Yesterday I finished cutting the hole for the speed controller knob, used a file to round it out, and put the two bends in the plate. A dry fit... mostly works? There is some slippage depending on how you hold it, which is very bad, but I’m hoping when everything is bolted together properly that will go away. Tolerances are difficult. Stabbed my thumb a touch with the point of the file. Small adventures.

Received a package from auntie S containing some items from grandma’s apartment and a lovely letter explaining some of the discussions they had about what she wanted done with her things. Got a little weepy, which is probably healthy at this point.

Crossword after lunch, scrabble after dinner. Late game was a struggle for vowels but we did manage to put QUIZ on a triple, which is always fun. SG-1, snack, sleep. Dreamt of helping someone capture their small excitable dog, same with a miniature parrot, rode a paternoster, had a piano lesson, sang along with a small orchestral rehearsal of a medley of Ode to Joy and Pachelbel’s Cannon.

Finished Shield of Dragons, which may have the most abrupt ending yet. Switching to podcasts for a bit.

Yesterday mom called to deliver the final news on grandma. There will be not a funeral, a service, or a memorial, but a party at the end of next summer.

With the rest of the day, I submitted orders for soap, luffa sponges, and oatmeal and polenta. I cleaned the upstairs kitchen and did all the dishes. After lunch I put in the laundry, then we did the crossword and I hung the laundry out on the line. Snack, then I opened packages from last week, one from a wicca supply place and one from a tooling supply place.

The first had some ingredients for incense, including makko powder and mugwort. I ground some up with a couple frankincense tears (very sticky; I’ll try freezing it next time), added water, kneaded smooth, then rolled a long thin rope. My ultimate goal is to break it into little bits that burn completely in 1-3 minutes, which is the opposite of everyone asking advice on the internet. Mugwort is new to me, but I like it in its raw dried form. If it burns as beautifully, I should look into growing it.

The tooling package contained new tiny drill bits, this time with a constant-size shank so they’ll be easier to get straight in the chuck. Unfortunately they’re too large for the pin vise I have, and I wasn’t in the mood for the dremel, so I picked the basswood prototype pieces back up and trimmed the last one down to the line with a fresh razor blade. By then it was time for dinner, then P took in the laundry while I did dishes. Laundry fold, finished 1993 Tales of the City (wat), started Crashing but it’s so full of people not talking to each other I probably won’t finish it. Did some mending on Monster, snack, sleep.

Nope

Yesterday, mom called to let me know my grandmother was nearing her last moments, and would I like to say goodbye. I did so. Luckily, I had a therapy appointment scheduled shortly thereafter, so about half of that went into reminiscing and processing. She passed this morning. I still appear to be the kind of person who copes with death best by maintaining routine and structure, so everything else in my life is the same. I went to the all hands meeting; I checked on the JHU fixes and made the call not to push them to production just yet; I had a slew of one-on-one meetings; I helped K get situated with the release tasks for 1.10. We had dinner, did the crossword, I watched 1993 Tales of the City, I had a snack, I went to sleep. Things will steep in the background. I don’t know what the funeral arrangements will be or when they will happen, but I will have plenty of stories.
