Super-glad I took yesterday off; I felt pretty crappy and was able to kick
around the house and pack over several sessions instead of trying to go to
work and do all my packing in the evening.

A few years ago we took a mid-century sewing machine cabinet off a friend
who was getting rid of a bunch of furniture. Yesterday was the first time I
opened it up to see about getting it working again. It's a White Rotary
model 77. There's a flat spot on the rubber roller linkage-thing between
the motor and the flywheel that needs to be replaced, the electrics should
all be replaced so I didn't plug it in (you can see copper at the plug
joint), and I wasn't able to turn the mechanism by hand so something in
there is seized. I'll need to get it moving again with some sort of
penetrating oil before I can take everything apart for a proper cleaning
and oiling. Yesterday I figured between the electrics and the rubber majig
it would need to be restored by a professional, but today I'm feeling more
competent so maybe I will see about doing it myself. There've got to be
books on this kinda thing.

Bonus: it came with a big bunch of attachments, including four hemmers in
various sizes, a binder for folding applying and top stitching bias tape
all in one go, a five-stitch ruffler, and a large mystery attachment that
may be another more complicated ruffler. Or maybe an early walking foot? I
have to look it up and see.

It doesn't do a zig-zag stitch, but it does backstitch, which covers the
vast majority of my sewing. Plus, the thing is a tank, the speed controller
is knee-activated, and when it's open the amount of space on the table is
truly luxurious.
