Vacation log part two!

Tuesday I finished the hems, and we played the best damn game of scrabble of our lives to date with a board score of 822.

Wednesday P went out for a last grocery run before Christmas.

Thursday I made two more attempts at butter tarts, the second successful. They need a little bit of blind baking, just not as much as I did the first time. Cornstarch makes for a better texture than roux.

Friday we did a porch swap with F&A to relieve them of some mistaken lamb and chicken wings, and got bonus cinnamon pastries. We opened gifts (Rejected Princesses from P, a nice marble mortar and pestle from D, the best hoodie I’ve ever worn from M; the socks for P were a hit).

Saturday we did a video chat with P’s folks, then with mine, and P made fesenjan (a sour Persian meat stew with nuts). T sent me progress photos from the infinite lizard torus puzzle so that seems to have been a win as well.

Sunday I woke up with mega neck pain, so spent most of the day propped up on pillows, doing gentle exercises on a timer. I made a start at the annual zine.

Monday was better. P helped me make another batch of lentils and grits, this time with a parsnip thrown in, an excellent addition.

I started a workout plan on the 20th called “Couch to Crushing it” and it’s going well so far.

I’ve been reading Kill The Farm Boy by Delilah S Dawson and Kevin Hearne. It’s a bit like Shrek in its frenzied comedic tone but otherwise standard D&D theater. Enjoyable enough to finish but I wouldn’t bother recommending it unless you are hard up for lesbian representation in sword and sorcery.

This past week off work has been full of much-needed rest! I’ve been on a pattern of doing something semi productive in the morning or early afternoon, then playing Factory Town or napping until dinner. Although lbr it’s mostly Factory Town. Very sticky.

Wednesday we went to the coop and got baking ingredients and some fresh vegetables. A lemon, an orange, bell pepper, green beans, rice flour, sorghum flour, almond meal, brown sugar, candied ginger, coconut oil, vegan butter, hazelnut milk, and coconut-almond creamer.

Thursday I had a cavity filled.

Friday I made a gf flour blend from the rice and sorghum flours and corn starch, then made pie crust.

Saturday I made mince pies and attempted Canadian butter tarts. The orange and lemon peel went into the mince finely shredded, plus some of the juice, diced candied ginger, a pile of spices, toasted pecans, and the dregs of the bottle of wild ferment cider we’d been working through. Simmered until gloppy. Lined muffin tins with pastry, ran out of dough, made more. Filled and baked. Used the rest of the pastry to line mini muffin tins. Made butter tart batter with gf roux instead of the egg, and half brown sugar half maple syrup. The batter is ridiculously delicious so I’m a bit miffed I overbaked them into sortof toffee tarts instead, still edible but I want to try again. The mince pies are 💯, and I froze most of them so anxietybrain doesn’t freak out about their moist contents.

Sunday I washed my hair and did laundry, and clicked buttons to help N fix the survey machinery for work.

Monday I rescued some of the botched intermediate survey results from Sunday, and documented the process for N to complete. I took down the hem in P’s wool pants, which have shrunk by over two inches in the wash over time. I may decide to put the rest of the yardage through a warm cycle before making another pair. Anyway he tried them on to mark a new hem and they were still borderline too short, so I added a band of fabric to the bottoms. I made a new leather thimble (the other I’d made too small) for the finishing work.

Today I plan to complete the new hems and make paper snowflakes.

Yesterday we went on a small adventure looking for COVID self-tests, but came up empty. P has been hitting a low fever in the evenings, and in combination with the respiratory stuff we’d been assuming was asthma Bright on by allergies, it’s making him understandably nervous. He’ll go into campus Monday for a test instead.

I made another batch of crispy roasted fava beans, with pretty great results. This time I was pressed for attention, so I just brought the pot to a boil, slapped the lid on and stashed it in the turned-off oven with the door closed. By the time I came back it had cooled to 170F or so but everything was perfectly tender. I’ll have to repeat the experiment to get the timing right, otherwise wow, easy. They roasted for maybe 45 minutes at 425, then I backed off to 200 for hours until I gave up; another 15 minutes at 325 did the trick.

Did the laundry and hung it out on the line. Washed my hair, which is now long enough to be a whole production I only do twice a week. Had a cinnamon roll for snack, and otherwise sat and read fanfic with the windows open and a strong breeze. Dinner, scrabble (337, bingo RESEALING), internet, sleep. Dreamt of darning with fine wool yarns, carpool caravans, conductive textile logic gates.

