Yesterday I attempted to use a screw and nut to secure the sliding carriage on the knee lever assembly, with no luck. Instead I traced out where I needed additional clearance on the brass housing, took everything apart again, made the cuts, reassembled everything, et voilà, the original thumb screw went in perfectly. Next is figuring out the lengths of all the cabling, so I installed the knee lever and the cordomatic in the desk. Everything fits! I may wind up short on cabling though.

I did the laundry, cleaned the third floor bathroom a little, and watched The Good Place. I finished the Conjurer Fellstone Trilogy (meh). I started Ink Witch, an urban fantasy based on Egyptian mythology with tattoos and tarot. Dreamt of an encyclopedia of snacks with an inspiring set of different kinds of bananas, a free-form remedial calculus class, dorm room remodeling, survival camping, petty feuds about who gets to be the wolf.

Yesterday I completed the linkage for the knee lever speed control mechanism for the White. It works, though there’s some racking due to the extra distance between the spur gear and the linkage along the pivot. I might do a v3 to address that, but for now it’s fine.

After lunch I put in a bleach load, then noodled around on the internet. Snack and Wynonna Earp, a supernatural procedural with historical and western elements. There’s some graphic violence but they front so hard it’s sufficiently comical not to raise brain alarms for me.

Dinner solo, more Wynonna, crossword when P got out of class, snack, sleep.

Yesterday I did the laundry and hung it out on the line, washed my hair, scheduled a vaccine appointment for Tuesday morning, had a call with my mentee (who’s doing great and starting to push at questions about initiative vs insubordination and gathering tools for defying the “women don’t ask” trope), and watched more Bridgerton... which had a brilliant denouement but seems to have more episodes after?? What else could possibly in store?! Highly recommend, there is a shitton of people-not-taking-to-each-other but (1) that’s kindof par for Regency and (2) they /do/ eventually tell each other everything, so it depends on your tolerance/patience ratio.

Epic dreams of trying to save Olin from an alien power generation experiment gone horribly wrong, complete with remarks like “we have to run, we don’t know how big the explosion is going to be“ “it’s not gonna be that big, we have time to fix it—“

Yesterday I washed the socks, did some recreational ironing, and got interviewed by a group of high school students working on a machine learning project to try and automatically track occupancy in stores. Dinner together, crossword, then Universe, snack, and sleep. Dreamt of a really terrible herb and book shop, being a private detective, and trying to duplicate the effects of a starkly-lit photograph in a solar photogram.

Yesterday we did the laundry, and I made another batch of roasted fava beans (1/4 t baking soda in the soaking and cooking water, poach for 20 minutes) which seem to have a substantially reduced chance of breaking teeth. The rest of the day I finished up some seams I’d forgotten on the charmeuse shorts, and watched more Universe. Snack, sleep, dreamt of leaving careful instructions for a nervous sitter.

Yesterday I went to the meeting with our claims provider, though I was not terribly attentive. I was looking at a problem identified by one of our high school volunteers, which appeared at first to have a simple cause but then got more complicated the more I poked at it. I reviewed some text for the correlations page, made some nominal progress on the BIGINT retrospective, started some notes for a senior database engineer job description, held the Engineering meeting, met with the high school robotics girls, and got stuck on investigating a weird spike in Rhode Island cases. It was a rough day for attention and anxiety.

Dinner together, trash, crossword, finished Atlantis, then snack and sleep. Dreamt of something but it’s already faded.

Yesterday I made crispy roasted fava beans. They’re extremely good, though occasionally you get one that’s more hard than crispy. I plan to repeat the experiment but fuss with the cooking time (this time: 12 hour soak, 7 minute boil, 45 minute bake).

We did the laundry, and hung it out on the line for the first time this year. Gorgeous weather. I did a turn around the garden and watered the peas, which seem to have weathered the frost just fine but are less far along than I’d like. We did a Zoom call with P’s folks; they’re all doing well, although it seems Simon the pomsky turns out to have a slightly underdeveloped brain for being 2 years old. Poor pup.

