, but managed to finish my todo list at 3. I spent the rest of the afternoon interstitial time writing a recommendation letter for C. Writing rec letters is one of my favorite activities, but it was particularly enjoyable in this case just because C has been a complete dream to work with. So that was fun, and then I met briefly with my high school mentee and hear that her paper had been accepted as a finalist at regionals, which is stellar news. A grand way to end out the week.

Dinner together, crossword, then I started watching Stargate Atlantis. A major comfort. Snack, sleep, dreamt of a weird reverse version of the activities fairs from candidates weekend, where prospectives set up booths. Strange but fun.

Temple continues, with more sexual assault, oligarchy, bad healthcare, and unjust law enforcement. Adds an organized riot in protest though, so there’s some vindication.

Yesterday we learned that the improvements we pushed to metadata resulted in a 75% reduction in running time, which is amazing news. We now have enough runway to make all the improvements we want to how the covidcast data is stored. The rest of the day was meetings, notably including a quick orientation for C on what lab manager duties might be like in future. I also worked with A and B to do a database migration for the new version of the hhs hosp data schema.

In theory I could have gone to dinner at 6:15, but instead brain decided to clear up some work details that really could have waited until morning, and I didn’t actually quit until quarter to seven. Dinner, trash, crossword, snuck in an SG-1 episode under the wire, direct to sleep.

Dreamt of guitars, tattered fiber processing equipment (thanks subconscious, I’m aware), messy rooms, running workshops, turning stitch markers into earrings.

Ambassador 1 continues; the author is a much better linguist than biologist.

Yesterday I wrote up a doc for S’s draft conversion of the API server from PHP to Python/Flask, summarized a Slack conversation on incremental metadata updates into a github issue, worked with B to merge three outstanding epidata PRs to help Automation drop back below 24 hours worth of work to do each day, and started an R notebook to visualize the actual empirical data. Pretty low key yet productive day.

Dinner, crossword, SG-1, snack, sleep. Dreamt of attempting to cook in an old farmhouse kitchen that had been meticulously organized but had so many cupboards and drawers I struggled to make any headway.

I finished Snuff and started Ambassador 1: Seeing Red by Patty Jansen. So far it’s depressingly misogynist, its sense of which events qualify as high stakes is counterintuitive, and the exposition is utterly artless, but the worldbuilding hints at fascinating dynamics to come. I’m going to stick with it for a bit.

Yesterday the deliveries went off without a hitch. A new set of normalized weights were available, so I re-ran that analysis and everything came up great. I met with F, delivered the good news, and figured out the remaining questions for releasing the individual response data. I finished up slides for the group meeting and updated the demo map with the changes we’d decided on from Monday evening. Group meeting went well, though we ran over by a half hour. T attempted to grab a quick meeting with me but I guess I responded too late, because he never showed and didn’t otherwise respond. The rest of the afternoon went into generating individual response data, testing out and revising the incremental pipeline for that, writing a readme, and sketching out a wee program to generate data for L. I met with the indicators team and we finalized the interface text we’re recommending to viz, and I popped into the team leads meeting real quick just to confirm all is well. The readme for the individual response data wound up taking longer than expected (writing always does) so I didn’t quit for the day until 7, but it worked out. Dinner, crossword, sleep. Dreamt of epic secondhand shops, measuring out rice and beans into clay pots, a rare books room full of first edition romance novels, a self-made clothing competition, half-salvaged pianos, a jazz trio exit hazard, repairing electronics with dad.

