Yesterday I spun some more Gotland, finished the decreases on the slip
stitch hat, swatched with the lining yarn, and picked up the provisional
cast-on to start knitting the lining. It’s going to be So Soft! Very
exciting.
I’m rapidly consuming the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. They’re
lovely, even if they do mix up their allegories from time to time (if your
Evil embodies darkness and can’t bear the light, maybe don’t invoke the
Lucifer mythos, especially in opposition to Prometheus) and deserve
substantial side-eye for thoughtless xenophobia (foreign languages are
impenetrable “even for a wizard”) and asserting the vast history of human
habitation of the americas somehow doesn’t count, while that of Ireland
gives it a rich magical depth. They were written in the 80s, so some of
that is due to the misinformation of the time (there’s also a so-far
stealth gay couple), but it chafes anyway. The Audible reader is excellent,
and the basic story of “people who like reading and doing good stuff
without getting credit for it are saving the world” is evergreen.