Afternoon crossword, Atlantis after dinner, then snack and sleep. Dreamt of some kind of socially distanced math puzzle hunt held in a weird conference space inside a Costco, a trip through a Sears/IKEA hybrid looking for decor ideas, grandma giving a seminar on grow lights and baseboard heating, and running into mom while shopping. Yes, subconscious, I miss my family, I miss visiting shops, I miss working in groups in person. It’ll come back, we just need to wait.

I finished The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, very tidy, some good foreshadowing without giving away the ending. I bought the next one, hopefully this keeps up.

Yesterday we did the laundry, and I finished Night Raven (rather abruptly, and while cursing at the protagonist). I started reading Spirelli Paranormal Investigations by Kate Baray, which so far has an unlikeably picky main character but excellent supporting cast, so we’ll see if it sticks. Some mending and Atlantis, 644 Scrabble score despite a long slog and missing three of the triples.

Yesterday we did the laundry, way more than usual, like five loads of laundry. I made a batch of lentils and rice with pepper paste, then after lunch I went out to the garden and planted snow and snap peas. The rhubarb is starting to wake up! I also cleared a bunch of the dead material out of the herb garden, and it looks like it’s going to be a good year for sage and wormwood. The weather was gorgeous, 65 and sunny. Back inside I watched some Atlantis, had a call with my mentee, and then did dinner, crossword, more Atlantis, snack, and sleep. Long involved dreams about intrigue and monarchy succession and oppressive campus construction and mutual aid for large HVAC systems.

Yesterday I washed my hair, did the laundry, and rebuilt Monster (it was time). He’s now shod in blue flannel, and has had his stuffing fluffed and re-stuffed. I minced and browned last week’s mushrooms over dinner. Crossword after lunch, Atlantis after dinner, then direct to sleep to help adjust to the time change. It seems to have worked. Dreamt of the teary retirement of a private CMU shuttle, an outdoor flea market with really excellent handmade boxes and containers in various materials, and a long caravan of trailers including C & family, loaded up with produce for a big trip. Also archers on horseback for some reason.

I finished The Return of Absent Souls, which wrapped up nicely in spite of it all. Not sure what to read next so clearing my podcast queue in the meantime.

Yesterday I tried again to generate repair data for the surveys indicator, this time with the addition of code from N to reduce the memory requirements. It cut running times in half, so I expect it to have finished successfully this time. I met with the claims folks, Engineering, and the high school robotics girls. I had a dentist appointment for a cleaning, which went well. Then I met with R to discuss chronic illness and life after the fellowship, which I had been angsting about, but shouldn’t have — he’s very much in favor of everyone taking excellent care of their health, and I had to talk him down from making me take time off this month instead of waiting for April. So that’s a load off. Didn’t prevent me from having anxiety attacks about it in the evening overthinking everything I’d said, but still a net load off.

Dinner together, trash, crossword, then I watched the final episode of SG-1. I had some nausea issues afterwards that turned into a couple of panic attacks, but they faded with some time playing an appropriately mechanical geometry puzzle game. I dreamt of helping L plan and run a themed party, and something about a fancy restaurant whose koi escaped to puddles in the street during some extreme rainfall.

I finished Whisper and started The Temple of Forgotten Secrets. Another CN for sexual assault; it would be nice if this author could think of literally any other way to constrain the actions of the female characters.

Too short

Yesterday I washed my hair, started the laundry, helped J with her science fair paper, and had a call with my mentee. We did the crossword after lunch and scrabble after dinner (659), then I helped J edit until bedtime. Dreamt of a wacky interactive kinetic sculpture involving brine shrimp, a yarn swift, and a folding screen made of mirrors.

Yesterday I helped J with her science fair project, washed a bleach load with the shower curtain, and otherwise continued to take it easy with SG-1. We did the crossword after lunch, and scrabble after dinner (578). Dreamt of a college/high school teacher and his pediatrician husband, weather magic, flying, people trespassing to have picnics out of quarantine, a puzzle we couldn’t quite solve.

Yesterday I washed my hair, did the laundry, made another batch of lentils and wild rice, met with J about her excellent experiment results, flipped the bedding, rotated the mattress, and watched SG-1. One of the downspouts filled up with ice and fell off the house, which sucks a bit. One of the caps on my ear buds has started coming unglued, which also sucks. All in all though, pretty reasonable day.

