Yesterday I finished the back yoke seam, felled the side seams, tested out
a few approaches to a rolled hem, and hemmed the back. I’m using a 4mm
rolled-hem foot, staystitching in the hem allowance. It’s not magic but it
seems to work out okay if you pay attention and go slow. For future
iterations I’ll probably hem them before doing up the side seams.

I went to the farmers market and got asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage,
shishito peppers, parsley, and coriander, and a sourdough salted dark
chocolate cookie.

Home, cut the cauliflower into planks, roasted in the oven for a half hour
at 375, flipping once. Had brie and sesame crackers for lunch. Did laundry;
clothes and towels. Surreal folding a load of only my clothes. Cleared off
the back porch in prep for the masonry guys tomorrow. Found a bunch of olla
demos and red clay, an abandoned mouse nest, a much more pleasant and very
cozy abandoned nuthatch nest, trashed a bunch of stuff. Don’t let me clean
your place exhausted unless you’re interested in a more Buddhist way of
life. Cookie for snack; was really pleased with past-me for that.

P called; I made dinner out of Priya’s new book, sorta, worked out well.
Mustard seeds and curry leaves, turmeric, ground coriander seed, and winter
squash was the base, but I added red lentils for protein, chopped prunes to
replace the caramelized onions, and some of the roasted cauliflower. Enough
leftovers for a couple lunches.

Finished Moon Over Soho and started Whispers Under Ground. He’s getting
better at writing women.

G update: everybody’s tired. He’s off the opiates, which is good, but still
coughing, which hurts, not so good. T and M just came up for the afternoon,
not to stay. Some of D’s folks might come up later this week to help.

Yesterday I trued the ends of a gaudy Hawaiian print I intend to use for
practice, a whisper-thin white fabric I suspect is not actually rayon, and
started a black. I started reading Magic For Liars, which is a bit
melodramatic but has some compelling character interactions I want to see
play out. At work I got all tests working in theo, and started in on the
LIA tests. P received the locksmith in the afternoon, who replaced the
mechanism entire with a surprisingly identical new one. I did a turn
through the garden and picked snow peas and a few herbs. Dinner (mushrooms
carrots snow peas lima beans rice herbs cranberries), crossword, Flash,
snack, sleep. G is awake, and annoyed.

Yesterday I traced off the front and back from the prototype. Next is
deciding whether to use the last of the slightly-off-grain plaid to test it
out or switch to one of the lawns. Raven is almost done. Our masonry guys
came to look at the bricks over the rest of the house and gave a quote
around 28k. Initially that seemed super high, but it checks out with the
work they did for us before and the size of that job, plus they’ll be
repairing the chimneys and re-lining the furnace flue. I can foot it, but
it will leave less left over for the back patio, which also needs some
attention.

I made an amazing chili for lunch, usual spices plus a pile of cilantro
(stems included) and parsley. Ate with C and discussed M’s axolotl and home
repair. At work I dug into a theo modification to set the names of items to
the full path instead of just the local slotname. This makes fetch() easier
but has caused a bug where I’m getting single items back instead of group
ones. Walked in to campus from dinosaur park. Ate my snack on the winter
garden steps. It was a nice day to be outside. Home, sat for a bit, lost
all impetus. Dinner, crossword, Flash, snack, sleep.

Yesterday P helped pin the other bust dart and side seam. At work I figured
out how to log what database queries were being run, and it turns out using
ORM objects was generating a huge pile of extra individual queries. I
stopped that, and query time dropped to 0.04 seconds. Nice. I went to a
meeting with F and her new summer intern M, whose project will be to
integrate an external neural prolog / soft unification system (sPyrolog)
with F’s common-sense reasoning module.

It was gorgeous outside and the next shuttle wasn’t for 45 minutes so I
walked home through the park. 🍃P met me at the trail exit for the final
leg. My speed is pretty slow, so the shuttle passed us on Schenley Drive,
but that’s fine.

