Dreamt of surprise beets

Yesterday I did the rest of the pressing on the binding for armhole #2, then decided to hand-fell it in place instead of doing it by machine. Worked great. I picked out buttons and layout and made alignment marks for the buttonholes.

It rained buckets in the morning so we didn’t get to test out the peel-away product for the paint on the front of the house.

I finished Searching For Dragons and started Calling on Dragons. The more I reread these books the more I understand how formative they were for me in walking the line between “mainstream culture is Bad, Actually” and “mainstream culture wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t fight difference so hard”. The former isn’t great and I’m still working on excising it, but the latter has been super helpful in how I approach difference, in myself and in others.

At work I found one of the failing tests was a candidate-ranking issue, which usually means the semantic parser needs to be retrained. I wound up down a rabbit hole of converting the training data to the new theo reference format, new semantic frame serialization format, and a weird bug in serialization I’d missed months ago in the definition of list frames. I need to write a new deserializer, too.

I got my hair cut; she took up the frame around the front to sortof cheekbone-length bangs, and took a bunch of weight out of the back. Looks fantastic.

P picked me up, then home, dinner, crossword (tricky trick!), Legends, snack, sleep.

G update: surgery went great; the internal bleeding that had him in the ER does not seem to have been trouble with sutures but a small ulcer plus the blood thinners he’s on. They took out the stent, and looked for the GI blockage that was there weeks ago, but it’s gone now. They also couldn’t find the mass on his pancreas; the hypothesis is it’s either also gone or in a different layer/behind some other membrane, so they’re going to go back in with an ultrasound next time. Basically he’s in better shape than anyone thought, and if he keeps healing how he’s been healing he’ll be back home in no time. Excellent news. Still want confirmation on the pancreas thing, but that’s the only real open ticket.

Dreamt of fruitless searches for scrap paper

Yesterday I found the artwork I want to show at the memorial reception, and
wrapped it for shipping. I went in early for a meeting with T, who is
pleased with my progress and wants to explore options for making the
semantic parser more robust next. I called the salon to see if I could get
in a haircut before we leave for Seattle, and scored one for end of day. I
did a pile of errands in the UC, sending off the art and also depositing a
check that’s been languishing for a while and also getting lunch at the
build-a-pasta place and a beverage at entropy. I spent the rest of the
afternoon releasing an old NELL dataset to the website, sending an email
blast about impending downtime to wipe and upgrade the cpu servers, and
starting a writeup of the issues I’m having with mod_wsgi in python 3 with
Django 1.11.

I bussed to sqhill, got an excellent haircut and caught up with my stylist
(she’s getting married! happy for them). Walked home, decompressed with P,
then dinner, internet and sleep. The formal academic drama with P’s student
is done for the moment, which is good; now he can focus better on the fun
part seeing his class present their excellent work to the client.
