Yesterday I cut another pair of underwear and stabilized some more fabric.
I was super confused for a moment because I couldn't find the selvedges,
until it occurred to me that perhaps it had been tube knit and then cut to
make a flat piece. I kinda wish they'd just sent it to me as a tube, so I
could be as fussy as I pleased about cutting it on grain, but alas.
I busted out my other machine to refamiliarize myself with what is broken
about it -- looks like I lost a nut into the bowels of the case that would
attach the bumper/brake for the bobbin winder. So that's in a baggie now. I
called the place in the south hills but it went straight to suspiciously
anonymous voicemail and no one's called me back. I'll double check the
number today, and if I had it right I'll move on to the place by ross park
mall.
The new strap for my day bag came! It is leather. I prototyped a couple of
methods of awl-punching and sewing on some scraps, and I think I'll need to
use a hammer and a block of wood to do the real ones. My hands were okay
for the scraps but they wouldn't put up with more than that. Polyester
thread held 4x and stiffened with beeswax, ironed, then waxed a second
time. Backstitch, half a stitch at a time. Instead of trying to root around
to find the next hole from the fabric side, stab through from the leather
side first then follow the resulting hole in the fabric. I was thinking of
just stitching through the lining as well, but now I'm thinking it might be
worth it to see if I can slit a lining seam somewhere so I can just do the
outer canvas. Anyway it has to wait for a weekend because it'll put my bag
out of commission for a couple of days.
