Yesterday I overslept, and put the morning into work stuff. We’d forgotten
to run the dishwasher so I did that too. My tailoring supplies shipment
arrived, with fancy buttons for shirts, finer thread, finer needles, zips
for the couch cushion covers, etc. Lunch, then I got word the server
rebuild was done, so I started the configuration process for that. I met
with some high school interns for an hour to tell them about my job; that
was pretty cool. F came by to get help on installing a python package from
source on her Mac, that turned out to not be identifying her OS version
properly. There is something fishy with her gcc too, though that takes ages
to upgrade whether you get it from homebrew or Xcode so we broke for the
day. Home, dinner, trash, then the final soda fire class at the Braddock
pottery. Had a cluster of small panic attacks on the way there that were
probably due to the heat plus eating so close to a drive. Once I got
underground, things were fine. Decided on splatters of glazes, including
spodumene, gold shino, and white liner. The white in particular should look
great against the electric blue flashing slip.

Home, dishes x2, crossword, sleep.

G update: the tube is out! They want to take him off the IV heart meds and
onto oral ones, so he had his first sip of water in a while. Success! Very
good news.

Yesterday I wrote up notes on the finished prototype shirt for the changes
I want to make in the next one; mostly construction and seam finishing but
I also want to try a one-piece placket at center back.

P came in on the shuttle with me and we had lunch together, then he went
off to clean out his locker at the gym. I spent the afternoon doing a
pytorch tutorial, then fixed a bug in how deletions are handled, which
passed a bunch of unit test modules. Not all of them, but, progress. I went
to a meeting with F and M, and contributed some of the sample programs from
the ProPPR repository as possible sources of training data. We need a huge
pile of proof traces from logic programs with semantically-meaningful
predicate and atom names. Ideally it would be a pile of different programs,
but the top_X ones we built for ProPPR are huge enough to generate
thousands of proofs each. That will work, but we risk overfitting to that
particular naming style, which is unlikely to match what we’ll be using in
LIA.

I walked home through the park and listened to Foxglove Summer (extremely
great if a little heavy on the foreshadowing). Once home, sat for a bit,
then made dinner. P made pizza. Being back in proper routine again is a
major comfort. P took a call from his mom while I did dishes, then we did
the crossword, and played a module and a half of the new The Room
installment. CW uncontrolled fire in this one.

Snack, sleep. I dreamt of whistling at hummingbirds, exploring old
buildings, and parties at my french teacher’s house learning constructed
languages.

G update: he’s doing way better! Also D inquired around the neighborhood
about teens that might want to pick up some extra cash mowing their lawn
this summer, and it turned out all the neighbors had already worked out
like a whole schedule whereby they’d take turns making it happen. New
England.

Yesterday I sewed the buttonholes and buttons. Looks great! Need to wash
out the chalk and then it’s ready to wear. I finished reading Broken Homes
and started Foxglove Summer. At work I fixed a bug caused by mixing hasattr
and [personal profile] property; don’t do that. More bugs remain, but I made an intermediate
commit anyway. Home, picked a pile of blackcurrants. Totally forgot we’d
planned to go to clay, but P was knackered from downtown adventures at the
DMV, so it worked out. We’ll do clay on Saturday. Dinner, crossword,
Legends, sleep.

G update: he was awake enough to talk to D and remember a ten-digit account
number off the top of his head, so, success!

Yesterday I sewed the first edge of bias tape to one of the armholes, after
several false starts. I called P to chat and get the usual update; he’ll be
coming home today as scheduled to deal with his drivers license and, like,
actually rest and get some contiguous focus time in on his fall courses. At
work I fixed the temporary nodes issue in pytheo, and moved on to the LIA
tests. Home, then I did a turn through the garden and picked snow peas and
blackcurrants, weeded a bit, and cleared the current flush of comfrey out
of the radish bed. I had a nice chat with the neighbor about edible,
horticultural, and medicinal plants, and the relative virtues of growing up
in the country versus just reading a lot. For dinner I sautéed a quarter of
the cabbage with peppers and parsley, then proceeded to not put any of it
in my more Katie-sized stir fry of asparagus and snow peas. Legends, snack,
sleep.

G news: he will probably do out the rest of the week in the hospital to get
his cardiac symptoms under control, but is sleeping better.

Yesterday I finished the hems and tacked down the squirrely bits at the
transition to the side seams. At work I located an issue with how inferred
but uncached slots are handled (namely they’re being stored in the database
when they shouldn’t be) and started a refactor to maybe fix it. Home, and
my exchange from Herrschner’s had finally arrived, with the correct size
hooks and threads. Dinner, Legends (with some atrocious acting and/or
writing, wtf), finished the crochet sample, started fooling around with the
smaller hooks and threads. Snack, sleep. Whispers Underground continues
well.

G is starting to get more rest, and the repairs to his GI tract seem to be
working. Hopefully means he can go home soon!

Yesterday I figured out edgestitching (still need practice, particularly on
corners) and finished the plackets. At work I figured out the issue with
the differences between the LIA and raw pytheo tests was that LIA was using
batch mode and I wasn’t testing that in pytheo yet. Adding that test made
things substantially easier. More bugs remain; I suspect inference caching
isn’t working right.

Midnight Riot is more gruesome and misogynist than I remember, but remains
entertaining.

Home, and the Amish hairpins had arrived, so I put my hair up in a French
twist with them and am extremely impressed— only four pins and it was
secure to vigorous movement, and over the evening nothing dug at my scalp
the way a spring-claw tends to. Highly recommend.

Dinner, chatted with P (G is out of the ICU, has seen the GI, will go in
for lapro surgery in the next few days to make it so he can eat, hopefully
coming home to recover before P is scheduled to depart next Wednesday),
Flash, snack, sleep.

cooking

Yesterday I washed the test fabrics and hung them out on the line, did the
laundry and same. At least two are a touch off-grain. P taught a tools
workshop at the teaching garden. I picked a dehydrator-full of oregano and
set it to dry, though it seems pretty weak so we’ll see if it’s worth
keeping. I trued the ends of the two good fabrics in the package and set
them aside to wash another day. I worked two rows on the crochet edging
prototype. Set some blackeyed peas to soak. Crossword after lunch, Flash
after dinner. Finished Magic For Liars, which had an excellent climax and a
great twist that had almost nothing to do with the guilty foreshadowing of
the title, introduction, or even the wrap-up. They would have been better
off as two different books.

News on G: last time he talked to P, he apparently hadn’t been told yet
about the mass on his pancreas. Well, he knows now. The word on what’s next
has improved somewhat; they can do the biopsy in as little as 7 days,
though they still have to wait 3 months to do anything about it. Still will
be good to have more information sooner. M is there and going home today or
tomorrow; P will fly out Wednesday to stay for a week. M has been taking
care of everyday ephemera so D doesn’t have to. The Subaru has been checked
out and is fine. The house is stocked with good healthy food.
