Yesterday I slept in. P was feeling less than perfectly healthy, so when we went to the farmers market he wore a mask and did other errands in sqhill. I got us nectarines, apples, red peppers, pizzelle, and yellow beans, carrots, potatoes, and a sesame cookie for me. P spent the rest of the day sleeping, which was good, and building a bit of a fever, which was worrisome. I did the laundry and hung it out on the line, finished the eyelets in the scallop sample, and watched The Princess and the Frog. Loved the zydeco and Cajun French, and the contrast of using a (charged, feared) tool to help vs to harm. I finished Surrender None, which was over all at once though it’s clear she tried to stretch it out. A bit deus ex machina. There is no magic in the real world to defeat the fear and hate of prejudice. A library hold came in so I started that: Senlin Ascends, by Josiah Bancroft. It’s a little young? We’ll see how it goes.

I took the laundry in while dinner simmered, then crossword with P the convalescent, Elementary, snack, and sleep.

P is much better this morning, crossing fingers for a temporary bug.

Yesterday I finished ironing the underlining fabric and cut out all the
pattern pieces for it. There is some substantial puckering at seamlines
that I couldn’t get to go away by changing the stitch length or the
tension, so I’ll have to live with it. I underlined one of the side back
pieces first, with some difficulty— note to self, press after every seam.
The result is gorgeous though so I’m glad I decided to do it.

After lunch I deep-cleaned the third floor bathroom, down to scrubbing the
dye stains off the floor and the fingerprints off the light switch. Feels
good.

P deep-cleaned the stove, including running the burner grates through the
dishwasher.

Dinner, crossword, and then I watched a Studio Ponoc movie (that’s the
Studio Ghibli guy’s new thing) called Mary and the Witch’s Flower. It was
lovely; I recommend it.

Yesterday was packed! My sister found an unpleasant crawly surprise while
my folks were away, and needed reassurance so as not to burn the house
down. Dad’s in trouble when he gets home.

I packed cold lunch and went to therapy, which was much needed; everything
is hard and I’m handling it but it’s just a lot.

I had just enough time to nuke lunch before a teleconference with R to kick
off a types-but-also-formal-methods course that I think will help a lot.

I had an hour between meetings, and managed to locate an appropriate
example of verb+infinitive in the simplenlg test cases, implement that in
our code, and commit a checkpoint. It still refers to objects by number, so
I can’t run the full set of unit tests yet, but at least my spot checks
don’t crash.

Then I met with S to see if we could get the phones working, but alas, we
could not. We managed to get her system failing the same way mine does, but
the fix that worked for her did not work for me. One more instance where
Android error messages are insufficiently specific.

P had the car on campus, so we drove home. That was nice. There was a
tornado warning and some impressive thunder but we managed to evade the
worst of it.

Dinner, crossword, and then I watched Enchanted because of that one tweet
about “How does she know that you love her” being better than therapy. Fun
movie, mildly infuriating, but whiffs pleasantly of the School of Good and
Evil books I read earlier this year.
