Last weekend I finally got the White sewing! I had to shim the needle/presser bar assembly to get the needle alignment right, and I added another washer to the top tension adjustment knob so it would compress the spring washer properly. The set screw is working for now but if it works itself loose I may need to have Dad drill and tap the hole in the face of the knob that’s meant to hold it snug. At some point I’ll take all the knobs off and put markings on them; for now they’re just “you know what you’re doing, right?” knobs. I watched some videos to figure out I had the needle clamp on backwards, and that the top thread had to go through the tension disks before the takeup lever (which I should have guessed; the other Brother does it that way). I reviewed a PDF of the manual to get that the flat side of the needle goes to the right, then everything worked! I’m so pleased I didn’t have to adjust the timing, that would’ve been a bear. I did have to drop the bobbin tension to get a good stitch but it should be all set now.

On Labor Day we had lunch in the park with F&A and it was wonderful. Then I went home and ruined a batch of crispy roasted fava beans 😭. Hypotheses include under-boiling and overdoing the alkali. Snacks this week will be bean-less, alas.

Been a bit.

This past week at work was largely about reviewing progress on our summer goals, many of which are behind, but July turned out to be a wretched month for surprises. Food-wise I’ve been leaning on meal bars for snacks more often (GoMacro, coconut chocolate chip), but my weight is stable so it doesn’t seem to be doing any harm. I’ve been reading Braiding Sweetgrass and have some intense thoughts about it I’ll write up later. For now though, just a CN for suic*de; that was a surprise. Still working through Expanse. I went out to the garden while lunch cooked more often than not, to pick beans, water, move the hose around, and keep an eye on the tromboncini. We’ve started doing the bee puzzle in the crossword app as a warmup, and yesterday’s pangram was quite good. The White is fully back in its cabinet and runs acceptably enough for sewing. The sticky spot in the mechanism can cause an alarming vibration at some speeds but nothing life-threatening. We’ve ordered a desk for me to work at so I can move the cabinet back into the sewing room where it belongs.

I’ve got the coming week off, which was slightly overdue as I’ve been pretty exhausted. Looking forward to the rest and altered focus.

Yesterday I had the day off. I flipped the bedding and spun the mattress, washed everything and hung it out on the line. I went through my favorite grain farm online and ordered more oatmeal, popcorn, and a couple different kinds of grits. I also ordered from a new place in North Carolina just to see what they’re like. I made another batch of lentils and millet and packed it up for the freezer. After lunch we did the crossword, then I made some progress on the gearbox for the White. I trimmed the spacers to fit and filled the other side with wee sections of spring. I cut an access hole for the trim pot then started putting everything together. Remains is just the linkage, then I can do a load test and tune the pot. In the late afternoon I met with J about her journal paper, then A about her job hunt. Dinner, scrabble (597, bingo for STRIDES), Expanse, snack, sleep. Dreamt of some imaginary girls night, winemaking, figs growing on ficus trees, rhubarb as a root vegetable, ropes courses, giving a very easygoing dog a bath, something about mapping out classic tourist destinations in Europe, and drones in the context of sexual harassment. I woke well-rested but I’m maybe regretting putting hops in the linen closet bags?

I finished Tooth And Claw, which was a doozy. It got much heavier and much deeper, real fast, a whiff of Wizard Knight about it. Highly recommended.

Yesterday I moved the third axle in the speed control gearbox for the White into position, and what do you know but it works great. I cut a spacer to keep the new gear in place. Next is cutting an access hole to the minimum speed adjustment pot, then seeing if the existing linkage bar will do or if I need to make a new one, then a bench test to set the pot, then installation into the cabinet. End is in sight!

After lunch I had therapy, which involved a lot of zoning out since it’d been a busy week and I was pretty exhausted. Crossword, snack, Expanse, dinner, more Expanse, snack, sleep. Dreamt of dorms and money and dance class, weird suites and fundraising and onboarding new admins.

Yesterday I did a bleach load with the shower curtain, shower mat, and canvas bags, then let it run again with an enzyme pack. P deep-cleaned the tub and sink. A good team effort as the shower was getting pretty gross.

