infryqFriday we took delivery of 5 yards of compost from AgRecycle onto a tarp in the driveway. Over the weekend P and I managed to fill three raised beds and mulched the paths. I kept hoping it would rain to settle the dirt down so I could top everything up, but no luck. Yesterday I hacked all the weeds out of the folly (that's the junk spot in the yard where previous occupants had a swing set, so it's fairly level), dug the raspberries out that had migrated there, then covered it with cardboard, a big bag of wool discards, and mulch. We need 4 more stakes and then the 4th raised bed can be installed there, which is where the flax is going to go (two months late but flax only needs 3 months to harvest so it should be okay).
Saturday we went to the Strip and got olive oil, vinegar, and cinnamon... I also stopped at WFH for battle carrots and the kiwis were gorgeous so I got a few of them too. I used the kiwis to break in our new dehydrator and it works great! I don't know why anyone puts food coloring in dried kiwi, it looks fine as is and tastes delicious. I plan to dry all sorts of fruits as they come into season this summer. Bulk dried fruit from Amazon has been disappointingly hit and miss.
Sunday we went to the Sqhill farmer's market and got lettuce, chard, cucumber, rhubarb and summer squash. In the afternoon I did up the rhubarb into sauce, and made vinegar pickles out of the cucumber and a big bag of asparagus I'd bought Wednesday at the Phipps market. Excited for salads with asparagus pickles!
I've fallen into a good rhythm of wake, breakfast, gardening, shower, lunch, misc, dinner, nails, bed. P and I have been doing the crossword when the app refreshes at 10, which is a little late for me yet, but should get a little better after the solstice.
