This past week off work has been full of much-needed rest! I’ve been on a pattern of doing something semi productive in the morning or early afternoon, then playing Factory Town or napping until dinner. Although lbr it’s mostly Factory Town. Very sticky.

Wednesday we went to the coop and got baking ingredients and some fresh vegetables. A lemon, an orange, bell pepper, green beans, rice flour, sorghum flour, almond meal, brown sugar, candied ginger, coconut oil, vegan butter, hazelnut milk, and coconut-almond creamer.

Thursday I had a cavity filled.

Friday I made a gf flour blend from the rice and sorghum flours and corn starch, then made pie crust.

Saturday I made mince pies and attempted Canadian butter tarts. The orange and lemon peel went into the mince finely shredded, plus some of the juice, diced candied ginger, a pile of spices, toasted pecans, and the dregs of the bottle of wild ferment cider we’d been working through. Simmered until gloppy. Lined muffin tins with pastry, ran out of dough, made more. Filled and baked. Used the rest of the pastry to line mini muffin tins. Made butter tart batter with gf roux instead of the egg, and half brown sugar half maple syrup. The batter is ridiculously delicious so I’m a bit miffed I overbaked them into sortof toffee tarts instead, still edible but I want to try again. The mince pies are 💯, and I froze most of them so anxietybrain doesn’t freak out about their moist contents.

Sunday I washed my hair and did laundry, and clicked buttons to help N fix the survey machinery for work.

Monday I rescued some of the botched intermediate survey results from Sunday, and documented the process for N to complete. I took down the hem in P’s wool pants, which have shrunk by over two inches in the wash over time. I may decide to put the rest of the yardage through a warm cycle before making another pair. Anyway he tried them on to mark a new hem and they were still borderline too short, so I added a band of fabric to the bottoms. I made a new leather thimble (the other I’d made too small) for the finishing work.

Today I plan to complete the new hems and make paper snowflakes.

Over the weekend I made a batch of lentils and grits, showered, and played large quantities of Factory Town. Two more days until break!

Over the weekend I wrapped gifts for my folks and packed everything into boxes for P to ship today. Flipped the mattress, did most of the laundry, and started playing Factory Town, a really cute game on Steam about logistics. It’s pretty sticky though so I’ll have to be careful about play time. I ordered nuts and fruit for the holidays from a new place in Texas; we’ll see if they’re any good. P is now researching nut cracking equipment as most of these places offer interesting varietals but only in-shell.

Been a bit.

This past week at work was largely about reviewing progress on our summer goals, many of which are behind, but July turned out to be a wretched month for surprises. Food-wise I’ve been leaning on meal bars for snacks more often (GoMacro, coconut chocolate chip), but my weight is stable so it doesn’t seem to be doing any harm. I’ve been reading Braiding Sweetgrass and have some intense thoughts about it I’ll write up later. For now though, just a CN for suic*de; that was a surprise. Still working through Expanse. I went out to the garden while lunch cooked more often than not, to pick beans, water, move the hose around, and keep an eye on the tromboncini. We’ve started doing the bee puzzle in the crossword app as a warmup, and yesterday’s pangram was quite good. The White is fully back in its cabinet and runs acceptably enough for sewing. The sticky spot in the mechanism can cause an alarming vibration at some speeds but nothing life-threatening. We’ve ordered a desk for me to work at so I can move the cabinet back into the sewing room where it belongs.

I’ve got the coming week off, which was slightly overdue as I’ve been pretty exhausted. Looking forward to the rest and altered focus.

Yesterday for work I got most of a development environment set up on my work machine, project managered the fuck out of a todos list the weekend crew put together, did an analysis pass on the data from Korea, and generated a pile of demo plots for all the international data.

Food-wise I cut back on quantities by 10% or so and that seemed to help with the nausea fog. Hopefully temporary until my hormones chill out.

Dinner, crossword, DS9, snack, sleep. Dreamt of being a sortof lady in waiting for a small magic person, and solving mazes and number games with dominoes.