I tinkered with the gearbox for the White. I had the alignment off by almost an eighth of an inch, which was tricky to fix — elongated the hole, then wired in a sortof shim to keep the shaft in place. It almost works now; I left too little clearance between the linkage gear and the pot gear, so while they stay out of each other’s way going one direction, they bind up going the other. I’ll have to move those holes a bit too, then we’ll see if it’s stable enough that way or if I need to call this version 0.1 and rebuild it.

We did the crossword after lunch (wtf was OBELI doing in there, great word but woof), and scrabble after dinner (672, and we didn’t even get to two of the triples). I finished Slippery Creatures, which was beautifully done. There’s a kidnapping situation with some psychological aspects that might be triggering for some, but if you can set yourself up to get through that the resolution is totally worth it.

Yesterday P helped me bench-test the electrics for the White. I took the motor and lamp of the body of the machine, put that assembly and the power and speed control assembly on a tray, and took it all out to the back porch. We set up a surge protector on a GFCI outlet, had a fire extinguisher ready, and talked through the test protocol — turn on the surge protector, test the lamp switch, test the main power switch, test the speed controller. One-handed operations only for all humans involved. We clamped all potentially moving parts to the porch railing, then went for it. Good news is nothing caught fire or sparked or made threatening noises, and the lamp works perfectly. Bad news is the speed controller mechanism turns the knob the wrong direction, so the “off” position is actually full speed and the “full throttle” position is... less so, but still probably too fast. It’s unloaded of course, but I’ll need to plan to adjust the little minimum speed set pot on the speed controller while everything is hooked up to the machine, which may be tricky to arrange. At least we know the electrics are excellent, so we won’t need quite the fanfare next time. I took everything back to my work table, took the speed controller off the gearbox, and started playing with some spare gears to see if I could fit everything in the same enclosure without screwing up the clearances. I looks like I can, especially if I adjust the length of the linkage bar to the knee lever. I marked all the new holes and left it there.

Crossword after lunch, scrabble after dinner (663, one bingo, didn’t draw the Q until there were too few tiles in the bag for exchanges, and one of us had all the vowels and the other had all the consonants). I finished season one of A Discovery Of Witches, and it looks like they want a subscription to a whole-ass new streaming service to get at season two, so I’m sulking for a bit. Rag And Bone is cleaning up the denouement. I dreamt of being on the Board of Directors for a college, but being too tired to stay awake through meetings; also something about a bad-ass cashier with excellent aim and some kind of floating produce section that required you to toss ping pong balls at them.

I was supposed to roast more beans, but didn’t get started until 3, and gave up and fridged them. This batch will be split butter beans, which I got as a possible alternative to favas.

noooooo

Yesterday we went to the farmers market and got Bulgarian pastries, asparagus, rhubarb, hard cider, a basil plant, mushrooms, baby bok choy, spring mix, and lettuce. P deep-cleaned his produce drawer when we got home, then lunch, rhubarb sauce, and crossword.

I took the back off the cordomatic, reproduced the missing connection, but maneuvering the board out of position so I could get to the contacts must have wiggled whatever it was back into place. My least favorite fix. I squished the connections a bit harder in case something had been loose, but they were pretty firmly stuck in there, so 🤷🏼‍♀️. Put the board back, connections still worked, put the case back together, connections still worked, so... I guess it’s fine now?

Snack, then watched a Netflix series from the UK called Feel Good, a substance-abuse -flavored coming out comedy which cut off rather abruptly at the end of its too-short first season. Nertz.

Dinner, scrabble (635, no bingos, sloshy vowels), then I found A Discovery Of Witches on Amazon. Matthew is a bit weirdly-cast maybe? Though he is meant to be Occitan so maybe it’s more that my brain is bad at casting from the peninsula. I’m worried they’ll screw up some other stuff trying to shoehorn the story into a live-action format, since her inner voice was such a vibrant part of the books. But, we’ll see.

Before bed I was checking alerts for work and it turns out my machine on campus is down AGAIN. With today a holiday I’m comfortable popping into campus to power-cycle it again, but ugh. Sucks.

