Yesterday I wrote up and posted getting started information for all the Fellows for their first day, went to the team leads meeting where we discussed a possible collaboration with COVID Act Now on their test positivity scraper system, and kicked off the back issue ingestion for the new HSP signal. I went to a doctors appointment for my usual seasonal medication adjustment and also got a flu shot, and let me tell you that is the first building I’ve been inside other than my house since March, and boy was it spooky. Afterwards, met with B to coordinate Fellows onboarding, did some hiring paperwork, made a plan with A for public release of the new Wave 4 survey signals, and discussed with D how to navigate his dual identities as Delphi founder/admin and Fellow contributor.

Dinner, crossword, Umbrella Academy and sewing (I’m hemming some crinkly linen towels), snack, sleep. Dreamt of designing spacecraft, secret engineering societies, locked room puzzles, and virgin mojitos.

Yesterday I finished disassembling the attachments on the rear of the machine, and started in on the head and bobbin area. There are a couple stuck screws and joints, and I’m using sewing machine oil as a gentle penetrating oil to start. Building up an order for parts and supplies, including a more serious penetrating oil called liquid wrench, a new rubber friction pulley for the motor drive wheel, a new rubber friction pulley for the bobbin winder, an LED replacement lamp, and some updated cabling. My goal for this repair is similar to how I treat my antique spinning wheels: not a purely faithful restoration but to bring it back into workhorse order. Learned a new word: rheostat.

I went to a doctors appointment after lunch for a meds follow up, which went fine (don’t touch your face). When we got back, I helped P debug and verify his remote teaching setup, then went back to the White.

Major bummer: while locating the house micrometer, we discovered the drain in the basement has been backing up the whole house sewage line. P cleaned up the affected area, but basically no flushing toilets or other large waste water usage is allowed until we get a plumber out; still waiting for a callback on that. Bad timing.

COVID-19 update: spring carnival is cancelled, club events are cancelled, cmu library due dates and fines are also cancelled. MLD is completing its current round of faculty interviews remotely. We haven’t been directed to wfh yet, which seems short-sighted, but I plan to arrange that with T. If we end up on campus today I’ll be picking up my spare keyboard. Olin students have, endearingly, staged a faux-mencement before everyone is sent home next week, with academic regalia cobbled together from trash bags and campus clutter. It’s a good place.

Dinner, crossword, DS9, snack, sleep. Dreams were an exercise in gross dude-appeasing dubious consent in a variety of (thankfully platonic) contexts. Do not recommend.

Yesterday I finished the pattern adjustments, then laid out, traced, and cut out the second chair back pieces. I finished Divided Allegiance (can we have ONE BOOK in this series without a sexual assault, please) and started Oath of Gold. I ironed a linen remnant and traced out a grid for sleep sachets. I went to my doctors appointment, even though my Zoloft refill arrived (fast!) already with the intended new dosage. A nice surprise. Anyway everything is very typical for me health wise. Not ideal, but typical for the time of year. Things will start getting better again in February. Worked on thread-tracing the grid in the waiting room, as the chalk will rub off soon enough.

P walked home after work, and I hung out with him and did more stitching while he decompressed. Dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep.

Olin trans update: better but not yet good. Not transphobic per se, but a failure to understand the fragility of the space:

Yesterday I redrafted the pants pattern for P. The front is good, but I
think the pivot point is off for the back. I didn’t mark a full-hip line
when he tried them on even though I know the waist moved substantially, so
it makes sense I’d need to drop it.

Mirror Dance has a TW for sexual assault, and also for disordered eating.
It’s a bit of an abrupt departure from Brothers in Arms, where they were
obviously of equal intelligence and frontability. It’s difficult to believe
that Mark would have made so many extreme tactical oversights when in
theory he was supposed to have had the same/apparently-same military
training as Miles. The response to trauma and bad field leadership all
feels natural, as does the stunted emotional maturity, but geez. Basic
competence whiplash.

I had the day off, and mostly took things easy. P drove me to the
substitute doctors office for my physical at 2. I should be taking more
calcium, walking to or from work most days, and doing some kind of weighted
exercise. I also need to file living will instructions.

While I was in, P had an Edgewood adventure, finding a coffee place and a
french bakery, and a bunch of one way streets. Not an easy place to get
around, Edgewood.

Home, very early dinner, crossword, Flash, snack, and then it was still
early but Flash was trending more toward body horror than I really prefer,
so I started season three of queer eye. Great show for helping you believe
in the world.

Another snack, went a bit overboard, mild panic attack, sleep.
