Yesterday I pressed and pad-stitched in the interlining for all the plackets. I sewed and felled the back yoke seam on the black shirt, but the top thread was acting up again, this time actually getting jammed in the bobbin case somehow. After getting it unstuck I took a break to unscrew the foot plate, take out the bobbin case and inspect it (it’s perfectly fine, no damage to speak of), vacuum out the lint, and put everything back together. I still had a handful of hiccups on the final seam, but with less of a nest on the underside. My next suspect is that I’ve got the wrong top thread for this needle, which would be annoying.

Over breakfast I attempted to deep-clean two of the cupboard doors, but they are still tacky so I’ve gotta try something else.

We went to open studio and I burnished the insides of all the bakers. Some of them were a little dry for it, but I got it to work eventually.

Home, food, then canning research. Nobody seems to mix elderberries and blackcurrants, so I might just do two separate preserves. I want to do up some plums too for savory applications.

I finished Goose Girl (nice twist) and started the sequel, Enna Burning. Less sing-song, probably because it’s not, or not obviously, based directly on a classic fairy tale. More complexity in the characters and morality, too.

Dinner, crossword, Legends, snack, sleep. P had made kofta, which seemed like it would be fine but I had a weird reaction to the raw beef smell in the sink, so dealing with that. It is good to challenge my environment periodically but certainly not pleasant.

Yesterday I staystitched the yoke for the daisy fabric. We went to open studio and I trimmed four bowls/bakers. I tried to trim a closed form P threw but I broke through the bottom 😢

After clay we went to Target and geagle for some time in air conditioning with bonus groceries. Seltzer for work, almond butter, prunes, lima beans, avocado oil, brie, seedy gf crackers, chips, almonds, P snack mix, magic doritos, sausage, pita. Also some robe hooks for the bathroom, and a tp stand and a new scrubber for the third floor.

By then it was like 3pm so I made confusing-meal, which we ate downstairs. It was hot. Spent the rest of the day hiding in the AC and trying to stay hydrated. We did the crossword. I trimmed the hem allowance to size on one of the shirt pieces and started a rolled hem while listening to Ruin. It’s a little extra at times and more and more often but augh I want to see what happens.

We played scrabble and got 604, not bad.

Cold meal around 8 with the new QE, then sleep. Some panic attacks about cheese and heat stress.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I did the ironing. We went to open studio and I made three larger (2#) bowls/bakers and trimmed three of the bakers from last week. I brought an old protein canister to use as a water & reclaim bucket and it worked great. Home, lunch, crossword, then I was possessed by a small cleaning spirit and vacuumed the sewing room, hall, and bits of the bedroom and nest. I traced off another shirt on the black challis, this time with a double thickness in the yoke. There’s a yard of challis left; I can probably get another shirt out of it if I use a contrasting yoke. I do still have all that dupioni I got for yokes a couple years ago.

Nearly finished with Talking to Dragons.

Dinner, Legends, snack, sleep.

G update: search as they might, they could find no mass anywhere. I would think it was a smudge on the earlier image if it hadn’t shown up on multiple scans from multiple hospitals. Whatever it was, it’s not there any more. He’s homefree, though the next few times he has GI symptoms like that they want to see him for a scan to be sure.

Yesterday I put in two more rows on the current crochet sample. We went to open studio and I tried out the new earthenware clay. It was drier than I prefer for throwing, so I dug up my memories of wedging videos we watched at some point and mixed a bunch of water into it. Threw four small baking dishes just over a pound each, and had P try out the last hunk; he made a closed form that will be a garlic roaster. Since this is our own clay we have to do all the reclaim ourselves; I brought a bucket to use for that. We’ll see how it goes!

We went to Costco and got paper products, oats, grapes, cookies, chips, cheese, and some almond mix. Home, and I had lunch while P went to the coffee shop to cool off and get some work done. The new iron arrived! Lol, far too hot for ironing. Spent the rest of the afternoon managing heat and reading period drafting/sewing/tailoring manuals on the internet. Trolling through Bernadette Banner video descriptions for links. Crossword in there somewhere.

Dinner, meant to put the plums in the dehydrator but forgot. Legends, snack, sleep. Was up at 1 to make sure P hadn’t passed out in the study, and at 5 with the district and bizarre phenomenon of being suddenly convinced I was made of bees. ???

Yesterday I learned how to do a hand-rolled hem, and it is so much easier than using the rolled hem foot I may never go back. I did about half of it so it doesn’t even take that long.