Yesterday I made another batch of roasted fava beans (1/2t bsda toasted, boiled 190-200f for 20 minutes, with turmeric cumin and coriander) — less falling apart when draining and rinsing, but nonzero, and more hard ones after roasting. Not sure how to proceed there.

The additional cabling for the White arrived earlier this week, so I took apart all the bad soldered joints and put in new correct ones, using the 1-conductor cable for ground and the green wire in the 3-conductor cable for the additional hot. I’ll need to clearly label the other end for future travelers, but the 1-conductor isn’t UL-rated, and I figured it was better to keep the dangerous stuff in something nominally less likely to catch fire.

Laundry over lunch, and hung it out on the line after crossword. Face timed with mom while they worked on garden stuff, though my connection wasn’t too great. Snack, Lost In Space, brought the clothes in while dinner cooked. P made a big arugula salad from the garden. Scrabble after dinner (639, no bingos but I did play FASCIAE), then more Lost In Space, snack, and sleep. Dreamt of a cake recipe that made too much cake, too sturdy, but professed a lighter result if you then grated the cake and reshaped it. This did not, in fact, work.

I started reading The Galaxy And The Ground Within by Becky Chambers. No wayfarers so far but the story and characters are delightful all the same.

Yesterday I washed more sheets and hung them out on the line, and made another batch of crispy roasted fava beans (no baking soda in the soaking liquid, but I did throw half a teaspoon in the pot and toast it for a minute before adding water salt and a touch of turmeric and paprika; poached at 180 for fifteen minutes was insufficient, raised temp to 195 for another fifteen and was probably too much; rinsed in cold water, roasted with olive oil at 325-350 for like an hour and a half until crisp). After lunch we put in the rest of the laundry, did the crossword, then I washed my hair, took in the sheets and hung out the rest of the clothes, made a snack, and spent the rest of the afternoon watching Wynonna Earp. Definitely spent ages prancing around the backyard with a yardstick flipping the sheets back over the clothesline to untangle them; glad the neighbors already know I’m a bit odd.

Scrabble after dinner (682), then more Wynonna, snack and sleep. Dreamt of a K12 with ridiculous dress code/uniform, and someone trying novel pedagogy techniques that somehow resulted in flooding but also more naps.

Yesterday we did the laundry, and I made another batch of roasted fava beans (1/4 t baking soda in the soaking and cooking water, poach for 20 minutes) which seem to have a substantially reduced chance of breaking teeth. The rest of the day I finished up some seams I’d forgotten on the charmeuse shorts, and watched more Universe. Snack, sleep, dreamt of leaving careful instructions for a nervous sitter.

Yesterday I did the laundry and made kale chips. I made some bay and cedar incense, and attempted to use marshmallow root as a binder as an experiment. It worked beautifully, but I wailed on it too hard in the mortar and busted out the bottom 😔. Clearly I should be using a brass mortar for pounding, and reserve ceramic ones for grinding only.

Scrabble board score in the 590s. Dreamt of a teff-based paneer and yogurt substitute, an Olin instructors reunion, a bedspread covering two beds, a music puzzle about famous murders, making mobiles, giving zoo/circus creatures a bath.

I finished Raising Steam by Terry Pratchett. Slightly more scattered than I remember Discworld books being, but it all ties up neatly in the end.

On nye I had therapy and made pie dough. Yesterday I washed my hair and made mince pies. They are good, though I’m a bit miffed at Bob’s for changing their gf flour formula to lean so heavily on chickpea flour as they are aggressively bean-y as well. For the filling I used dried cranberries, apples, and raisins soaked in brandy for a few days, a touch of sugar, vegan butter, spices, and crunched up gf pretzels as a thickener. Worked great! They have a Canadian butter tart/pecan pie goo vibe that I like a lot.

Yesterday I washed my hair, P did the errand run to pick up the vegetables, and I made one of the bunches of kale into chips with a touch of almond butter this time. The wild rice order arrived, so I included it in another batch of lentils and stuff. It cooks quicker than expected, but is delicious even when overcooked. Into wee jars and into the freezer for lunches. Crossword after lunch, scrabble after dinner (737, three bingos). SG-1, snack, sleep. Dreamt of refactoring a gnarly web app, C had a daughter for some reason, a small extra-neurotic dog, a skittish kitten that was sometimes a falcon, vacuuming a dead lawn, a dinner party, a western-style split level, taking a walk and getting pelted with a flock’s worth of bird shit, public nudity, dad getting really into restoring vintage cars.