Dinner, crossword, and then we spent a little bit organizing some house
maintenance work that’s growing overdue and figuring out what we have the
budget for this year. The flue and brick repointing are probably top
priority, followed by the back patio, and then the ground floor windows.
The roof is coming, but probably not this year. Haven’t done the math yet
to figure out what we pay cash for vs getting a home equity loan. I tend to
keep too much liquidity around.

Flash, snack, sleep. Raven Tower is faaaaaabulous but completely spoilery
and I’ll definitely be going directly from the last page back to the first
to reread it.

Dreamt of church, socks, antique sales, roasting potatoes in the ashes of a
wood fire, camping, stargazing, fireworks, getting lost with friends.

Yesterday P taught an irrigation workshop at the etg, got some groceries at
the coop, came home for lunch, then went to see several of his students
walk at graduation. He got a mention in one of the student speeches; very
sweet.

I trued the ends of a linen/rayon/elastane crepe, prepped for washing,
washed it and the rest of the stack of fabric on hot, and hung everything
to dry on the line. The new presser feet arrived, and I practiced on some
scraps of flannel (difficult) and linen (easy). I will need more practice,
particularly on the starts of seams, but the potential for perfect
flat-felled seams is clearly visible. I finished Our Lady.

For lunch I made smiley tots and a quick red lentil, carrots, squash, and
peas thing with turmeric and coriander to go with. It was essentially
deconstructed samosas; definitely doing that again.

After lunch I made Katie snacks (2c puffs, 6T protein powder, shake
cinnamon; 1/2c syrup, slightly less butter, 220F, 1/2c almond butter) and I
have a good feeling about their structural integrity. New chocolate
topping; a vegan 67% from Honduras, with rum. Low acid, high nutty/roasted.

Afterwards I took in the fabric, ironed some of the corners that had become
twisted in the wind, and partially straightened the grain on one of the
bits of lawn that seems to have suffered stress from being on a bolt maybe?
Wonky in the middle anyway.

A shelf I’d ordered to go in the shower arrived, but didn’t stay up. Boo.
I’ve washed it more thoroughly and we’ll see if that helps.

I cut out a pair of lightweight sleep shorts for P, and made sketches for a
summer vest and herringbone pants for me.

Dinner, crossword, Flash, snack, sleep. I’m back on my daily flossing habit.

Wretched dreams of bad wheelchair access in buses, pulling the stop cord
only to get teleported to the middle of a busy intersection, networks of
freeways hostile to pedestrians, poor signage, sprawling malls and
convention halls.

Yesterday I started sewing in the second pocket on the sturdier pair of P’s
pj pants. Hallowed continues with extremely low density. I don’t know how
she makes ~werewolves low-stakes, but she does. I looked for the artwork I
did about gardening with grandpa but only found the studies in my old
sketchbook. I think the final must have been larger format, which means
it’s either in a portfolio somewhere or folded up in a binder.

At work I looked at the second round of fixes for the config package, and
whaddya know, it works! Good job, maintainer guy. B had sent out a draft of
his senior thesis, and I marked it up for him. I went to therapy and made a
connection between my general good mood and suspiciously good appetite and
the unusual levels of capsaicin I’ve been eating. Endorphins don’t joke.
Also, sunshine. Spent the rest of the afternoon trying a few ways that
didn’t work to fix the python version issues with wsgi.

Home, unpacked the new bowls, did the crossword with P, sent P off to class
and discovered the plates had arrived in the meantime. The plates fit great
in the dishwasher but the bowls don’t (though that’s no worse that our
current bowls so). Dinner, Flash, P came home ebullient— his students are
going to knock the client’s socks off. Decompressed with P, snack, sleep.

Yesterday I finished reassembling the pocket. I stripped our bedding and P
helped flip the mattress. I did not put the new linen sheets on the bed,
since it’s still been chill nights. Banking on remembering to do that
between now and July when it gets hot. I finished the pink petals on
Gerty’s embroidery project, and started the purple ones. I did two loads of
sheets and towels and one load of socks and silks. Mom called at lunch to
get updates on travel plans. We’ll be staying at a nice place near my
grandmother, with mom and T for the two memorial days and then just us the
rest of the week. It’s walking distance from everywhere, which is good. P
is worried about being able to get all his grading done, since there won’t
be enough time between when we get back and when they’re due. Hopefully
I’ll be able to help him balance between hanging out with gma and holing up
in the room or a coffee shop marking.