P used the new purple lead tests on the paint on the front of the house (the paint is red, so the usual red ones from the hardware store are suboptimal) aaaand they came up positive. We’re going to have the masonry guys hold off on the front until we can get an abatement team in. I mean I’ve always wanted to get the paint off the bricks but this is not the way I wanted to do it. Probably another $3k.

October Man continues well; the reader started out a bit stuffy but is relaxing into it.

Lunch, work was good— I’m back into debugging use case tests; met with F and M and dug up some more likely datasets for them from the proppr archives; flexed my data processing muscles on cleaning them up. Dinner, crossword, then we went to the PCA to help load the soda kiln. It made for a late night but it was a very pleasant gentle social experience. I dropped someone else’s pot 😔 which sucked, but it helped that T wasn’t having the most on top of it day either. Mistakes aren’t fun but that doesn’t mean they’re not normal. You figure stuff out. P made a possible client connection for the spring web design course with a guy who works in a slipcasting studio. He had really fabulous stuff to put in the kiln — ducks cast from hunting lures, horseshoe crabs, turtle shells. He plans to help with unloading on Monday but I kinda hope some of his stuff winds up at Braddock so we can all see how it turns out.

Home, snack, sleep.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I overslept, and put the morning into work stuff. We’d forgotten
to run the dishwasher so I did that too. My tailoring supplies shipment
arrived, with fancy buttons for shirts, finer thread, finer needles, zips
for the couch cushion covers, etc. Lunch, then I got word the server
rebuild was done, so I started the configuration process for that. I met
with some high school interns for an hour to tell them about my job; that
was pretty cool. F came by to get help on installing a python package from
source on her Mac, that turned out to not be identifying her OS version
properly. There is something fishy with her gcc too, though that takes ages
to upgrade whether you get it from homebrew or Xcode so we broke for the
day. Home, dinner, trash, then the final soda fire class at the Braddock
pottery. Had a cluster of small panic attacks on the way there that were
probably due to the heat plus eating so close to a drive. Once I got
underground, things were fine. Decided on splatters of glazes, including
spodumene, gold shino, and white liner. The white in particular should look
great against the electric blue flashing slip.

Home, dishes x2, crossword, sleep.

G update: the tube is out! They want to take him off the IV heart meds and
onto oral ones, so he had his first sip of water in a while. Success! Very
good news.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday we went to open studio and I finished the bottoms on the mugs and
soap dishes for the soda kiln. There was some question of when the bisque
would be fired and whether our stuff would make it in, but we got email
from K that it wouldn’t go until Monday, so we should be all set. P had a
rough throwing day and lost another handle on his mugs, so we didn’t stay
long.

We went to Target and got seltzer for work, fruit snacks, coffee filters,
decaf tea, chocolate cinnamon ice cream, almond butter, and I managed to
locate one of the styling products fb recommended so got that to try.

Home by 12:30, put the laundry in the washer, lunch, hung the first load of
the wash out on the line. I spent the afternoon drafting pattern changes to
the sleeveless top, including a one-piece placket for center back,
balancing the side seams, and a couple different necklines. I hung out the
second load of laundry and then we did the crossword. I prototyped
flat-felled seams until I could reliably get the seamlines to match up.
Late dinner, brought in the laundry, folded it plus a forgotten load of
towels in the dryer from last week. By then it was after nine, so, bed.

I finished Foxglove Summer, which ended well despite a couple of false
alarms. The long arcs are still good, with the possible exception of his
love life. The hot-and-cold thing with Beverly is irritating. Does he
actually like her, or is he just floating by on whoever he can get to shag
him?
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
P away, family health

Yesterday I felled more of the back yoke seam, and had to switch to a
hemstitch to cover the end of the placket. Definitely leaving longer seam
allowances next time. I burned the oatmeal. Walked up to Forbes and Murdoch
to catch a 61B to clay; forgot my tools. Did call P while waiting for the
bus; that was nice. The bus driver was at the end of her shift, and drove
me an extra two blocks to drop me right in front of the library. Super
nice. Clay was good; I cleaned up the bottoms of all the bowls and put some
carved patterns into the slip. Dunked the mugs in a red/orange/turquoise
flashing slip; lost the requisite sacrificial handle (of course not the
goofy one); squished it back on real good and hoped for the best. Fixed P’s
mug whose handle had gone the same way. Afterwards, realized I’d forgotten
my phone is having trouble with data lately, and had to make do with
offline trip planning to figure out where to go to catch a bus home. Picked
the wrong side of the street, got on the wrong bus, waited too long to ask
the driver for clarification, and wound up waiting another half hour at the
North Braddock shopping center for the right one. Bought some chips and
turbinado. Debated whether to walk from Murdoch or take the shuttle home;
the timing was right for the shuttle so I stayed on to CMU. Chatted with
the shuttle driver for a bit on her break before learning she was actually
the A/B driver and the PTC departs Moorewood at the 15 on summer weekends.
Oof. Got on a 61C and walked home from the stairs.