Yesterday I made wee silver dollar tortillas, oiled them and attempted to bake them into totopos horneados. They are extremely delicious but borderline too crunchy, so next time I will add baking powder and maybe press them thinner.

I made kale chips. Wilting them first in the olive oil and salt seems to be a good idea for the flat leaf variety we’re getting from the farm these days.

P and I did the laundry. I washed my hair. We did the crossword after lunch, and played scrabble after dinner (654, mostly due to excellent plays by P late in the game). SG-1, snack, sleep. Dreamt of weird college where I was supervising some of the students, then the normal “I’ve been forgetting to go to this class all semester” but it turned out to be a cool one on making kinetic sculpture music boxes filled with students who struggled to come up with any ideas and weren’t giving the instructor anything to work with, so it turned out okay. I designed a really neat möbius path and helped diagnose a problem with the HVAC system. wat.

Yesterday I made crackers. I am out of practice, so they weren’t that good, and I’m glad I only made a small batch. The trick will be figuring out how to hydrate the starches (lentils, cornmeal) while maintaining some amount of shortness. I split the batch in two and got one with a nice short texture but having hard crunchy bits, and the other more homogenous but tough and rubbery-stale-like.

I ordered more oats from a different local farm this time, and some wild rice from a tribal organization in Minnesota. Some of the wild rice will apparently be poppable, so looking forward to that.

I remade the mugwort and lavender incense with more lavender to see if I like the adjustment.

We did the crossword after lunch, and played a surprisingly effective game of scrabble after dinner (640 something board score?) in spite of crap tile draws and a densely packed early game. SG-1, snack, sleep. Dreamt of getting into ship engine design and steering control theory for racing.

Crown of Dragons continues, drawing together several loose threads from earlier books. Very satisfying.

Yesterday I did the laundry, made kale chips, and submitted a batch of recommendation letters for M. There are more to go; doing the one for Columbia wore me out since they require university letterhead (wtaf?). The cloth wrap from Handmade Arcade had arrived, so I also wrapped a few gifts. The post office is pretty tanked everywhere so they may not make it for actual xmas, but we’ll get close.

After dinner we did some research into under-sink water filtration systems, to see about retiring the pitcher for drinking water and the kettle for neti pot water. While we’re at it we’ll replace the main faucet with a pull out one for conservation of sink holes, but that will require more research since faucet reach is a primary issue for me.

Scrabble (612 board score, and we hit all eight TWs), snack, sleep. Snacks are starting to get weird; it may be time to try chiwda again.

Finished Throne of Dragons (terrible ending, just gave up), started Born of Dragons.

Yesterday I slept way, way in. I undid all the packages from last week, including almond butter and lentils from nuts.com, gift for A, gift for P, a ceramic tumbler by C I’d drooled over on Instagram, and a reimbursement cheque from CMU for the subscription web stack service I’d had to sign up for before we could switch it over to Delphi’s dime. Lunch, crossword, then I spent the afternoon making kale chips out of flat leaf kale. A much different experience than using the curly stuff. Packs better but I’m not sure I’d repeat the experiment. Did some embroidery to spruce up a gift, watched some holiday GBBO (the one with Derry Girls is hilarious and heartwarming). Dinner, scrabble, sleep. Dreamt of surplus auctions, rapid construction of an amphitheater, bad choral performances with the setlist out of order, and a really gnarly calculus problem.

Yesterday I spent the morning paging through the Handmade Arcade online site. After lunch we did the laundry. I had a call with my mentee about negotiating salary, and then I made another batch of nut and seed bars and finished hemming the second dish towel.

Yesterday was our anniversary! In spite of the world being on multiple kinds of fire, we’ve had a year full of enjoying each other’s company and taking shelter in our relationship. Really quite fond of the whole experience.

In the past we’ve done a date to the corner coffee shop for combo anniversary drinks and small business Saturday, but the pandemic unfortunately was too much for it quite early on, and it is no more. We did some book shopping online instead.

I made some more wild rice mixture for lunch, then diced and roasted the rest of the baking apples over the course of the afternoon, taking turns with GBBO and dish towel hemming. Dinner, scrabble, GBBO, snack, sleep. Dreamt of some kind of git conflict -generated explosion disease, an array of hot tubs, an alarming number and variety of knives, and a bunch of old keys of mysterious origin.