Yesterday P slipped on the icy steps. He’s fine, just bruised; he still has good falling reflexes from martial arts. I washed my hair, did a load and a half of laundry, and P finished them up. We did the crossword after lunch, I ordered more laundry detergent, then spent the rest of the afternoon watching SG-1 with popcorn. I had a call with my mentee, who is doing much better with her new job and figuring out how to be glue without losing the appearance of technical competence. Dinner, then I had a call with mom and dad, then more SG-1 and sleep. Dreamt of carpooling to a weird New England version of the strip district, a really amazing steamed rice bun/dumpling, a street fair, making clandestine hard cider, spindling, a year’s worth of super-low tides.

I finished Where Late and started reading Hell’s Rejects by MR Forbes, a space military heist.

Yesterday I washed my hair, helped with the laundry, let the forecasting team know there’s no way we’ll have the database back up by this afternoon, organized the missing issues I generated on Saturday and dropped them on the server, then ran out of juice and watched SG-1 the rest of the day. I did ten minutes on the rowing machine while dinner cooked, and we did the crossword after lunch. I finished Deerskin, but I may go back and reread the end, since it accelerated to a stop pretty hard. Dreamt of hotels and bus systems, a complicated elevator, complicated room numbering systems that made it easy to get lost and even the computer couldn’t give us a straight answer on what our room number was and how to get there. Ugh.

Yesterday I did the laundry, washed my hair, and made another batch of lentils and wild rice. P and I did the crossword after lunch, then snuggled while I played some Monster’s Expedition, a cute puzzle game C recommended. I met with J for an hour about her science fair project, and wrote a thing to generate data files for her so she can stop spending all her time manually dragging things around in spreadsheets. Dinner, SG-1, then I tried a new snack, a puffed legume concoction. The churro flavor tastes too much like cake frosting for my liking, but I got two savory flavors too so we’ll see. Sleep, dreamt of science labs and serfs and EPA subcontractors and secret fae betrothals.

Yesterday I did the laundry, drafted patterns for gusseted pockets to hold the two screw thread gauges, and added another pocket for the center punch. We did the crossword after lunch, then I printed proofs of the zine, which were much too small. I re-set the whole thing in Pages, printed again, satisfactory. Today will be illustrations and collating for booklet printing. Snack, then shower, dinner, scrabble, SG-1, snack, sleep. Dreamt of bad landlords, busy single mom meal planning, dye chemistry, and sewing skirts out of eyelet fabric for a school pageant.

Bright and Breaking Sea continues well, with particularly good prose.

Yesterday we learned that the improvements we pushed to metadata resulted in a 75% reduction in running time, which is amazing news. We now have enough runway to make all the improvements we want to how the covidcast data is stored. The rest of the day was meetings, notably including a quick orientation for C on what lab manager duties might be like in future. I also worked with A and B to do a database migration for the new version of the hhs hosp data schema.

In theory I could have gone to dinner at 6:15, but instead brain decided to clear up some work details that really could have waited until morning, and I didn’t actually quit until quarter to seven. Dinner, trash, crossword, snuck in an SG-1 episode under the wire, direct to sleep.

Dreamt of guitars, tattered fiber processing equipment (thanks subconscious, I’m aware), messy rooms, running workshops, turning stitch markers into earrings.

Ambassador 1 continues; the author is a much better linguist than biologist.

Incitement

Yesterday was surprisingly normal, considering the fucked up business at the Capitol. Met with the claims folks in the morning, apparently they got acquired by/are merging with the other big claims processor, so our urgent request to resolve some weird discrepancies in the counts is now competing with that chaos. Went to the frontend design review meeting, the Engineering meeting, met with R to clarify what an API endpoint is supposed to mean, and in the cracks between things did all the grading and planning for December goals and January/Q1 goals.

Dinner, trash, crossword, SG-1, snack, sleep. Dreamt of slow multi-hop air travel that takes a day to rest between flights, and I approve.

I started reading Making Money by Terry Pratchett. It is lovely to read these with a greater sense of story mechanics than I had in college.