Made chili for dinner, and a scoop of the pea-protein powder has been going
well in oatmeal so added some of that. Bad idea. The slight change in smell
threw me all the way off. Ate sunflower seeds and apple chips for dinner
instead. Flash is done, so started Legends. Dishes, no snack, sleep.

Moonlight continues excellent.

Update on G: his heart is not great, but that’s not unusual for the surgery
he’s had so they’ve got it covered. He’s in whatever is one step down from
ICU, which is noisy again so he’s not sleeping as much as he should. M goes
home today, and some other relatives are arriving to help.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I added some options for curved back hems, and started a version
of the front where the darts are folded into new seamlines. I finished
Raven again. I get now why it’s important whether they’re gnyxvat gb gur
Enira be gb n arj tbq (jvgu jubz gurl unir ab nterrzragf), ohg jul vf Rbyb
fb greevsvrq bs gur fgbar jura ur svaqf vg naq fb oynfr nobhg gur fanxr?

P’s throat tickle had developed into painful soreness, but the first
appointment he could get wasn’t for two weeks, so he went to urgentcare
just in case it was strep. It wasn’t; probably allergies.

At work I added a student to the nell cluster, noticed sudo was running
slow, and “fixed” it hard enough that now I can’t log in. Sent a very
contrite message to helpdesk. Spent the rest of the afternoon chasing theo
bugs and optimizations.

P had the car on campus, drove us home, immediately dinner, trash, then we
went to the pottery for the second meeting of the soda firing class. I
trimmed and handled four mugs (with compliments on my handles, ☺️), and
dipped four bowls in a blue/orange/brown flashing slip. Next time I’ll
carve patterns into the slip inside a stripe. Home, crossword, sleep.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I finished transferring marks and adjusting them on paper, then
transferred the new lines back to fabric and sewed it up. I screwed up the
dart, which has to get fixed first. There might also be a vertical
alignment issue at the side seam, and I might take it in at center front to
account for my posture.

Raven had an excellent denouement but just keeps going. I’m used to such
crap endings I forget Leckie is rather good at them.

We went to open studio and I made six mug handles and three soap dishes.
Everything was damper than I’d prefer for trimming, but I trimmed four
bowls anyhow, including one that someone must’ve fallen into that I turned
into a pouring lip. Afterwards we went to Target and exchanged the CO2
canister, and got magic coconut biscuits, moredifferent coconut biscuits
for P, trail mix, seltzer, cranberries, and almonds. Home, some kind of
meal, crossword. Dinner, scrabble (624), Flash, tiny snack, sleep.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I staystitched/thread-traced the armholes and side seam, sewed
the side seam and yoke seam, and tried it on. It’s gorgeous. The side seam
is a bit odd at the hip but I bet it will resolve when we do up the other
side. Raven Tower is getting easier to track as the first person singular
character develops. At work I found a pile of tests that weren’t passing
even though my commit messages claimed they were. No idea. Fixed them. No
meeting with T as he is still traveling. Home, quick dinner, then we went
to the first session of a soda firing class at the bathhouse pottery. The
instructor is a hoot, and showed some slides of firing results and wadding
basics before we all got stuck in making work. The woman next to me made a
double-rimmed bowl with fluting on the outer rim, which is going to be
spectacular. The clay was a little stiff for throwing for me, but I made a
variety of mug blanks. Home, snack, crossword, sleep. No trash; Memorial
Day was Monday.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I sewed the shoulder seams and inserted a sortof quick popover
placket so it can go over my head easily. I pinned up some bust darts to
the armhole and marked bust points.

We went to open studio and I made four smallish bowls and flubbed one.
Home, then I got stuck in a return/exchange for most of the thread crochet
supplies I ordered, since the mm sizes and recommended hook in the web
descriptions did not match the labels on what actually arrived. I’m keeping
the one hook and two threads that were as advertised, and throwing back the
rest for other brands that may be more accurate.

