Yesterday I made another batch of nut and seed bars, though the nuts were a touch old so I might not keep them. I hemmed P’s pj pants, and they fit him and are a good length, so, complete. At work I slogged through a pile of issues with database truncation and Django fixtures and python multiple inheritance but was ultimately victorious, and now my test rig runs as designed. Back to actually fixing bugs!

Home, sat with P and picked out a rolling stool for him to replace the kneeling chair that’s starting to aggravate his knee issues. Dinner, crossword, then I started watching Next In Fashion, a new Netflix reality competition show a la GBBO. It’s hosted by Tan France, which is lovely, and the designers are both already professionals and paired up in teams. It’s a neat take that reduces some of the anxiety of amateurs looking for their big break, and seems to keep the focus on cooperation.

Snack, sleep. Dreamt of bunny selfies, disused roundabouts, stationery shops, and tower defense.

Yesterday we went on an adventure in Ross township. First I dropped off my sewing machine at Thorntons, while P took a brief walk down to the thrift shop near there. Then P dropped me at the mall and went to Buddha Coffee to work. It is reportedly a great little place! At the mall I went looking for any handbags to beat the one I found on Etsy, a tunic-length cardigan vest with pockets, and flat or flat-ish boots. Nothing all around. Everything is made of plastic. All the knits this season are bulky openwork. All the handbags are plastered with logos. I picked up a thermal henley from ll bean on sale, and that’s it.

Home by way of pigeon (for a bagel for P) and the art store (where I found a fox tote so I can stop stealing the canvas shoppers from the car). Late lunch, crossword, and then I went ahead and bought the bag of Etsy. With the rest of the afternoon I finished felling the other inseam in P’s pj pants, and sewed and trimmed the crotch seam. I started reading Rise of the Dragons by Morgan Rice, which is alright so far if a little heavy on the “not like other girls” internalized misogyny. Dinner, Voyager, snack, sleep. Dreamt of zen packing, the kind where you end up throwing out a ton of stuff. Prescient for my office move this upcoming week.

Yesterday I finished felling the left seam on P’s pj pants. At work I tracked down some details of an old software system that let our research group send masses of search queries through Google, and sent them off with caveats for bit rot to a faculty member from our sister research group in Brazil. I spent the rest of the afternoon battling pyparsing, which seems to have a bug in its resultsName implementation. I think I’ve fixed it (or at least fixed our use of it), but I still want to finish putting every possible combination of input types in a unit test just in case.

P had the car on campus and drove us home, after which I spent another hour looking at bags on the internet. I may have found one, in the form of a cork bag. Cork hit the sewing world a couple of years ago as a new leather alternative, flexible, durable, sustainable, and water resistant. The top is still narrower than I’d prefer so I’m holding off to see if I find anything on today’s Ross Park mall expedition.

Dinner, crossword, Voyager, snack, sleep. Intense dreams, some wretched.

Yesterday I sewed the inseams on P’s pj pants, and started felling the seam allowances down. I finished Behave Badly; I love Ruth Goodman but I’m ready to return to fiction. At work I finished the CUDA upgrade and let student know. I finished the knowledge graph visualizer and committed to my local repo. I returned to unit tests, passed the remaining infrastructure ones and moved on to the use case tests. Home, spent an hour looking at shoulder bags online with limited luck, dinner, trash, crossword, Voyager, no snack, sleep. Dreamt of an extremely weird fraggle-style alternate reality that messed around with time and scale.

Yesterday I overslept, and had to send P off to his late morning class without breakfast 🙁. I finished packing up yarn and fiber for J, and went in to campus on a later shuttle. At work I fixed a password reset for an AWS student, and made some progress on the CUDA upgrade for one of W’s machines, fixing some issues with the lab status page and old defunct share mounts in the process. I went to therapy, talked about intrusive thoughts and progress setting boundaries and sleep lethargy and general mood buoyancy in spite of it all. On the way back I went to the Indian grocery and got red lentils and ground cumin. Back at work we had a lab meeting to brainstorm about the upcoming collaboration with B’s research group. Less technical than I expected but ultimately more useful I think, since we got a lot of use case ideas out of it.

Home on the late shuttle, made dinner, which was done just in time for P to get home and heat up some soup. Dinner, crossword, Voyager, snack, sleep. Dreamt, but they’ve already vanished.