Hallowed has, hopefully briefly, become an excuse to data dump the author’s
worldbuilding notebook. I’m not really a fan of milieu stories so we’ll see
if I manage to slog through it.

No Flash; too busy figuring out hotel and car rental. Have started maybe
daydreaming about sewing some loose summer tops though.

Yesterday I finished the hems on four handkerchiefs and wrote up my process
in my design book. I finally unpacked the spare small plates and bowls and
put them through the washer; we’d been down to three bowls and two
minimally crazed plates for months. After lunch we did the crossword, and
then I made another batch of Katie treats. This time I grated some dark
chocolate over the top while they were still hot, which seems to have
worked. “Recipe” such as it is, to fill a 1 1/2c glass container: 1/4 c
rice syrup, somewhat less butter, melt in a pan. 1 1/4 cup puffed whatever
(millet is nice) in a bowl ready to hand, with 3T protein powder (I use
Unjury unflavored, which is nice but does strange things to mixtures so
ymmv). Line container with parchment. Stir melted mixture until emulsified,
then add 3-4T nut butter and stir just until streaks are evenly
distributed. Working quickly, dump pan contents on dry ingredients,
stir/chop with a spatula until everybody’s coated, then press lightly into
container with spatula. Compress tightly with the bottom of a measuring
cup.

You can sub maple syrup but it will need more boiling to thicken. You can
sub corn syrup but it’ll be sweeter and you can’t really reduce the amount
as the sugar is structural in this application. Same with honey. A pinch of
salt is fine but I find I like it better without.

After treats I cleared the packing materials and mail trash off the dining
room table, then made a deep dive into vintage stoneware internet to see
about finding some plates and bowls that might last a little longer. With
P’s input decided on Dansk “brown mist” plates, and Noritake “painted
desert” bowls since the dansk cereal bowls are goofy and the non-goofy
salad bowls are rare and expensive. We’ll be eclectic, it’ll be lovely.

Dinner, Monday’s crossword, Money For Nothing. Body was extremely confused
about whether it wanted food or not-food so I wound up with a fragile
evening.

Yesterday I cut out another pair of pj pants for P, out of the thinner
flannel. I sewed and machine-felled the inseams and crotch seam, added
pockets, and sewed the side seams. Alliance has gone a bit weird, but I’m
enjoying Simon’s chance to be a bit sly. When P got back from his morning
walk we set up the new shower curtain rod and rings and put the curtain
back up. It is good. After lunch we did the crossword and then went out to
the garden. I moved the comfrey patch to the back corner, dug out all the
volunteers to join it, and P moved a load of dirt to fill in the hole. We
stripped last year’s vines and ties off the trellises, and cleared away the
dead stems of arugula, basil, and nightshades. There was a huge flush of
cressweed, grass, and dandelions all over the first bed and a bit in the
second. Once weeded I planted snow peas in both beds along the north line
and called it good. Shower, snack, phone games, dinner, crossword, Flash,
snack, sleep.

Yesterday I finished felling the crotch seam, did up a topstitched hem, and
delivered P’s pj pants with much pride and excitement. They were extremely
well received. I also finished the pile of shelf liners and installed them
in the linen closet.

We went to open studio and I trimmed three bowls, three flower pots, and a
bud vase. Everything is now on the drying shelf for bisquing and I’ve
nothing else under plastic. We got our whistles back; a pierogi and a bird
for me, and two potatoes for P. On the way home we went to Target for a new
shower curtain rod, matching rings, and snacks. P was fading fast so went
through geagle with a list while I stood in line. It worked out perfectly,
since by the time I realized I didn’t know where the car was and went to
wait out front, he’d made it through checkout.