Yesterday I slept in, and my period arrived. Normally that would put me out for the day, but for whatever reason I felt like going for it, so P and I went on a Monroeville adventure. I went to the vegan food expo, and P went to Udipi and then Barnes & Noble. The expo was great fun, about 40% food stalls, 30% CBD oil, and the rest split between bath and body, clothing, and home improvement vendors. I got a cookie from my favorite bakery, a cinnamon roll from a new-to-me bakery, some really nice lip balm and salve, and some pajama pants from a lovely woman who just moved here from Boston.

Home, then I started another moon embroidery. Early dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack (the cinnamon roll is life changing and I regret not getting their name), more Elementary, more snack, sleep.

A package I was expecting has gone missing. I started a support ticket with the company; hopefully it was insured.

Yesterday we went to the farmers market and got blueberries, peaches, shishito peppers, jalapeños, beans, parsley, cilantro, tomato, zucchini, and a sourdough chocolate salt cookie for me. P got pupusas for lunch, which were excellent. I made a green stew of shishitos, chile, zucchini, Fordhook limas, rice berry, ground coriander and cumin, two chopped prunes, and a great big handful of finely chopped cilantro. Fabulous.

I did the laundry and hung it out on the line, and ironed two more fabrics and traced off and rough cut another shirt. The daisy print is pretty sheer so I traced an extra yoke on some black fabric in stash that was labeled voile but is more crisp than soft.

P decluttered the bathroom sink, which needed it. We did the crossword, and then P went to mow the front lawn but the mower wouldn’t start. Boo.

I finished Talking to Dragons. CN for the firewitch character who uses a particular ableist slur every other word, but otherwise lovely. (and, to think of it, same note, different slur for Calling due to the cats). Switching to Hoopla for the Amazon strike today and tomorrow; found a new book Kingdom of Ash and Briars by Hannah West. Good so far.

Early dinner, Legends, folded all the laundry, snack, sleep.

Yesterday I made a javaher polow using this recipe:
https://turmericsaffron.blogspot.com/2011/01/javaher-polow-persian-jeweled-rice.html

...with the addition of a potato tahdigh on the bottom of the pot. Also no
onions, cranberries instead of barberries, and the zest of a lemon instead
of the two oranges. It was super tasty; next time I will use less sugar,
more carrots, and sub sticky eggplant for the onions.

P made two kinds of bread dough, and while it was rising we went to an
early thanksgiving dinner at C’s. Her mother in law was there, as well as a
nice couple from D’s work. Everything was delicious— I had a wee bit of
carrot halwa, roasted vegetables, cranberry relish, and the rice, followed
by some of the apple pie/crumble I made yesterday.

I thought I had targeted quantities well, but spent the rest of the day
pretty fragile. P baked the bread for toast, then went to R’s for
hugesgiving. I stayed in bed and watched she-ra and darned socks.

Had some trouble getting to sleep, nursing a headache and loud brain and
reflux. Probably slept after ten; P got home at some point and gave some
sleepy conversation before passing out again.

Worth it.

Yesterday I spun some more Gotland, and took a closer look at my own
Ultimate Hat and decided to rip back and re- pick up stitches for the
lining on the new one. I spent some time at work on count-min-sketch stuff,
developing a pure linear algebra solution to the unsketch operation, and a
wrapper around the database to return sketches instead of full entity
listings. It’s mostly re-implementing stuff my boss already did, though
this way I 100% understand everything, and it’ll be another data point for
whether count-min-sketch will actually dug us out of the scalability hole
we’re stuck in a couple of stack frames back.

After dinner I made another batch of rice and blew the volume estimation
call by about 30%. Of course now when I do the math I have no idea what I
was thinking. How does 4 cups of storage imply 3 cups of rice + 3.75 cups
of water? It does not.

Weight is up. Food is good. Some trouble with intrusive thoughts, but mood
seems robust to them so far.