Yesterday I did something unmemorable with my morning. We did the crossword then I think? After lunch we went to geagle and got carrots, red peppers, sweet potato, almond butter, soup, Cheerios, sanding sugar, baking powder, ap flour, frozen green beans, eggs, half and half, and mozzarella. I put a load and a half of laundry through the machines, then started tidying the sewing room. I packed up the final pattern for the couch cushions, moved the jumble of stuff that tends to accumulate on the cutting table to the tray of the sewing box I got a couple years ago, then got possessed by a cleaning spirit that ended with moving furniture and vacuuming the sewing room and the bedroom and second floor landing. In the process I finished To Say Nothing Of The Dog, which wrapped up nicely. It’s not clear the author agrees with my headcanon, but that’s fine.

Dinner, Voyager, snack, sleep. Dreamt of a vastly different CMU campus, where an ML group had built an enormous robotic pig. I discovered a gymnasium and engaged a couple of random coworkers in a weird game of catch with props. A sketch journal about my efforts to re-learn handstands. Accidentally stole handwritten notes from a colleague. A topographic art installation. Being late for something in the woods.

Yesterday I slept in. After lunch we went to Sqhill for mild adventures, but 10kV was shut; I did some window shopping at Little’s but nothing jumped out at me; I looked through Avalon for boots and handbags but they didn’t have anything that suited; by then P had come up empty for seating at the coffee shop so we failed out to the grocery store for taco supplies and went home. Crossword at some point. I did the laundry and watched Voyager while P made beef filling, then I took over the kitchen for roasted sweet potato, parsnip, yellow rice, sautéed mushrooms zucchini and bell pepper, and refried beans. Cleaned the tava of all its dook from Thanksgiving and made masa. P squished the tortillas and I cooked them; there was some learning curve to stopping them from sticking and getting them to puff but we got there eventually. The beans smelled weird so we didn’t eat them but everything else was delicious. P went back to course prep and I watched Voyager, then no snack since we ate so late, and sleep. Dreamt, but they’ve already vanished.

Yesterday I banged pretty hard on a behavior-tree AI authoring tool developed by C’s lab. I wish I could have spent more time on the higher-level capabilities of the system, but an IDE without copy, paste, or comment syntax turns out to be excessively hard to use.

After lunch we went to Target for CO2 and vegan butter and came up empty on both, though we did get a pile of snacks and seltzer for me, and a set of wire shelving to start organizing the third floor closet. We hit geagle for the butter-like substance, did not find any maseca but did find an interesting aged Mexican cheese, and clementines. BB&B had the CO2, then home. I spent the afternoon finishing the long piped seam in the first couch seat.

I finished Gideon the Ninth. It gets pretty gory by the end but the characters treat it as sufficiently normal/instrumental that it’s possible to stay above it. A+++, would read again, would read more by this author.

Dinner, crossword, Voyager, snack, sleep. Dreamt of helping M with a tricky emulsified marinade, sleeping in a cozy loft, pine martens, my brother as a teenager, and putting away laundry between houses.

Yesterday the taxi picked us up at 8:30. I took my meds, we had an uneventful two flights. I read some of Gideon the Ninth and made a bit of progress on the final handkerchief but mostly napped. I troubleshooted a bit with F some problems she’s having with the user study environment, but it’s not fixed yet so there’s more to do. We got home to our correct house with correct silverware and correct pots and stove and oven and correct bed and it is good. I put together a shopping list and we went to geagle. There were many packages waiting for us, as I’d told the post office to hold our mail and deliver it all on the last day. There was a nice card from F&A, along with a fun book on historical playing cards. The calendar from grandma arrived, along with a pile of cotton yarn for dishrags. A shipment of apple chips, which I need to put a stop to until I start eating them again. And.... a mixed case of wine from my folks! I can’t believe it both made it through PA nonsense and that FedEx dropped it off (when? who knows! & nobody stole it!) without the required signature. It’s all CinqCellars stuff, mostly 2015 vintage. Very exciting.

Early dinner, crossword, Voyager, snack, more Voyager, more snack, correct bedtime bathroom routine, sleep, on correct pillows and correct Monster and everything. I love seeing P’s folks but it is so so soothing to be home again.