Home, midafternoon meal, I washed the shower curtain with a buncha towels,
then the rest of the towels in the hamper, a late dinner, crossword, sleep.

[food] Earlier this week I’d cycled in some frozen butternut squash into my
usual rice+stuff stew thing and found it extremely bland, so I tried again.
This time I used double spices (coriander cumin turmeric) plus cinnamon,
fenugreek, a touch of chipotle, palm sugar, and almond butter. Absolute win.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I made myself a leather thimble out of a busted pair of old
gardening gloves, and designed, cut out, and sewed a pocket for P’s pants.
We went to the ocarina workshop at the Braddock pottery and I made a bird
whistle and a pierogi whistle. On the way home we stopped at bed bath &
beyond to pick up the new vacuum cleaner and look for cutting boards,
storage bins to go in the end tables and coffee tables, and coasters/padded
placemats. They were out of the largest size cutting board P was hoping
for, we decided we needed to think about what we’d be storing in the bins,
and the placemats we liked were not machine-washable. Boo. Well, we can
make some. Still got a new vacuum though.

Komarr is a nice puzzle, but despite there being way more women around on
this planet it still seems to be difficult to find two of them in the same
room at the same time. 1998.

P did about four loads of laundry and a bunch of grading. Dinner,
crossword, Flash, snack, sleep.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I waxed and pressed a bunch of lengths of thread, then
flat-felled two seams while watching Bernadette Banner on YouTube. Slight
crush; she’s delightful.

We went to open studio and I flubbed three bud vases before giving up and
trimming my slightly-too-wet work from last week instead. The flower pots
are great; we’ll see about the trays.

Late lunch, saw C off to his new digs, dinner, P very kindly fixed a clog
in the third floor toilet so I didn’t have to, crossword, vacuum cleaner
research (there’s now a Shark RV370 on hold for us at BB&B), a new-to-me
show called Money For Nothing, bed. I overspiced dinner and spent the
evening pretty fragile.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I transferred marks on the front, and made a bunch of
measurements in prep to re-draft the pattern so I can get the skew out of
them.

[food, health] I made a baked potato for lunch, which turned out poorly. The
skin was sour, a familiar thing I’ve hated about farmers market potatoes in
the past. The similarity is suspicious. Maybe a solanine thing? Anyway it
made me unsteady all afternoon, at the barely detectable edge of crampy. No
snacks.

At work I filled out a bunch of the parse rules sections of the paper, and
made field arrays work, though not particularly gracefully.

Home, dinner, P put together another table, trash, crossword, Flash, sleep.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I transferred markings for the back pattern piece, which
elucidated why it was binding a bit at the back calf; everything is
narrower at the side seam and practically vertical from the knee down.
Contemplating whether/how to adjust the centerline so the biases are more
symmetrical.

Finished Brothers in Arms, with...resonances to my own life. If only not
being believed were always so easily resolved.

At work I finished a pile of tests and committed them to the repository.
Deletions were a doozy but I figured it out.

Home, dinner, crossword, Flash. P finished building the chair and built the
new coffee table, which fits much better in the space.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I did another fitting on P’s pants, and made some of the flannel
scraps into menstrual pads.

Brothers in Arms has three whole female characters but so far they’ve never
been in the same room. Otherwise compelling though; excellent karma twist.

I made another batch of puffed grain snacks, this time with a touch of
almond butter in the hopes of larger clusters. And cinnamon, and hazelnuts.
It’s good, although the nuts are not particularly crisp.

At work I had lunch with C, who is decompressing from open house but
otherwise well. I tracked and fixed a pernicious bug in the find-by-value
code.

Home, and the replacement chair arm had arrived... the wrong one, but P was
able to grab the actual parts we needed out of it, and installed them in
the original arm that was missing them. We did most of the frame assembly
before dinner, and the rest will wait for later. P started clearing out the
old side tables in prep for switching to new matching ones. We have a lot
of defunct IT equipment.

