Yesterday I cooked a batch of red rice, went to the dentist for a cleaning
(new folks for me; my previous crew are no longer working at this office),
and scheduled a filling for mid-February. The new hygienist is slower but
less stabby and makes better use of the water and suction tools, so I’ll
absolutely take it. New dentist was mortified by a high filling that’s been
bugging me for six months (I’d already had it fixed once and figured that
was as good as it was gonna get) and will fix that along with the new one
in Feb.

At work I found a dead end to the tack I was exploring with SJ, then
discovered a different route that worked for me... but not on her machine.
We narrowed it down to an issue with how macosx handles remote X sessions,
alas, so she’s going to pursue a different visualization library entirely.
Spent the rest of the afternoon finishing up the parser derivations and
writing a two-week update for T.

It was P’s first day teaching for the new semester, with lecture being
predictably stressful and lab predictably fun. He’s settled in to the first
couple of weeks being a mess before the “oh yeah, I actually know what I’m
doing” kicks in.

I spent the evening knitting and watching Lucifer.

Yesterday I figured out how to deploy a debug version of the android app to
the new phones, and it works! Monday I’ll upgrade the production server and
then we’ll be on our way. After work I did a turn through the garden and
picked beans, NZ spinach, a mira pepper, and a tromboncino, tied up the
cassia squash, and trimmed fading leaves from all the squashes until
whatever black and yellow insects nesting in the ground behind bed #2
started bonking me gently. That’s the “you should go now” signal; very
polite.

Ate the spinach with dinner, though I overserved a bit and didn’t clue in
until I started feeling bad. Delicate evening, but it seems to have
resolved overnight.

P went to the English department social and had a good time defending the
Introvert Recovery Area and reconnecting with past students back for their
final semester after their summer internships.

Yesterday I baked the oat bars again, and they turned out great! I brought
them in and everyone loved them. I got a few more things working in the
android app, and we had a really productive group meeting about how to get
more background knowledge into the parser.

After work I was super hungry so we did early dinner, then after crossword
P talked through some issues he’s been having with python asyncio and I did
enough reading of the documentation to sorta point him in the right
direction. I have some expert blindness issues there but hopefully spiral
learning will help.

Yesterday I spun some more of the Seattle blend, carded more Tunis, went to
therapy, finished a big code revision at work and compiled an early update
since I’m off today for errands and P’s birthday. After dinner we did the
crossword and then played scrabble, which in spite of uniformly terrible
tile draws scored ~580. I started listening to the third book in the YA
series “The School for Good and Evil” which (overall) has been an exemplary
illustration of abusive relationships and how they wreck your ability to
distinguish care from possessiveness. The author doesn’t decry abusive
behavior as much as I would prefer, but the the writing is otherwise good,
with plot elements on multiple scales and some nice foreshadowing.

Yesterday I flicked a bunch more Tunis wool, knit a couple more sample
texture stitches in the hat yarn, set the washcloths to soak, and went on a
deep dive into the low-fodmap internet and ordered some Katie-friendly food
bars and protein supplements.

P went to an espalier workshop in the morning, and met a student in the
evening. Their group is falling apart in a particularly mutually vicious
way, which is disappointing, and it’s stressing him out. It’s been a rough
semester for student mental health.

Yesterday I spun a bit, and went through two snacks again at work. I should
probably start tracking symptoms again because the post-prandrial nausea
isn’t letting up.

P had some business on campus about a chronically missing/absent student,
so he drove us home. At this point they have been seen on campus, so we
know it’s not a life-or-death problem, but it’s still pretty stressful.
There’s some other conflict with a different team of students, and he also
got a callback about another job, so his brain is a pretty busy place.