Yesterday everything still worked, so I should probably ping IT and have them close my ticket. I checked and delivered the aggregations, then put the rest of the morning into further analysis of what exactly went wrong with the F weights normalization. Went to lab meeting, stepped out for thesis meeting with M, back to lab and gave the report for the indicators team. Lunch, fixed a backlog of changes to the database for the covidcast API, answered email from a team building a report for the DoD on symptoms checkers/datasets, and emailed the newest individual response data partner about our status and what to expect in future. Met with the indicators team, showed off and discussed A’s bubble plot prototypes and developed a recommendation to send to the viz team, got updates on a few dangling tasks, and released everybody to have a fairly chill weekend. Went to the team leads meeting (now the “senior staff” meeting; fancy), received some very nice compliments from R, short report. R is both exhausted and learning more how to operate hierarchical organizational structures, and has enough self awareness to know that both he and the group would benefit from someone with greater ability and stamina in that department. So, we’re starting a search for a sortof COO, first amongst ourselves, then slowly moving outward. It is good. After that, received a new set of weights from F and repeated the analysis, with promising results. Worked with N to figure out whether the community question data was sparse because of a bug or because that’s just how the F survey works; ultimately we determined it was the latter. We now have a dev demo up and I’m super pleased with it!

Dinner, crossword, sleep. I started re-reading All Systems Red and have no regrets. P went on expedition to Dylamato’s and got carrots, asparagus, and some local bread flour.

Yesterday for work I fixed the bug reports that came in over night. We had our lab meeting; I got promoted to manager for the crowdcast project. I tend to manage up hard when I sense an organizational vacuum, but that always feels super awkward, so it’s nice to know other folks were seeing it too. There were a few snags with the new deployment system but we hammered them out, and e-mails to users were released in batches starting at about 6pm eastern. Very chuffed.

I arranged with mom to have her call me when she got off work, then we had dinner, which was good. Call with mom was overdue so I’mma try and make it a habit. All is surprisingly well with them considering, but it’s good to have company, even if virtual, for the day to day struggles. Crossword, DS9, snack, sleep. Dreamt of a posh restaurant built into an old rambling house with confusing servant stairs. D was there, dissatisfied with T’s progress at learning piano. Then there were a series of time travel sequences and a surprise stream train.

Yesterday I made another batch of nut and seed bars. These were an experiment; the least weird sunflower seeds at the coop were roasted salted, but they were brined? Anyway the resulting bars taste a bit like butter left unwrapped in the fridge for too long but they’re minimally acceptable. I’ll try pepitas next time. Emerald Green... seriously judging these characters.

At work I organized all the fixes I made to get the sugilite parser running Friday into a pull request, then spent the rest of the afternoon writing scenarios that make use of both LIA‘s knowledge base building functionality and sugilite’s UI capture capabilities. Wore me out, but fun.

Home, folded laundry, dinner, crossword, DS9, snack, sleep. The bars are less weird with almond butter on them.

Yesterday I made another batch of nut and seed bars, which filled the morning. Ruby Red continues excellent. I made polenta and veg for lunch, but my ridiculous brain put the polenta in my lunch container, looked at the lidded pan of vegetables on the stove, thought “oh I already packed up the vegetables,” then put the lid on the polenta-only lunch container and left for the shuttle with utter certainty. Not cool, brain.

At work I went to a meeting with M and the advising team, which went great — M had a printed-out agenda with a copy for everyone and it really helped. Met with T about the sugilite code, which also went great, and came away with a list of potential projects I’m actually excited about.

Home, sat for a bit, dinner, crossword, DS9, snack, sleep. Dreamt, but they’ve already vanished.

Yesterday at work my machine was delivered! I started unpacking my data and installing my usual environment. I finished the PEG implementation of partial conversations and started a Visitor to generate the agent responses. I got a request from W to investigate upgrading CUDA on one of the GPU machines, and a request from B to see if I was okay with releasing some of my lucene code as part of their publication repository. Met with M to kick off his spring semester work. Chatted with C over txt about the PEG stuff, as a social check-in; part of my brain is like “whoa amazing everything seems possible now” and another is “this is not news. talking to people is good for you, even if/especially if it’s non-instrumental” so. thing.

