Yesterday I made another batch of nut and seed bars, sewed the side seams of P’s pj pants as French seams, made a couple of pockets, and started inserting them. I finished reading Rise of the Dragons (short; ended quite abruptly) and started Imager by L. E. Modesitt, which is... well. It can’t decide if it’s a character story about an artist son of a merchant family, an idea story about being able to manifest imagination into reality, or a milieu story about an alternate 16th-18th? century France (guilds are a Big Thing) with stronger Roman influences and where the abrahamic religions never happened. Each scene is densely treated, and the next scene skips ahead years at a time to help keep the story moving. Persians are vilified for some unknown reason. I normally don’t have the patience for writing like that, but I want to see what happens to the main character when he figures his stuff out. We’ll see.

P handled the laundry, and we made pastry for more currant bars during a break in the afternoon. Didn’t actually make the bars, but, baby steps. It’ll keep in the freezer indefinitely.

Dinner, crossword, Voyager, snack, sleep.

Yesterday I was off from work. I organized all the cabbage and remnants of the purple canvas, and cleared out a languishing bin of Olin stuff to store it in. I cut out pattern pieces for another pair of maximum cozy pj pants for P, after some modifications for an attached waistband and cuffs to make up for short yardage. After lunch P took some things in to his new office and I made dough for some currant-layered cookies from his youth. After chilling it he came home and we rolled, stuffed, sugared, and cut them out together; it’s been a while since we collaborated so closely on a baked good together. Fun. For dinner we made tacos, though I seem to still be hounded by the memory of overeating them so it may be wise to give them a rest for a while. Crossword, then I watched a couple episodes of a British interior design show a la GBBO. It was lovely and guaranteed to have nothing to do with food or illness. Sleep. Dreamt of high school computers, and a particular cocky dude from back then having trouble resetting his github password, which I helped him fix in the sketchiest plaintext way possible.

Yesterday I baked the nut and seed bars. I sewed and felled the piecing in the back panel, basted the zip panel, and sewed the zip to the seam allowances. I finished Crown of Renewal (nicely concluded) and switched to podcasts. At work I did some reading on Inform7’s design, trying to zero in on how the program text is parsed, as opposed to how gameplay is parsed. Tricky to google, but I located Nelson’s 2006 whitepaper and his talk at this year’s NarraScope. I wound up down a rabbit hole about GOAL, a language for cognitive agents developed by a lab in Delft.

Home, and P had a late meeting on campus, which tends to accelerate my evening schedule. Dinner, P got home, we watched some things together, then did dishes and trash and crossword. Elementary, snack, maybe too much snack, some quality chatting time, sleep.

Yesterday I sewed the lap, trimmed the zipper, accidentally slid the zipper pull all the way off, fixed it, sewed and felled the side panels, and sewed and felled the top and bottom panels. Echoes of Betrayal is good so far; I love the druids of this universe. It’s all very D&D fanfic.

At work I fixed a serialization issue with teaching sessions, passed all tests (having to fix it again, but better this time), and pushed to trunk and prod. Alas something is still broken with B’s bug report, so I’m not done yet. While tests were running I picked up an old helpdesk ticket J abandoned and E has checked in on. To get ahead of the obvious next step I implemented the dubious fix J recommended weeks ago but never confirmed. We’ll see if it sticks.

Walked home through the woods, partway with P ❤️. Didn’t realize how much I’ve missed that. A shortage of gorgeous fall days.

The replacement OXO dishes arrived in excellent packaging, like one of those lattice-cutting rolling pins they use for pie crusts was applied to paper.

Dinner, crossword, Elementary, snack, sleep. Dreamt CG was an instructor for a learning-to-bungie-jump class I was taking for the harness experience. Also Entropy was involved in some kind of strange stolen goods laundering. Yo-yos and such.

Yesterday I sewed the front yoke on the black shirt. I did the laundry and hung it out on the line. I did a bit of mixing in the reclaim bucket. We went to the farmers market and got nectarines (too late for blueberries), peaches, beans, a small globe eggplant , parsley, basil, tomato, cucumber, green onions, eggs, and a sourdough cookie, scone, and peach frangipane. On the way home we stopped at Pigeon Bagels and the art store. A nice treat to make up for getting out so late. There are some wooden print blocks that might make good texture tools for clay; I’m letting them marinate in my head a bit.

Home, lunch, then I made more nut and seed bars, with measurements this time. While they were baking I roasted the eggplant on the gas burner. Storm and Fury revealed one of its big secrets. Hung out with P in bed with our respective hand-sewing projects. I finished the last hem on the burgundy floral, and he finished the straps on his bike bag. Dinner, crossword, episode 2 of Gentleman Jack. The use of the fourth wall will probably grow on me but I’m not there yet.

Snack, sleep. Had a great deal of trouble shedding heat for some reason.