Yesterday I made another batch of nut and seed bars, with a lower oven temperature and checking on them more obsessively, and they only caught a little at the edges. Acceptable. P and I went to Staples for envelopes and mailing labels, and also picked up a long-arm stapler I’ll be shipping back to Pittsburgh. After lunch I did all the folding and stapling and stuffing and labeling, and they were just a gram or two short of an ounce so I put two stamps on all the domestic ones in case of scale miscalibration (international first class is good up to two ounces). Walked them down to the post office and done. Very pleased. While we were out earlier we’d picked up a nice piece of cod for dinner, some pot pie and quiche for today and the freezer, and ingredients for casserole to split up and freeze. D’s been running ragged for ages and sometimes it’s nice to just dump something into the oven for dinner instead of trying to cook tired. In the afternoon I started hemming another handkerchief. Baked cod, sweet potatoes, and green beans 2 for dinner (green beans 1 were discarded for being slimy, boo), and I made a kindof weird saffron quinoa pin oat raisin porridge for me. After dinner P got the radio working and managed to pick up broadcasts from China and we think Romania. Snack, sleep. Dreamt, but they’ve already faded.

Yesterday I made a bunch of illustrations for the New Years zine, rearranged some stuff, and did up the back cover. Front cover, photocopying, and shipping is left. M and D went to Trader Joe’s to stock up on the soup G likes. After lunch P and I took M to the airport, with many hugs and pats to transmit to A and the dogs. On the way home we stopped at the inferior Whole Foods for nut/seed bar supplies. D made chicken cacciatore for dinner, and I polished off the K-compatible leftovers. In the evening D asked about nutritionists for G, so I talked through the wide variety I’ve seen over the years and encouraged her to ask their PCP the right questions to get a referral to a GI specialist as well. Snack and sleep. Dreamt of a horrid alternate CMU campus, with mangled voicemails from MLD staff, getting interminably lost, and unexpectedly walking into active meeting rooms, lecture halls, SCA court processions, orchestra pits, etc.

Yesterday I took a long walk in the center looking at purses and came up empty. M made carrot ginger soup and reserved some for me without onions, which was lovely. I went to Whole Foods and got some K-compatible snacks for when the holiday cookies for the rest of the house come out. I hemmed another handkerchief for T. Siege Tactics is done, and well-ended thanks to a nice chunky epilogue. There are more, which is good. G had the occupational therapist in, which helped a lot I think. He’s too close to see how much he’s improving over time, so it is good to have someone reviewing goals and abilities and other such metrics on a regular basis. Dinner was green beans almandine with pin oats for me, and eggplant rotini? for the house from a local catering company; basically stuffed shells with fried eggplant in place of the shells. Everything was enjoyed by all. Afterwards P and M played Dark Tower via pass-and-play on the iPad. Bed at the usual time. Dreamt of block days in high school french class, security clearance, an alternate universe where computers were developed early and we had a war followed by a lasting peace treaty with the AIs in 1882, and flying strawberries to a small research station in the far north in a sort of biplane.

Yesterday we walked through the center, and got stuff for Christmas Eve dinner (char, chard, beer, other bits and pieces). G’s home care assistant came around to help with normal things; she was very nice. After lunch I worked on the zine a bit, and discovered I’d left one of the pages at home. Boo. I’ll be piercing together some of it from memory and leaving the rest out. P and I drove to the airport to pick up M. After some chatting we made dinner, ate, did dessert, then I went to bed. G had a rough fatigue day but a good blood pressure day, and was able to be around for most everything with frequent nap breaks.

Yesterday we went to the co-op and got a kefir lime, zucchini, turnip, almond butter, k-compatible cookies, crackers, spelt flour, chocolate gems, half and half, raisins, and ginger. We stopped at five points and P got a wee baguette and a poppyseed danish. Home, lunch, and washed a couple loads of towels and my big coat. I processed another few months into the xmas letter support, and set us up with USPS to hold our mail while we’re in CT. Voyager, dinner, crossword, Voyager, snack, sleep.