Home on the shuttle with P, who is struggling a bit with first week of classes teaching full-time for his second ever and first winter semester. Put soup in him, did the crossword, sent him off to his evening class. Made tacos, which worked great. P got home, and we decompressed over the dishes. I watched some Voyager, then around 8:30 had an unusually intense panic attack. Echoes were all manageable, but I was up until 10:30 waiting for them to fade. No snack, just sleep. Long involved dreams about road trips in the Cascades, a rising tide that wouldn’t stop, childhood play dates, and gritting my teeth through a loop stunt pulled by a cheeky pilot. Also, rabbits doing headstands. That bit was pretty great.

Yesterday I made a new batch of nut and seed bars, light on the seeds since I’m out of everything. I finished the armhole on the daisy print, sewed the first seam on the armhole of the burgundy floral, and pinned for the second seam. Empire of Sand continues; add a content note for physical and emotional abuse. At work I finished the bugfix from Wednesday, fixed the tests it broke, and pushed everything to trunk. I went to a meeting with F and M, helped satisfice some stopgap fixes so they can get the system working in time for a quick internal user test next week before the paper is due on Thursday. We wrapped up in time for me to catch the shuttle, and I ran into P on my way out, so we went together instead of him walking home. We went to geagle and got almonds and pepitas (they were out of sunflower seeds), corn chips, grapes, ice cream, half and half, Fordhook limas, beer, and hair clips. My hair is getting so long! Having more styling options is great.

Dinner, crossword, Elementary— Holmes is very much Not An Asshole, it’s lovely and you should watch it if you’ve been somewhat dissatisfied by other series— then snack and sleep. Dreamt I met up with my ugrad mentor L and discussed some of the issues with uncle D, took an unexpected ride in a Tesla on autopilot, found surprise fruiting banana trees and planted the seeds (which were huge, nothing like true banana seeds).

Yesterday I made another batch of nut/seed bars using a sugar/honey syrup instead of brown rice syrup, and it mostly worked. They’re crisper/more crumbly but I got the salt balance bang on. Close to publishing. I trimmed, pressed, and machine-felled the side seams on the black shirt. Worked great; will duplicate on the others. I’ve gotten to a dense knot of mutual contempt between religion and science in Contact, and it’s stressing me out to the point of interference so I’ve switched to podcasts for a bit. At work I finished the first pass of extracting what’s going on with theo and sql, tweaked the logging, did a refinement pass, and started fixing things. Home, dinner, crossword (fun trick!), Gentleman Jack, snack, sleep.

Dreamt of turnips growing as weeds, and fire dandelions you could get matches from. A group house where some members were faeries and you couldn’t thank them. A pottery studio where I kept accidentally knocking over my own work, and someone had walked off with the slip-trailer.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I staystitched the burgundy floral and trimmed back the rest of the hems for hand-rolling. I started the second daisy hem and it is, indeed, slightly faster to have one end anchored to the work surface by a pin. I finished Tsumiko (very nicely ended but yes candy and trauma all the way through) and started the second book but it’s not as catchy. I might switch to podcasts and come back to it.

At work I fixed all the broken tests and made a commit, then started pulling out the vestiges of object/concept/field notation from the parser. I learned about syntax definition files in sublime so now I finally can get both highlighting and comments to work properly for sempre grammars.

Home, dinner, trash, crossword, Legends, snack, sleep. Pretty fragile post-snack with the usual frustrating time delay. Fine now.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I stay-stitched the yoke and armholes of the black shirt, and cut another front after realizing I’d cut the original apart to do my prototype 😕. I laid out the daisy print on tissue and pinned it for staystitching. Ruin continues well; I like the treatment of the fae.

The shuttle wasn’t running because they’re setting up for the Prix, so I ate lunch at home and took the bus in. At work I finished fixing the LIA server, wrote it up and sent out a notice to T and F. I organized the Trello and wrote notes on all the open todos. Went to a meeting with F and M and talked about debuggers. P had the car on campus and drove us home. Dinner, crossword, Legends, snack, cold shower, sleep. P has been needing to keep an eye on his heart rate with the heat. I didn’t have any trouble sleeping, but we might end up moving the AC unit directly into the bedroom after today. Heat index is going up near 100.
