Yesterday I monitored the hackathon, but mostly did weekend things. I went out to the garden and realized the squashes, weeded a bunch, and fixed the hose from the water barrels so it siphons properly. Rinse off, lunch, then spent the afternoon on the White. I installed the new bobbin winder friction pulley (/tire) and motor drive friction pulley. I looked up what grease people are using nowadays in the grease cups and it turns out petroleum jelly melts at the right temperature (though people get Very Intense about whether that’s sufficient selection criteria). I put some in a wee tin along with the wicks, melted everything with a heat gun so the wicks could more easily saturate, and installed them in the cups. I was worried the springs I bought would be too strong but they’re just right. I turned my attention to the knobs, whose set screws are marking up the flatted shafts. I tried putting a wooden shim in there, but it’s not as effective as I would’ve hoped. I did some research on spring steel and the most economical way of getting some at the width I need might be to murder an old mainspring out of a pocket watch. I also marked out where the numbers will need to go on the dials, and made a template.

Dinner, crossword, DS9, snack, sleep. Dreamt of transformation scarves, theme parks, poorly thought-out rigid procedures for a high school chemistry class, warring food courts, overzealous cleaning staff.