Yesterday was our anniversary. We went to the Staghorn for our annual small business Saturday field trip, and I had a pumpkin spice almond milk steamer which was excellent. Met Jordan, Sam, and their two little ones. Found several gifts. Home, lunch, crossword, then I finished cutting out the first couch seat pieces and made more piping. I read a bunch of Harry Potter fanfic, and started listening to The Library of the Unwritten by A. J. Hackwith. Dinner, then we played scrabble (597), I watched an episode of Voyager, then snack and sleep.

Long involved dreams about sharing an office with a grad student who became increasingly hostile and threatening to the point of me planning to quit my job and move to a different city. Woke up, rolled over, made up with them. Turned out to have been a combination of dialect, language barrier, domain, and a bad email address.

Prep day

Yesterday we went to Costco for kleenex and oats, and also got cleaning supplies, nuts, avocado oil, pasta, and madelines. Lunch, then P went to campus for grading, and I watched Voyager and finished the abstract darning embroidery. Dinner, crossword, Outlander, snack, sleep.

I finished reading Hex Files and was pleasantly surprised by the denial of “brooding ex-boyfriend saves the day” in favor of “srznyr sevraqfuvc, zntvpny sheavgher, naq n arj-sbhaq frafr bs pbzcrgrapr haqre cerffher ...save the day, without even a mention of the brooding ex.” If you can stand wading through a few romance novel tropes to get there, I highly recommend it.

The respiratory symptoms linger. Yesterday I stayed home from the market, and P got apples (a shitton, since it’s the last market of the season), carrots, more different carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, a wee butternut squash, scarlet queen turnips, red peppers, Bulgarian pastries, pizzelles, a sesame cookie, mushrooms, pasta, and probably some other stuff I didn’t catch. After lunch we did the crossword, and I baked the nut and seed bars. I finished the diagonal filling on the circle embroidery and started some other circles to make it look less like a sarlacc pit.

[food] I’ve been having trouble regulating my appetite. I get ravenous, overeat, get nauseated, then by the time the nausea fades it’s past time for my next meal and I’m ravenous again. I know what I need to do — slow down the eating part of the cycle and under-serve — but so far I keep missing the mark.

I successfully ordered the socks, and also found a present for P. Watched some Voyager. After dinner watched an episode of Outlander. Wish the writers would find some other signal for “these dudes are bad” than r*pe.

Humors

Yesterday I stayed mostly down recovering. I did finish the chain stitch and start a diagonal laid filling for the rest of the circle sampler. I’ve been reading The Hex Files, a paranormal mystery romance by Gina Lamana. It’s fine, though the narration voice switches back and forth between first and third person in a way that was confusing to interpret in audio form for a good while. I watched more Voyager, and assembled ingredients for another batch of nut and seed bars. Afternoon snack was fraught but dinner was okay. After crossword P and I attempted to order a pile of new wool socks for our anniversary but at the last minute the website balked, so I’ll try again today. Dreamt of decorating the top floor of a house, rain, elevators, classes, a parking garage, a student learning two languages at once.

infryq: Kitchen scene at dawn, post-processed to appear as if painted (Default)

Yesterday I slept way in, past the time the day-light shuts itself off. Not sure why, but P is now down with a feverish cold, so maybe it’s my immune system.

I sewed the long piped seam in one of the couch backs, in the process discovering I hadn’t balanced one side of the front panel. To compensate, I shortened the side panel, twice — once to measure, and again after sewing when it came up a half inch too long again. Ripped back twice in total, since the third time was an absolute charm. Pleased with the results.

I started reading This Is How You Lose The Time War, and can see why people like it. I may have to reread it once I’m through, as it was hard to follow in the early letters.

After a late lunch we went to geagle and got more meds for P, and more snack supplies for me. Early dinner, crossword, Outlander, snack, sleep.

Yesterday we went to the farmers market and got apples, zucchini, carrots, onions, a turnip, garlic, pasta, a sesame cookie, and mushrooms. We went to geagle and got sunflower seeds, pepitas, bread, coconut, and paper plates. I made a rather nice lentil, apple, and turnip soup for lunch. Crossword, then I started laundry and filled the dehydrator with apples. I finished the french knot flowers on the embroidery sampler, tried a square chain, didn’t like it, ripped it out, and replaced with a double chain stitch instead. Dinner, folded the laundry, Elementary, snack, sleep. Hazy dreams of lab work.
