Yesterday was eclipse day! I spent the morning making some larger format
cyanotype papers and a better pinhole screen. This time I glued foil to a
large piece of drawing paper first, then folded and punched it. The paper
provided support so that the foil didn't crimp into itself, and unfolding
was way easier. No tearing! I was also more meticulous about the punch
pattern, and it paid off.
Once occlusion started I had a system: one sheet in the projector, one on
the patio set up for photograms with whatever convenient plants so I could
easily monitor the exposure level and account for clouds. Ten minute
exposure times. Anyone who has done long-exposure star photography will
know that this meant I wound up with streaky prints in my projector. When
the occlusion started getting deep I didn't even get that much, and I
developed two or three sheets of blank paper that way. But! The photograms
all turned out great, and the projector was a great way to view the eclipse
physically. I'll probably put photos and construction details on the other
blog when I get a moment.