Unspecified meal, then P signed the CMU offer letter, called his folks to
tell them and check they’re okay (they’d caught a stomach flu going around
a few days ago) (they’re out of the woods now; G was fixing the
dishwasher). I made rhubarb sauce and caramelized a few spare slices in
honey, then called my folks to tell them P’s news and talk about gardening.
Crossword, then I had a snack while P had salad dinner, then we attempted
to sign up for the soda firing class at the bathhouse pottery starting
Wednesday, but the website said sold out. Sent an email to check just in
case, since the website also said it was both free and not-free. She-Ra,
snack, sleep.

Yesterday I finished preparing the rayon for washing. We went to open
studio and collected glazed work. I had four small bowls, one crazed; two
mugs, one ran onto the shelf and the other was the overbisqued long shot
and didn’t really work out. I glazed five flower pots of various sizes, a
drip tray, and a bud vase.

On the way home we did errands at the waterfront. Lowe’s for ant traps and
a trash can, Target for bunny snacks, work seltzer, cello tape, hanging
file folders, a new kind of biscuit I’d like to try, and milk for P.

At home I did a turn through the garden and weeded the flat area inside the
gate. I picked three small asparagus and turned them into a late afternoon
meal. I made another batch of Katie treats, this time measuring more
carefully (2.5c puffs, 1/3c syrup, 1/3c maple almond butter, 6T protein
powder, syrup to 220F) and it ended up a bit dry again. Late dinner,
crossword, Flash, snack, sleep. I have tried the weird Italian anise
toothpaste (Marvis) and found it acceptable, though I wish it were more
anise and less mint.

Ugh dreams

shopping, birdsong, tv

Yesterday was hard. I need to pnyy zl zbz be zl tenaqzbgure and can’t seem
to do it and it’s exhausting. Normally routine helps. It’s not.

I woke up early, like by an hour. I sewed the snap on menstrual pad number
three, cut out a waistband for the languishing pair of my pj pants and
sewed it together, sewed one edge to the pants, and started whip-stitching
the other edge down. We went to open studio and I glazed three mugs and
four small bowls. Lunch. I put together an amazon order for apple chips. I
made a batch of almond butter puffed millet squares, this time with brown
rice syrup instead of maple, and earth balance instead of avocado oil. I
played an awful lot of a deckbuilding word game called Paperback. I spent
some time outside looking at the herb garden. Dinner, crossword, Flash,
snack, sleep.

Yesterday I finished felling the crotch seam, did up a topstitched hem, and
delivered P’s pj pants with much pride and excitement. They were extremely
well received. I also finished the pile of shelf liners and installed them
in the linen closet.

We went to open studio and I trimmed three bowls, three flower pots, and a
bud vase. Everything is now on the drying shelf for bisquing and I’ve
nothing else under plastic. We got our whistles back; a pierogi and a bird
for me, and two potatoes for P. On the way home we went to Target for a new
shower curtain rod, matching rings, and snacks. P was fading fast so went
through geagle with a list while I stood in line. It worked out perfectly,
since by the time I realized I didn’t know where the car was and went to
wait out front, he’d made it through checkout.

Home, midafternoon meal, I washed the shower curtain with a buncha towels,
then the rest of the towels in the hamper, a late dinner, crossword, sleep.

[food] Earlier this week I’d cycled in some frozen butternut squash into my
usual rice+stuff stew thing and found it extremely bland, so I tried again.
This time I used double spices (coriander cumin turmeric) plus cinnamon,
fenugreek, a touch of chipotle, palm sugar, and almond butter. Absolute win.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I had P measure how much elastic he’d need for the waistband,
then I prototyped sewing a short length of elastic to a spare scrap to
figure out how much draw-in would be lost to the stitching (5%), and
adjusted the waist elastic length accordingly. I sewed the elastic to the
pants, and started tacking down the foldover bit. Had to restart that after
I got it crooked the first time, but I think I’ve figured out my method now.

Mom called with an update on how everyone is doing. Grandma is not great.
The timing of his death versus an unusually infirm and unusually busy week
of hers is a difficult thing. Aunt S is not great. She was the first family
member to arrive. Mom is okay so long as she doesn’t focus on it too
intensely. Dad is okay. Grandpa will be cremated, with a memorial reception
sometime in May.