Dinner, crossword, Flash. Noticing how much damage the Wells character is
doing to perceptions of the disabled. When your only wheelchair-using
character is 1) snxvat, and 2) punbgvp rivy, that’s...not great.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I sewed the French seam on the other side of the pj pants, and
hand-felled the raw edges on the pocket openings. They’re now ready for
waistband and hem. Vor Game is in intrigue land, which I like better.

At work I successfully separated some of the hard-coded ties I identified
on Thursday, learned about proxy models in Django, and made Reference
dereferencing work. I went to therapy and had a short session since
everything is going pretty well. We did remark on how different my hobbies
are from my day job even though I live both. I hypothesized that this
contributes to my continued grad school allergy. I resist the passionate
pursuit of a single topic.

P is stressed and hackly about Problematic Student, but we were able to
recontextualize some of it through talking about it. They’re struggling
with everything, not just his class; it isn’t personal.

The last seed order arrived, and some additional swatches from Nick of Time
arrived (late, but they’re uninteresting so that’s fine). Some replacement
parts for the chair arrived too but they’re the wrong ones. I quickly went
through all the seeds and I somehow ended up with large packets of peas and
beans but only a small packet of elka poppies, instead of the other way
around. It matches the packing list, so I’ll have to check the order email
and maybe re-order the poppies.

Dinner, crossword, Heart.

Dreamt a fascinating black woman had designed my grandparents’ house.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I added a pocket to the pale flannel pj pants and cut out another
pair in the dark flannel. I finished Barrayar, which continued excellent
although I am a bit bored by children in jeopardy and love interests being
the only options for driving the women’s stories vs the more complex worlds
of the men. The culture may be restrictive, but that doesn’t mean the
characters have to be.

We took a small adventure in sqhill to fetch coffee and rooibos and
groceries, though the tea place was shut. I forgot it doesn’t open until
noon. I did find a new bar across from cafe 33 that serves Caribbean food
though, so, plus.

The final chair for the living room is missing some critical hardware, so I
sent in a replacement request and dickered with the service agent a bit.
It’s a threaded receptacle that should have been installed in the chair arm
at the factory, not one that’s listed in the assembly instructions with a
part number, so they might have to send us a whole new chair arm. Boo.

I submitted an amazon order for the few non-mint toothpaste and floss
options I was able to find, and threw in some puffed grains for granola.

After lunch we did the big crossword, and then I made sesame candy. The
black sesame seeds have a slightly swampy aroma so we’ll see if it bugs me.

It was gloriously windy. Some friends lost power, and while our
neighborhood lost an insulator it didn’t interrupt service.

Dinner, Monday’s crossword, Heart, sleep. I’ve been a bit fragile after
dinner lately in spite of cutting back on quantity there. Dunno what’s up.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I finished the waistband and hemmed the pj pants and they are
soooo comfortable I can hardly wait to wear them. Gotta wash the chalk and
oil off them first though. Got most of the new glassware into the
dishwasher. Plastic Magician is darling.

At work I submitted a question about Django test databases to a tutorials
forum and started a slide deck for Monday’s talk.

I went to therapy and unloaded all the stress about cleaning and gross
things and winter and food being difficult but not insurmountable. We also
talked about how bizarre depression is, that it feels simultaneously bad
and normal, nothing anomalous about it from the inside. Sneaky bastard.

Home, cooked a batch of red rice, sat with P for dinner before he left for
class. Sorted all the old glassware into a box, and got all the new stuff
out of the dishwasher to dry properly. Dinner for me was difficult and I
spent the rest of the evening in bed feeling precarious. Heart. Crossword
with P when he got home. Sleep.
infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)
Yesterday I worked on the waistband, got a nice chunk of the LIA testcases
to run, and signed up to run next week’s lab meeting to get some feedback
on the dialogue-disambiguation-as-parsing concept I’ve been developing. The
chairs and remaining glassware arrived. P did a bunch of the living room
laundry, and had class. I finished Master Magician and started Plastic
Magician, which has a different reader and cast. Heart before bed.