Yesterday I drilled out the receptacle for the speed controller, and shaved down the epoxy to fit a smaller hole. Assembled, everything works, but it’s a bit tighter than the first prototype. I did a dry fit into the actuator assembly, and it looks like it’s going to work, though I will need to construct a more rigid linkage bar for the return.

After lunch I roasted a sweet potato with an experimental method: soak in water first to remove starch, then dry thoroughly to remove water, then shake in cornstarch (wat), then shake in oil. It works! Crispy outside, soft buttery sweet inside. I’ll use less cornstarch next time but otherwise it’s a winner.

I did some window-shopping online for gifts, then watched a bit of Avatar and finished a dish cloth that’s been waiting for me to remember how to graft in garter stitch. Turned out probably great, but the final verdict will wait for the laundry.

Dinner, crossword, Avatar, snack, sleep. Dreamt of a Taylor Swift fan meet-and-greet workshop, navigating Boston-Camberville on a bicycle, and giving Jon Stewart brutally honest feedback on a bit about pull-start gasoline-powered kitchen appliances.

Yesterday I roasted some diced apple, washed my hair, and put it up in rags to dry in curls. Haven’t done that since I was very small. After lunch I picked up a draft M had written for NAACL and read it for sentence fluency and word choice. I haven’t been able to make it to advisory meetings with M since spring break, and the amount of work he’s been able to accomplish in that time is truly impressive. I will be stunned if this paper does not get accepted. I motored on that until 4, which was unwise; overdid my snack as a consequence. Pushed dinner to 6:30, but was smart and underserved in favor of a more substantial bedtime snack. Avatar and dish towel hemming, sleep, dreamt of some kind of French hypermarché and smart carts and not being able to find the crackers, then of being surprise drafted into hostessing at some kind of bistro. I stressed out about keeping track of customers until I woke up. Thanks, subconscious, I’m aware.

I finished Enchanted and started the next book, Spellbinder. A new take on faerie, enjoyable so far.

Yesterday P went to the last market of the year and got Bulgarian pastries, apples, potatoes, fresh and dried chiles, mushrooms, bok choy, napa cabbage, a wee butternut squash, and kale. I did the laundry, made some lavender mugwort incense, cleaned the third floor toilet, and turned half the kale into kale chips. We did the crossword after lunch, which was very tricksy. After dinner I watched Avatar and did more dish towel hemming. Snack, sleep, creepy dreams of people disappearing one by one at a research event, and some kind of surrealist Rube Goldberg device for waking up and making breakfast. Eugh.

Enchanted is finding its voice, and while it’s wallowing more than I’d like in a sadistic hopeless situation the protagonist’s got into, we now have three whole excellent characters who are not men, and at least one flat one.

Yesterday I unpacked the nuts.com order, diced and roasted most of the rest of last week’s apples, washed robes and towels, and otherwise watched Avatar and hemmed dish towels. I am On Vacation and it is Great.

The crossword was a miserable slog, but I dreamt of being creative director for a fashion magazine version of Conflict Kitchen, so that was fun.

Yesterday morning I made another batch of nut and seed bars, diced and roasted the last of last week’s apples, and submitted the nuts.com order. Lunch, then we did the laundry and hung it out on the line, did the crossword, then I dumped ~a dozen bags of leaves on the paths in the garden.

More fun with the White: next in the knee lever/speed controller is affixing a spur gear to the speed controller shaft. I decided to pare down some of the epoxy so there would be a flat surface for the gear to sit against, but in the process wound up unseating the shaft. I took advantage of the opportunity to fix the bad concentricity, which required boring out the hole closer to center, putting the shaft back in, shoving in some epoxy shavings to help fill the gaps, then super gluing. I’m still deciding whether to pin the thing in place. It’s a good idea but I’m not sure how accurate I’ll be able to be without a press.

Snack and more Protector. Overdid the snack :( and wound up nauseated more of the rest of the afternoon. Put off dinner until 6:30, then just bailed on the whole idea and had some apple chips. Protector, early bedtime. Feeling alright now. Probably time to actually switch my meds dosage.

Finished Rocannon and started Planet of Exile, which I found harder to stay focused on at first but is now hitting a groove. Remarkably matter-of-fact about homosexuality for 1966.
