puzzle games, family health

Yesterday I messed up another attempt at the rolled hem, then gave up and pressed the whole darn thing in a double fold by hand. It worked, mostly. There’s a squirrely bit where the fold caught oddly but it’s on the inside so I’m gonna live with it. Maybe the next one will try a hand-rolled hem.

I finished Lies Sleeping. Not sure how I feel about the ending. The next one chronologically is a novella with a different protagonist, so we’ll see if it settles.

Had lunch with C, and discussed kale, cucumbers, and clay.

At work I finished setting up the server, and set IT to finishing up the infiniband configuration so we can move everything into the Ghc machine room, finally. This ticket has been open since just before winter break, I’m tired and I want it to be over. Spent the rest of the afternoon setting up a slotslot test, bringing the native python implementation back in line, and starting one of the possible approaches to addressing the path/hash collision issue.

P had lunch with M who took the photos for our wedding, at the South Indian place in Carnegie. While in the neighborhood he went to the ceramics supply shop and got some low fire earthenware that might be suitable for oven and stovetop use, some glazes to match, and a knife tool for me. He wound up on campus, and drove us home.

Duolingo Arabic is up! So we both started that. Dinner, crossword, P called his mom, then we finished The Room. There was a moment in the endgame where we feared for some serious misogyny, but they turned it around and now I’m excited to see what they do next with a rogue gifted Victorian woman in the mix. Snack, sleep.

G update: the dietician was in to see him, and they figured out thick liquids are easier for him just now than thin ones, so he had actual dinner for the first time in ages! It went well! Thickened apple juice and coffee-flavored beverage. Hospital food is wild.

Yesterday my grandfather passed away. My brain is a little weird right
now; we haven’t been close in twenty years but he played a big part in my
childhood. I’m looking into possibilities for flying back for the funeral
and to help out family. In the meantime, routine has been a comfort.

I finished felling the inseam of P’s pajama pants and started the
waistband. Civil is somewhat vindicated both by Ekaterin showing
appropriate fury and Cordelia directing Miles’s attention away from winning
and toward just being a decent fucking human being. At work I tried a bunch
of ways to get my shoddy backup of the ldap server reinstated, but
eventually had to fall back on just restoring the configuration, and
figuring out how to put the user data back later. P had lunch with K at
Google to gather some ground truth on what working there might be like.
That put him and the car on campus, which was good for a hug, and for
hitting the store again on the way home for blueberries, half and half, and
smiley tots because those are the only kind that aren’t seasoned with onion
powder. Jerks. Home, dinner (P put some of his pad grapow on a pizza shell
with tomato sauce and it was apparently a hit), crossword, Flash.

Yesterday I fixed the cb seams of the hem bands, and started preparing to
sew the mauve sideof the hem band to the skirt. Soooooo close. I started
reading Minimum Wage Magic, which is a little uneven but includes a
surprisingly charming light dusting of unreliable narrator. Occasional
body-horror moments but they’re mostly signaled ahead of time and skippable.

P met up with A to catch up, delivered a tin of the salve I made, and
received a mystery strainer and nonmystery sugar scrub gift.

I missed the shuttle, caught the bus, and had lunch with C and new-to-cmu
person Ch, who needed to vent. Nobody who fails to understand that a good
admin can make or break a project has any business in a management role. I
wish her luck in eventually breaking through that BS.

I spent most of the afternoon laying out draft implementation plans for the
new KB system, and then started reading a seminal paper on deductive
parsing. Had a brief fight with the printer but it was probably Firefox’s
fault.

Dinner, trash, crossword, Lucifer.