Dreamt of Christmas in an art studio with H and B, playing some fascinating games with generative pattern glazing, something about cookie recipes, and reading under covers in a tent in the backyard. Dreamt separately of a nanobots puzzle with species-specific heads-up displays in outer space that turned out to be an origin story for the Borg.

I finished Flight Of Magpies and started Jackdaw.

Yesterday I took the power assembly out of the White and installed a switch to turn everything off. I tested connections afterwards and discovered that while ground and neutral were fine, hot was not. Luckily I remembered to channel my inner sparkE and do more hunting before taking things apart, since it turned out the switch was installed just fine, and the problem is either in the plug or the cordomatic. Hopefully it’s in the plug, since I really don’t want to take the cordomatic apart again.

I made another batch of lentils and wild rice, with mushrooms, carrots, pepper paste, some smoked paprika, coriander, oregano, and a bay leaf. Turned out excellent, so I may be back on the coriander train.

Ah fuck I was supposed to roast more favas this weekend and I didn’t set any to soak. Wellp.

Lunch, crossword, packed up the lentils, washed my hair, then spent the rest of the afternoon reading. Dinner, watched an episode of Frequency which I haven’t figured out if I like yet, then played scrabble with P (636, 1 bingo) before sleep. Dreamt of college courses getting overrun by crustaceans, the first girl to join the high school football team, and some weird dream-logic crafting operation requiring knitting needles and a crochet hook simultaneously.

Yesterday we went to the farmers market and got Bulgarian pastries, asparagus, rhubarb, marigolds, mushrooms, fiddleheads, mushrooms, chives, spring mix, and a fig balsamic vinegar. There’s a new seller there of hard cider called After The Fall that I’m excited to try in a future week. After we got home I set a bunch of last week’s mushrooms to cook, then went out and planted the marigolds in the garden. Lunch included some asparagus, which was delicious, then I set the rhubarb to cook while we did the crossword. Packed up the rhubarb, then went to work on the White. I hooked up the terminal block, then reinstalled the whole power assembly into the desk and marked where the main power switch should go before running out of steam. Snack, brief call with my mentee, Lost In Space, dinner, more Lost In Space, snack, sleep. Long dreams about iteratively shopping at an Indian grocery store for ingredients and equipment as if it were a Zarf-hard game, then finding all my high school friends had got really into knitting-based RPGs and had a huge forum online discussing patterns, materials, and character sheets. As you do.

Yesterday I made another batch of roasted fava beans (1/2t bsda toasted, boiled 190-200f for 20 minutes, with turmeric cumin and coriander) — less falling apart when draining and rinsing, but nonzero, and more hard ones after roasting. Not sure how to proceed there.

The additional cabling for the White arrived earlier this week, so I took apart all the bad soldered joints and put in new correct ones, using the 1-conductor cable for ground and the green wire in the 3-conductor cable for the additional hot. I’ll need to clearly label the other end for future travelers, but the 1-conductor isn’t UL-rated, and I figured it was better to keep the dangerous stuff in something nominally less likely to catch fire.

Laundry over lunch, and hung it out on the line after crossword. Face timed with mom while they worked on garden stuff, though my connection wasn’t too great. Snack, Lost In Space, brought the clothes in while dinner cooked. P made a big arugula salad from the garden. Scrabble after dinner (639, no bingos but I did play FASCIAE), then more Lost In Space, snack, and sleep. Dreamt of a cake recipe that made too much cake, too sturdy, but professed a lighter result if you then grated the cake and reshaped it. This did not, in fact, work.

I started reading The Galaxy And The Ground Within by Becky Chambers. No wayfarers so far but the story and characters are delightful all the same.

Yesterday I started on the remaining wiring work for the White. I soldered and heat-shrinked the connections to the speed controller and the cable that will carry the modified power to the motor, before picking up the connector that goes on the other end and realizing that I needed 4 conductors, not three. Well, shit.

Lunch, crossword, then I ordered 6 feet of single-conductor cable for the White plus another 6 feet of the 3-conductor just in case, and threw in an inline switch so there’s a way to shut the whole thing off.

