Over the weekend I finished all the raw edges of the skirt with a new-to-me
technique, Hong Kong finish. It’s a bit like using bias tape, but since
bias doesn’t fray you can leave one of the edges unfolded for less bulk. I
put on inseam pockets and sewed the side seams, being clever about the left
side as it’s a side-zip dress. I sewed the bodice and skirt together, and
installed an invisible zipper, including a tricky bit where the zipper
crosses the pocket. I only had to unpick and redo one side of the zipper
once and a little repair at the bottom end where I sewed too close to the
teeth, so that’s not too bad. I used my new invisible zipper foot, which
does make things easier though I think next time I’ll press the zipper a
little less aggressively. Then I sewed the bodice lining in at the armholes
and neck, and used a method from Sew Over It to attach the shoulder seams.
It does leave a bit of a jog behind even after trimming, but it was way
easier than trying to turn the thing through the shoulder strap would have
been, and more secure than I can currently get with hand-stitching, so I’ll
take it.

I worked on the broccoli embroidery some more but it’s just more flowers so
hard to tell.

My birthday was lovely; I didn’t take the bath I had planned but I did have
a pretty good pumpkin cookie, lots of calls and txts from family, new socks
and an annotated facsimile book of period recipes from the 17th century.
