This past week off work has been full of much-needed rest! I’ve been on a pattern of doing something semi productive in the morning or early afternoon, then playing Factory Town or napping until dinner. Although lbr it’s mostly Factory Town. Very sticky.

Wednesday we went to the coop and got baking ingredients and some fresh vegetables. A lemon, an orange, bell pepper, green beans, rice flour, sorghum flour, almond meal, brown sugar, candied ginger, coconut oil, vegan butter, hazelnut milk, and coconut-almond creamer.

Thursday I had a cavity filled.

Friday I made a gf flour blend from the rice and sorghum flours and corn starch, then made pie crust.

Saturday I made mince pies and attempted Canadian butter tarts. The orange and lemon peel went into the mince finely shredded, plus some of the juice, diced candied ginger, a pile of spices, toasted pecans, and the dregs of the bottle of wild ferment cider we’d been working through. Simmered until gloppy. Lined muffin tins with pastry, ran out of dough, made more. Filled and baked. Used the rest of the pastry to line mini muffin tins. Made butter tart batter with gf roux instead of the egg, and half brown sugar half maple syrup. The batter is ridiculously delicious so I’m a bit miffed I overbaked them into sortof toffee tarts instead, still edible but I want to try again. The mince pies are 💯, and I froze most of them so anxietybrain doesn’t freak out about their moist contents.

Sunday I washed my hair and did laundry, and clicked buttons to help N fix the survey machinery for work.

Monday I rescued some of the botched intermediate survey results from Sunday, and documented the process for N to complete. I took down the hem in P’s wool pants, which have shrunk by over two inches in the wash over time. I may decide to put the rest of the yardage through a warm cycle before making another pair. Anyway he tried them on to mark a new hem and they were still borderline too short, so I added a band of fabric to the bottoms. I made a new leather thimble (the other I’d made too small) for the finishing work.

Today I plan to complete the new hems and make paper snowflakes.

Yesterday I had off. I ironed the muslin; my spray bottle refuses to spray so I’ve taken it apart as much as is obvious to let it dry out. Imager’s Challenge continues. I went to the dentist for a cleaning and X-rays (all is well). Lunch, which took a weird turn due to period ugh and the remnants of dentist anxiety.

Watched Next in Fashion all afternoon. There’s been some kerfuffle online about Kiki and Farai. The challenge they got kicked off for was indeed bullshit; I don’t know who signed off on having everyone design for extended size models but without any extended size judges on the panel. Just. No. However, when you watch someone on GBBO get the same feedback three weeks in a row, you understand that versatility is a skill separate from someone being able to realize their vision. Without it, nobody stays on these kind of shows. Kiki and Farai have an important voice that fashion absolutely needs. After the second time they heard “too much going on,” that was the time to go for minimalism, and they weren’t willing to do that. It sucks, cause I’d have loved to see each of their takes on later challenges.

P came home for his break between classes, and we did the crossword and hung out together. He left for campus again and I made dinner, was all sensitive to smells but it seems to have worked out okay. Repair Shop, snack, sleep.

Yesterday I staystitched the armholes of the daisy fabric and started pinning the burgundy floral to tissue for same. I’ve been reading Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox by Forthright, who is a fanfic author who’s branched out into original works. Tsumiko reads like it — it’s quite catchy but the fetishization of Japanese culture and folklore makes me nervous. Themes: slowburn, dom/sub, enslavement, consent, nobility, infantilization, polyam, rape, forced birth, and I’m only halfway through. So...consume with caution.

I went to the dentist for a cleaning and mentioned the cracked&patched filling was still bothering me occasionally, so they took a quick X-ray but didn’t see anything obvious. I have an appointment reserved for a week after my next cleaning in case it gets worse over the next six months.

Walked in to campus through the park because the app said shuttles were cancelled earlier than expected due to the funeral, but got passed by said cancelled shuttle two minutes away from my house. Grr. I was carrying a case of seltzer too. Grr. At least the woods were pleasant.

At work I wrote another test to try and get alternate names for relations working, but it required an adjustment to the lexicon which broke a bunch of other tests.

Home, sat for a bit, dinner, crossword, Legends, snack, sleep. I ate the last protein bar. There won’t be any more until autumn as they don’t ship well in the heat. Might go back to experimenting with making them.

Mood has been shitty in the evenings, not sure why.

Yesterday I had the day off because I am now the kind of person where
dental work stresses me out, and I have plenty of PTO, so I am kind to
myself about it.

I sewed the side extension strips, inseams, and crotch seams of the pjs,
and basted the side seams to be double sure they’d fit as designed.
Success! I picked out some beige jersey from stash and cut out a waistband.

I had a filling and bite adjustment at the dentist, which went better than
expected. This guy is maybe just better at dentistry?

I did some reading for R, and fielded some last-minute emails to coordinate
an OS upgrade for some of W’s servers.

Food was fine, novocaine recovery was fine. P was in and out with teaching.
Crossword. Heart. Buttons. I started rereading Paper Magician in prep for
the new book in the series. It’s more petulant than I remember.

[CN:dentist] Yesterday I had my last cavity filled, and it was much less
stressful than the one two weeks ago, though I have a weird nerve on this
side that means I was numb up to my eyebrow all afternoon despite the tooth
in question being on the bottom.

Anyway, I weathered it, went in to work for a meeting since my boss will be
out of town for a week, then P drove us home, picking up the CSA box on the
way. Dandelion, kale, garlic, potatoes, carrots, turnips, radishes. The
weather wasn’t that bad, though the wind was brutal. Did a little more work
at home, and got the next phase draft running, though training is slower
than I expected so there may be a bug somewhere.

Knitting is starting to be hard on my hands, so I took the night off and
did some spinning on a support spindle instead. Love spinning in bed.

Yesterday I had a cavity filled. I was unexpectedly nervous about it, but
everything went perfectly— no need for extra novocain, no surprises.

I worked from home the rest of the day just to keep an eye on recovery, but
everything went fine. I even found a github project for pretty much exactly
the thing we want to do. It’s a tensorflow implementation of a siamese*
model for text sequences— you train two lstms so that the encodings are
near each other for two strings referring to the same entity, and far when
the entities differ.

I did some spinning, and some knitting, including the last decrease round
for the waist shaping.

P had a very busy day, with lecture in the late morning, snow, coming home,
picking up the farm box, coming home, more snow, and lab in the evening.
The roads were pretty bad by the end of the day, but he got through it all
safely. We watched YouTube together over a late dinner, did the crossword,
and called it a night.

Remarkably nice day for a dentistry day.