Snack, Wynonna Earp, dinner, scrabble (641, 1 bingo), more Wynonna, snack, sleep.

I finished reading A Drop of Magic by LR Braden, which is an urban fantasy set after a war between the humans and fae, and a commentary on authoritarianism. It had the opportunity to be a commentary on blood quanta as well, but alas treated it at face value. The magic system is good though and the protagonist kicks absolute ass, so I plan to continue with the series.

Yesterday we did the crossword after lunch, flipped the mattress, then I washed some of the bedding and hung it out on the line. P helped me reinstall the White into the cabinet, then I made all the measurements for cabling. I was worried there wouldn’t be enough, but we’ll just make it. There’s also juuuuust enough clearance to take the machine down and up without hitting the new speed controller box if you slide it a half inch to clear the handwheel and then back again to clear the second spool pin. Yeesh. I took the cordomatic back out of the cabinet for the remaining cutting and electric assembly.

Snack, finished The Good Place (definitely cried at “will you do me one more favor”), dinner, scrabble (649, one bingo), Wynonna Earp, snack, sleep. Bizarre dreams about hostages, taco stands, precarious prototype mechanisms, whittling, caustic floodwaters, time limits, and forgotten chirality.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I attempted to use a screw and nut to secure the sliding carriage on the knee lever assembly, with no luck. Instead I traced out where I needed additional clearance on the brass housing, took everything apart again, made the cuts, reassembled everything, et voilà, the original thumb screw went in perfectly. Next is figuring out the lengths of all the cabling, so I installed the knee lever and the cordomatic in the desk. Everything fits! I may wind up short on cabling though.

I did the laundry, cleaned the third floor bathroom a little, and watched The Good Place. I finished the Conjurer Fellstone Trilogy (meh). I started Ink Witch, an urban fantasy based on Egyptian mythology with tattoos and tarot. Dreamt of an encyclopedia of snacks with an inspiring set of different kinds of bananas, a free-form remedial calculus class, dorm room remodeling, survival camping, petty feuds about who gets to be the wolf.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I figured out the purpose of a mystery piece of the knee lever assembly: it’s retaining clip that holds the lever up out of the way when it’s not in use. It attaches with a pair of screws of the same diameter but different pitch to ones used elsewhere, and they’re both quite wee, not long enough to go in over the brass speed controller housing. Instead, I took everything apart and cut holes in the housing big enough for the heads of the screws to pass straight through. Cleaned everything up, and started reassembling.

Crossword after lunch, then I intended to start some pepper seeds, but it turns out I didn’t order them. So, no peppers in the house garden this year, unless we get starts from somewhere else.

Did a FaceTime with mom and dad while they were on their way to jar return (?) over the Hood Canal bridge. Things are well with them, aside from unseasonably low rainfall this spring.

Snack, then wasn’t in the mood for grimdark so I picked The Good Place back up. I wasn’t sure where I’d left off so ended up re-watching several episodes. Excellent details, very amenable to a second time through.

Dinner, then more Good Place, snack, and sleep. Epic dreams of space flight, research, civilian/military conflict, ecosystem conservation, elementary school art classes, spooky perfume.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I cleaned, oiled, and installed most of the remaining knee lever parts. The Conjurer Fellstone trilogy continues reasonably well, if a bit pat. I washed my hair after lunch and let it dry twisted up in a towel until dinner, resulting in some nice beachy waves but weird puffiness around the part. Crossword after lunch, scrabble after dinner (629, no bingos but we did score 96 on an optimally-placed “quiz”), then Wynonna (major body horror cn on episode 8), snack, and sleep. Dreamt of a physical manifestation of the onion router, hamsters, bulk foods in five-gallon buckets, distributed social computing, fig-bearing vines, Austrian exchange students, blueberries, and being mysteriously unable to locate any kind of recipe for Hyderabadi sour dal.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I completed the linkage for the knee lever speed control mechanism for the White. It works, though there’s some racking due to the extra distance between the spur gear and the linkage along the pivot. I might do a v3 to address that, but for now it’s fine.