We went to the Braddock library for their 120th birthday celebration/open
house to be demonstrators in the pottery studio. P was a bit overwhelmed by
teaching mode to start, but got into it with practice and really connected
with several groups of people of all ages. I was mostly a silent visual
demo, though I did steal P’s patter for one couple while he was taking a
break and exploring the old pool upstairs. Over two hours I made two medium
flower pots, one tiny flower pot (more probably for a succulent), a small
bowl, a medium-large bowl, and a bud vase. I’d wound up with the wheel with
permanently affixed bat pins, so I threw on a bat for the first time.
Centering was a beast. Next time I’ll be sure to throw a full-width bat pad
first. I was nevertheless able to compensate by throwing off the hump;
pretty proud of that.

Civil finally has Miles doing was would have worked if he’d tried it in the
first place; just being the reasonably good person that he is, in her
general vicinity. Why he’s so reluctant to talk to Cordelia about this
stuff, or even just the professora, is beyond me. I mean, misogyny. Sure,
fine.

The grow light for the seedlings and/or the timer has pooped out, so we did
some research on switching to LEDs. P drilled down further and found a
winner which will support the adult plants we keep through the winter as
well as not polluting the audio space with fan noise, nor burning the house
down, nor making P’s mornings disturbingly purple (he sits next to them for
coffee time).

The direct flight to Seattle on Alaska is perfect, but the flight home is
too early for Katies. The alternatives all route through ORD, which is
suboptimal. We’ll probably need a mixed-airline solution.

Dinner, crossword, supper, Flash.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I made myself a leather thimble out of a busted pair of old
gardening gloves, and designed, cut out, and sewed a pocket for P’s pants.
We went to the ocarina workshop at the Braddock pottery and I made a bird
whistle and a pierogi whistle. On the way home we stopped at bed bath &
beyond to pick up the new vacuum cleaner and look for cutting boards,
storage bins to go in the end tables and coffee tables, and coasters/padded
placemats. They were out of the largest size cutting board P was hoping
for, we decided we needed to think about what we’d be storing in the bins,
and the placemats we liked were not machine-washable. Boo. Well, we can
make some. Still got a new vacuum though.

Komarr is a nice puzzle, but despite there being way more women around on
this planet it still seems to be difficult to find two of them in the same
room at the same time. 1998.

P did about four loads of laundry and a bunch of grading. Dinner,
crossword, Flash, snack, sleep.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I waxed and pressed a bunch of lengths of thread, then
flat-felled two seams while watching Bernadette Banner on YouTube. Slight
crush; she’s delightful.

We went to open studio and I flubbed three bud vases before giving up and
trimming my slightly-too-wet work from last week instead. The flower pots
are great; we’ll see about the trays.

Late lunch, saw C off to his new digs, dinner, P very kindly fixed a clog
in the third floor toilet so I didn’t have to, crossword, vacuum cleaner
research (there’s now a Shark RV370 on hold for us at BB&B), a new-to-me
show called Money For Nothing, bed. I overspiced dinner and spent the
evening pretty fragile.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I tried four different ways of drafting the back pants pattern
before realizing the reason things were weird was that the back width
didn’t match the front width, so pivoting at the side seam was causing the
grain line to do alarming things between the waist and thigh. I pivoted at
the grain line instead, drew a new center back line to make the back waist
symmetrical, and suddenly everything made much more sense. I traced off
copies on tissue, extended the hip width up to the waist for pull-on pants,
and added seam allowances. Ready for a wearable test pair in flannel.

Mirror Dance continues apace. Bless Cordelia.

We went to open studio and I made two flower pots with matching drainage
trays, flubbed one with too thin a bottom, and trimmed a bowl left over
from whenever we last went that had surprisingly not gone too far past
leather-hard. On the way home we went to Target for bunny snacks and I
picked up a bag of dried salted edamame to try.

Home, lunch after 2. I wound up having a snack around 5 so dinner wasn’t
until 7. It worked out okay though. Crossword, QE, appropriately-sized
snack, bed.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I sewed the side seams using french seams, which has worked
beautifully. We went to open studio and I trimmed and handled the remaining
mug, then threw a medium bowl. Directly home, lunch, and then I cleaned out
the nest. One large bag of trash, one large bag of donations, and probably
three loads of pending laundry. There had been mouse activity in a craft
box and in the large cardboard box the range hood came in, but it’s all way
more than quarantine old, so a thorough vacuuming was sufficient.

Dinner, crossword, and then the internet tuckered out halfway through an
episode of Heart, so I played bubbles until sleep time.