After lunch I put in a bleach load, then noodled around on the internet. Snack and Wynonna Earp, a supernatural procedural with historical and western elements. There’s some graphic violence but they front so hard it’s sufficiently comical not to raise brain alarms for me.

Dinner solo, more Wynonna, crossword when P got out of class, snack, sleep.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I continued to cut and shape the linkage for the lever mechanism on the White. One hole left to drill before test assembly. I’m a little concerned about malleability at the wee arm that holds the spring, but if that becomes a problem I can probably shear off the one from the original arm and rivet it in place.

Lunch solo, submitted a Penzey’s order for paprika and cinnamon, watched some Kipo. Dinner together, trash, crossword, attempted episode two of Irregulars before noping out from body horror and watched Legally Blonde instead. Good choice, there’s a lot more support network and grinding on instrumental motivation in there than I remember. Snack, sleep, dreamt of solving weird VR puzzles in order to get the wifi password, delinquent but heartwarming teens, wedging clay for throwing, a wee beachfront property with my cousin J and with my grandmother from thirty years ago.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday P drove me down to the second ave RiteAid for my first Moderna shot. It was straightforward, no complications, a little weird being in a building that wasn’t my house but I did get to spend the fifteen minute wait time looking at All The Things so brain was pretty happy about that.

Back at home I took a pile of measurements on the lever mechanism for the White. I’ve decided to redo the linkage to be more like the original, which requires a ninety degree bend. I drafted the new part, then lunch and crossword, then transferred markings, and made the first few cuts and the primary bend.

Snack and Kipo, then tried out the first episode of Irregulars, which is okay but a little heavy on the jump-scares.

Dinner solo, with ibuprofen since the injection site was starting to do its thing. Bed and phone games as my brain started to fill with cotton balls, then sleep early. Dreamt of classrooms aboard a spaceship whose technological secrets were long forgotten, keeping skunks out of the garden, and some kind of platformer that used slices of bread as power-ups.

I finished Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire, which was lovely and you should read it. It’s a YA contemporary boarding school fantasy about coping with life after returning from adventures in $fairyland, when home isn’t home anymore.

I started reading The Conjurer Fellstone Trilogy by Marjory Kaptanoglu, but it’s barely begun so I don’t have notes yet.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I worked on the White. I hammered a flange into the end of a bit of tubing, drilled a hole for a cotter pin in the other end, and voilà, a pivot for the linkage. I made some spacers out of coiled wire and it seems to work great. The connection on the other end is not so sanguine. I tried the original spring but it doesn’t work too well in this alignment; an additional bar pivot works okay for pulling but obvs not for pushing; next I’m trying a sort of staple-shaped doohickey that should capture the business end of the lever mechanism while minimizing backlash.

Snack, finished Universe, then dinner, scrabble (630!), and picked back up the Winx series on Netflix. Snack, sleep, dreamt of a new house in an incorrect, not-bumpy West Seattle with loads of wraparound porches and weird neighbors who solved their drainage problems by digging ditches through our yard, digital micrometers, dishes going missing like socks, religious enclaves, riding down one-lane roads on a sortof pushcart.

I started reading Mr Kiss And Tell by Rob Thomas, book two in the Veronica Mars series. It’s better at tracking multiple plotlines than the first book, but they changed readers and this one uses a much more feminine voice for Mack, which is pretty jarring.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I continued with the White. I cut a spacer from some tubing, but wasn’t able to get it narrow enough to fit. Instead, I coiled some wire two or three times around a spare bit of shaft, and it seems to work great. The rest of the afternoon went to cutting and shaping the linkage between the lever and the spur gear.

P got his first dose of Pfizer on Tuesday, and started to feel some minor effects in the late afternoon. A nap helped.

I ordered almond butter and hand sewing needles from the internet. Paprika and slippers (P’s finally gave up) are next.

Dinner together, trash, crossword, Universe, snack, sleep. Dreamt of translating hieroglyphics, pottery puzzles, a big potluck to celebrate someone’s birthday, and slightly disused woodland trails.
